Shin Megami Tensei IV (3DS) - Trailer up! - TBA 2013 (New: Website update)

I don't see why anyone would bother with a Vita a this point. I'm not a fanboy of any system, but it's pretty clear to me that the 3ds is where the games are going to be.

Buy both, best of both worlds :)

I have Vita now, will get 3DS when this hits and then buy a backlog of games to play (hopefully) @ cheaper prices.

Excellent news. I do hope there is a first person option.

Hopefully with the release of this trailer (and Soul Hackers), Atlus will start revealing more info about this game.

They look one way in SMT2, another in 3. Gabriel's male in 2, female in 3.

If by that you mean "they're in 2D in SMT2 and 3D in SMT3" then yes. Otherwise, Uriel, Michael and Raphael all look exactly the same in both games, to the point that they even use the same poses. Gabriel in SMT3 uses the design from if... and like the other three is in the exact same pose.

I meant from 1 to 2, I think.

This is just the right amount of teasing to get me hyped! I'm looking forward to seeing more of the art direction and a little battle footage. The soundtrack should be pretty fantastic too.

I think it looks good. My only problem is as many people have noted - the inclusion of the voice-acting, I hope there isn't a change of tone from the mainline SMT titles. In fact I'd be kind of disappointed if it was like say SMT : DDS.

Hail, peons, for I have come as ambassador from the great and bountiful Blueberry Butt Explosion
Never played a main line SMT title before. Played Personas 3 and 4, though.

I will give this one a shot.

You're missing out. SMT games are very very different. They're infinitely more creepy, and there's something unwelcoming about SMT games. Exploring a world that clearly does not want you there.

I guess the argument over whether the scenes are celshaded CG or hand drawn anime doesn't even matter since the scenes don't even look particular animated at all. Lol.

Interesting settings though. There are a bunch of different background designs in the trailer, and the realtime scene at the end shows 5 different areas. Looks pretty SMT, but also rather... early? The game might not be out before mid-2013 at this rate.

Time travel? That last scene seemed to show the main character (?) standing on a street corner but it was shifting time periods.

Edit: also seems to show some kind of astmospheric disturbance over Tokyo with what looks like some kind of plasma storm.

Anything interesting being said by all the voices? I just heard Akuma a lot and assume it's SMT boilerplate heh.

The feeling of isolation and solitude remains strong, which is very nice to see.

I love speculating though. My imagination is running wild trying to decipher the images.

You have any thoughts on what we may be seeing?

I dunno. I think I'll wait for a formal unveil honestly. There isn't much in the trailer other than "this is SMT4". Everything they're showing is just teases which have no real context. The themes seem to be the usual SMT themes of demons and humans co-existing, destroying/remaking the world, law and chaos, etc. Not much to pick up. I like the desert setting with the giant stone head on it though. I wonder if this is a post SMT3 setting... :)

Wonder what's going on at :42, at first I figured it was more concept art but there are a lot of practical details, maybe some kind of world map?

I gotta finish Nocturne.

The shift between a clean/green landscape inhabited by people in blue and white robes and a ruined Earth makes me wonder if maybe they are going back to a direct continuation from SMT2, and this is the EDEN ship returning to Earth after some time.

Probably not since the ruins we see are of "modern" Tokyo rather than Tokyo Millennium.

In any case, this seems more teaser than trailer so I won't go on media blackout just yet. I also get the same feeling that things are still early and this might be a late 2013 game, which is actually fine by me, I'd like the chance to give Eternal Punishment and Soul Hackers their proper due.

Well, having COMPs definitely implies they're going back to the SMT1-2 sort of setting, rather than a conceptual one like SMT3. But I wonder if they plan on tying in elements from all the previous SMT games... including SJ.

The trailer was great, managed to get me excited even without revealing a whole lot! Hopefully the localization is quick once this does get released in Japan next year.

So you're saying this is more like SMT4-2, then? :V
