It's a compromise, people seem to still want to use these doors. As far as I'm aware plenty of of places that use emergency exits do use silent alarms, so that false alarms can be weeded out before raising the alarm throughout the building. If you instead use the system to have a staff member insure the door is closed after it has been opened, then you minimise the chance of someone getting back in through the door unnoticed.
If use of the emergency door is so ingrained that people would continue to use it even if it's alarmed, then you don't want it going off all the time because the door being opened has lost it's meaning, it doesn't automatically mean that a shooter is about to run back in or that the building is on fire.
Here in the UK I've never seen anyone use the emergency exits to leave the cinema.
How exactly can you tell that?

I'm amazed that people are saying they work in theaters where the exit doors are locked from the outside. Do your insurance companies know about that? That's a huge negligence lawsuit waiting to happen when people die because they're trapped in your theater.

people are trying to come up with all these ideas about how to make it up to the families, but really you can't do anything to make it up to them except provide them with a sense of justice

I get the impression he is/will feel remorse and question himself. From all accounts, he was pretty normal and likeable to those that interacted with him. He had no 'cause' or motive, no one to be angry at. How does someone with such a bright future all of a sudden begin to dedicate himself to massacring innocent people?

I guess everyone just needs something to talk about, but why is everyone here still sitting around picking apart every little detail of his expressions, mugshots, personality, demeanor in the courtroom, etc? All of that shit is totally meaningless. None of us know anything. He's looking and actingthe way he is because that's the way he's looking and acting. There's nothing to be had from reading into it. Time to change the channel, stop hitting F5 on cnn.com, and move on to something else. We'll hear about it if there's any new developments.
