Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII announced for 2013 [Up3: Famitsu Details]

Tragic victim of fan death
What may be surprising is the fact that the upcoming sequel's title isn't "Final Fantasy XIII-3", despite serving as a direct sequel to XIII-2 and (we're told) bringing the Etro-vs.-Chaos storyline of the XIII titles to a definitive close. This may not make much sense to you, the gamer who wants to have a consistent little row of game names all lined up neatly on your game collection shelf. On the other hand, it makes perfect sense from a marketing perspective: Lightning seems to command higher regard among many fans than the game she starred in. Why not give her top billing? Square's simply borrowed a page from its subsidiary Eidos' book, back when Lara Croft's name took top billing over the "Tomb Raider" title. (1up.com)

I can think of reasons why they named this the way they did. That's not why I'm upset.

Hopefully more than just the tried and true Blitz, Ruin, Ruinga, etc that we've grown used to.

Then again, the playable V.Lighting from the XIII-2 dlc actually has a lot of original attacks based on her unique solo paradigms. I can't remember them off the top of my head, but they were pretty much better than anything Noel or Serah learned on their own. Wouldn't be surprised if they borrowed from that for this.

I think it makes some sense to stick to one character, if only because they'll be able to do some crazy visual effects stuff if they don't have to worry about multiple spells from multiple characters coexisting on screen at the same time.

What makes you think Nomura will design her?

Given how they mentioend the eyes and the fact he only worked on certain Faces in XIII-2 makes me believe he will be marketing material and nothing more for this thing.

I just read it in one of these news stories. I swear. Something about not revealing the new design yet because of something.

Darn, I'm slightly interested in this, but I have no interest in playing FFXIII or XIII-2. :/

Guess I'll need to find a decent Let's Play for both of them!

In the conference they said they asked Nomura to do new design of lightning for this game.

Man, the premise for this game sounds insanely amazing. So it does take place hundreds of years later. Parts of it definitely look inspired by Valhalla, and he confirmed that is Etro's shine/castle. He confirmed that is Cocoon 2 floating in the sky.

So, 4 islands and Cocoon 2? Hot damn. Wilderness, deserts, forests, and major urban areas including slums, and cyberpunk criminals? Religious garb people with masks and mechanical backpacks? Hot damn.

Totally new battle system and gameplay style? Open world? Holy shit.

Sounds like Valhalla and Pulse joined somehow after the door opened. Then chaos has basically been consuming the entire world for hundreds of years, like it consumed Muin and Etro. He said beyond the waters is just an abyss, and that you can see the ethereal waterfalls. He said you can see tons of insane geography and landmarks from the monorail. Wow.

For all the shit Toriyama gets, honestly, his games excite me the most. This is just a super exciting concept. So Lightning
wakes up hundreds of years later in Etro's Shrine? Will she be regarded as a queen? A Goddess? Is anyone else even still alive? What is Bhunivelze like, and why do people live there AND on the surface? They also hinted that a whole new religion has sprouted up, with Luxurion worshipping the god Bhunivelze. That's new.

SUPER hyped.

This sounds like the FF game I've been looking for. Considerable hyped for this, even more so because we can finally move the fuck on from FFXIII and get to Versus or something else.

This post would have fit nicely in a FFXIII-2 announcement thread.

I saw and heard him talk about her eyes.

Every picture of Lightning we saw is her design from XIII-2 for the most part so unless something changes from now to release he did nothing more then touch ups at most.

From 1up:
This seems to sum up the essence of Lightning Returns as a whole: An attempt by Square Enix to properly realize all the different play concepts Final Fantasy has flirted with in recent years but failed to commit to. Real-time combat? It's there. An open world with a quest-based, non-linear structure? Supposedly that's in, too, and better realized than FFXIII-2's. Full character customization in which tweaks to her skills corresponds to visual changes? Lightning can go full-in as a physical bruiser, a spell-slinging mage, or even as a more nuanced combatant. From what we understand these abilities are largely gear-based, potentially offering her the same flexibility as characters enjoyed with the Materia system of FFVII and Crisis Core.

:O

That's actually interesting. If they changed the combat system from XIII & XIII-2 that I hate so damn much and change it to a more 'Crisis Core' style, we may have something.

Remember when it was a somewhat reasonable assumption that once XIII-2 and Type-0 promotion ended that Versus would finally have it's shot in the limelight? Good times.

Admittedly the game does sound a bit interesting... but it's the prospect of a short dev time that kind of worries me. A year doesn't seem like nearly long enough to balance, tweak, and fully flesh out the ideas they seem to have here.

Shinta, you are an awesome member. Expressed exactly what I think with this post!

So many unanswered questions! This sounds totally awesome. I can't wait for more info.

Do we know when in 2013? They could release Late Fall.

They could launch December 31st and it wouldn't matter, since gsme's are typically finished 1-2 months out from launch.

The game is gonbs be rushed and it's as simple as that. Likely pretty short as well. Especially if "all new world" is meant to indicate new assets. Which also makes me think it'll be the worst game in the trilogy from a graphical standpoint.

Well, now that you mention it, if we have to swap between paradigms, I wonder how fast it'll have to go (in terms of animating to switch it up)? In this setting it has to be snappy otherwise it won't work. They can't use the same Paradigms they used for her in that DLC because, iirc, she didn't have a medic-like one, did she?

I looked at the final DLC as a preview for this game, tbh. So I guess in a way I kind of expected it, but I didn't want it to come to pass. A lot of her solo attacks were better than the regular ones that Noel and Serah used, but since they want to go back to the premise of 'Lightning as a Soldier' for this game, I wonder if she'll be as strong as she is as a goddess?

After XIII-2 ending, I want to see what happens next, so that's ok. But that doesn't change the fact that FFXIII shouldn't have had a sequel in the first place.

And Let Toriyama do his thing, at least he won't have time to be involved in FFXV this way.

Hiroyuki Ito has to step in and take control of the next numbered game. Then we'll all be happy forever.

fa real, is the demand really that much higher that they won't actually make something that everyone is demanding?!

The fans demand a remake of Final Fantasy VII. So naturally they give us more of stuff we don't want. I think maybe someone has a hearing problem over there.

People have been demanding an FF7 remake for years now, guess they don't give a fuck LOL. They say you we want more LIGHTNING!!!!!

What exactly are they not making?

Versus is in development, they have off shoots and new games like TR FF and Bravery Default shipping soon and given SE's size it's very possible that XV is in development by another team.

Granted I get the not showing bit, but the not developing isn't close to true.

Each FFXIII game we get one less playable character in the party. That means if we get another sequel there will be no actual playable characters in the party and it will just be Football Manager FFXIII edition.

I'd buy it.

The name sounds dumb. Fortunately everything else sounds great, looking forward to it.

But can we at least have the game running at a solid frame rate S-E? Please?

Please?:(
