Heh, found this when I was looking through Sackboy's moveset on the offcial site.

Isn't ESP and Lightbox doing iOS development now?

I think so, but what does that have to do with Twisted Metal turning a profit? They're an independent developer. They aren't owned by Sony, so they have no obligation to continue developing Twisted Metal games for Sony. I'm sure if Sony wanted them to, they'd contract them out for a sequel, but who knows.

There's certainly nothing wrong with iOS development, and it can be very profitable for smart developers. Developing for iOS or Android is a great way to make some nice money to keep your company going, while pre-production on another, possibly larger, project is underway. I don't think ESP or Lightbox are particularly large developers to begin with.

I'm not sure how well Starhawk did (I heard it wasn't spectacular, but NeoGAF has a flair for the dramatic when it comes to sales), and I have no idea the type of budget that SH had, so who knows what's happening at Lightbox. In either case, both studios are independent, and will only work for Sony if contracted to do so. They're free to pursue whatever projects they want. Seeing that Sony owns both Twisted Metal and Starhawk, I imagine they banked the bulk of the profit from both games (as I stated in my earlier post, salaries and marketing have already been paid to the developers and marketers).

I suppose that's one of the benefits of wholly owning an IP if you are the developer, you can keep the lion's share of the profits, and use it to fund your next project(s).

Starhawk bombed

Because they refused to listen to everyone sounding the alarms. Look I see the appeal of PSASBR and think it will do well, but from the Starhawk private beta in November (7 months before release) I knew it was going to struggle if they didn't make changes. Myself and others were vocal about those changes and yet they did not listen and in the end they were wrong

I only played a bit of the Starhawk beta, but I bought the full game and it was great. Personally, I think Starhawk's problem was poor marketing, not the quality of the game Sony needs to do just more than the bare minimum when it comes to marketing. Things aren't like they were in the PS1 and PS2 games, when everyone was high on PlayStation. A lot of cynicism earlier this generation really hurt the PS3. They need to invest more in marketing. The perception of the PS3 has certainly changed, but most people just aren't aware of the games available for it.

Starhawk was great. It's a shame it didn't do better.

I'm trying to catch up on games I've missed because of Allstars and recently got the Jak and Daxter collection. I played it when it first came out as a teen and really did not enjoy it, I collected 5(?) or so Power-orbs and never touched it since. But now, I'm absolutely loving this game, I'm about done w/ the first one and I only played it for 2 days... it's so addicting. I'm enjoying it more then I did Mario Galaxy... haha

I think it helps that it looks absolutely gorgeous. 1080p + 60fps is dreamy.

I don't understand what makes 700K a sign of the series disappearing?

People seem to have this mentality that if a game doesn't reach 6 million units, it's a bomb.

I can't speak for the budget of All Stars, but I doubt it's approaching MGS4 or Killzone 2 levels. All Stars is not a $50 million budget game.

Over the course of 3 years, I can see the game's budget being anywhere between $10-$15 million, if that much. If the game sold 700k, that'd be roughly $42 million. Please keep in mind that salaries have already been paid, marketing has already been paid, so that $42 mil will be simply recouping what Sony put into the game. They'd have made a nice, fat profit off of All Stars if it sold 700k, and more than likely we'd see a sequel.

Even David Jaffe stated that they were happy with the sales of Twisted Metal PS3. I imagine it's because, even though it didn't sell like the old entries in the series, and didn't breach 1 million units, it probably still turned a profit for the company.

I don't see All Stars being a 1 million seller out the gate, but like many of Sony's new IPs, I imagine it will be a slow burner, and certainly cross 2 million before it's all said and done. I think, with this game, word of mouth is going to be one of the key contributors to this title's success over pure marketing tactics like commercials and billboards. Many skeptics have been converted by the demo units out there, and various events.

I think it will have solid numbers release week, and will probably improve even more thanks to Black Friday. But I really hate talking about sales. I just had to say my thoughts on that 700k number.

Not every game needs to post CoD numbers. Especially if the production team has been on the ball with managing their budget and maximizing their staff's skillset.
I've said this before but I fully expect PSASBR to be a million seller no prob (I hope I don't get to eat crow ;). The delay makes it dangerously close and just after AC3 and COD so that has me a lil worried :( .)

Even if the game makes a profit it faces the same problem talked about in the translation/SE thread. They might want to use that money for some other project if they think it has a chance to be more successful than PSASBR2. That said PSASBR has one advantage to stay relevant even if it only turns a small profit and that is its marketing value for other Sony series.

Lost all credibility.
It'd be cool if the game dressed your sackboy however you have him customized in LBP by analyzing the save, and also had it so all clothing DLC was cross compatible between the games.

It would be awesome but also propably too much work to get it compatible for all versions and such when PSASBR has 2 different developers on different platforms allready and they had to delay the game once allready. Apparently alt costumes having alt colours made it just in time for the release and I'd imagine that being way easier to implement.

Well hopes up for the sequel I guess.

Yeah you're right. The Crash pic made me think of how crazy the possibilities would be.

Well I should clarify. People were warning that the game was not fun and worse accessible to many people. The beta drove this home as people were base raped and rage quittin was everywhere. Not exactly the kind of message you want from a beta. supporters like myself were simply asking for some pre built non destructible resources at the home base and capturable forward bases. Build and battle would then be used to fortify. Boom an infinitely more enjoyable and accessible game that also helps protect from base raping.

Yeah, I agreed. Also I felt same thing for SBR, because I got a lot of ragequitters because I have previous experiences from private beta.

Definitely. I can see Sony looking at any potential sales spikes in the HD Collections of the series that are represented in All Stars, and deeming All Stars a success based off of broadening the market of their stable of franchises.

I still think it's going to be a success. I think they should start using that Attract Trailer in their theater adds, instead of the Live Action one. I like the Live Action one, but I think the Attract Trailer is more fun, and showcases the entire roster.

So I saw the COD games went up on the store before the store update (I assume it went up at midnight) hopefully PSAS goes the same way!

Then in a way people would actually be able to play as Cloud, Snake and Crash -> not gonna happen.

Wednesday, November 14, from 2-4PM Pacific (10PM GMT)

Awesome thanks, will definitely be tuning in
Should be fun to see all the final menus, and everything of that nature. Plus I always invite more gameplay footage. Should be pretty good quality if it's coming from IGN directly too

P.S. recently decided I might want to try to main Sackboy, keep that in mind for our awesome duo Mink haha

Gotcha

But Fatty P rocks in this game. I will actually probably take her online the first week to get all the online trophies easily.

Ha, I was going to do the same with Parappa for the first couple of days of owning the game. The way I figured it, players will generally be at their crappiest early on, so it's best that I get in there with my experienced Parappa and cram those online trophies while the going is good. At the same time though, I do want to take a breather with the CPU in Arcade mode. Dying to see the intro/rivalry/ending scenes for at least half the roster.
