Halo |OT12| Last One Out, Get the Lights

For the last time.

Bungie didn't re-use campaign maps for multiplayer. Every multiplayer map was made for multiplayer FIRST and then slotted into campaign. The only map that was the reverse was Boneyard, because a multiplayer map had to be cut late in development.

The reason they did this was so they could have the multiplayer maps be budgeted into the campaign artists' workload so they'd be graphically on par with the campaign.
If anything it made for some very interesting campaign spaces. Never understood the hate for that decision. Unless of course, people had understood it completely backwards, which may be the case.

I got crapped on here for accepting aspects of Reach everyone else hated, like bloom and armor lock. I like Halo 4 for what it is, as I did Reach, but there's no denying that Halo 4 is a less complete package with regard to the feature set. Everybody here mostly has the same mindset though: keeps what works best and leave what doesn't. I knew Armor Lock was broken and still had fun with it. I know Promethean Vision is broken and still try have fun with it. Why? Well, what the hell else am I gonna do? I'm playing video games.
I see Halo 4 as an amazing first step at solving some lingering problems with Halo - namely presentation/image quality, floatiness, and accessible multiplayer. Old hands here may cry blasphemy, but they've succeeded on all of those accounts big time. Yet again they said they'd try to inject more story and fiction into the game itself, but that's actually where things have gone one step forward and two steps back, at least from where I sit. But Spartan Ops could be something - at least the story so far makes sense.

This place is ridiculous. Reminiscing about Reach and Bungie? You guys have the worst standards I've even seen. No wonder I disagree with so many people on here.

To echo what steely said on twitter...

I really loved this game in the beginning but all the questionable decisions are starting to get to me and I'm feeling frustrated.

Reach was a full, mainline Halo game.

yea but you know what i mean. No chief, etc. Also not that i am for it but i believe they just made it to fulfil their contract. They wanted to be done with halo 3 but MS didn't want to,they still needed two games even though odst was not a full game lol.

Just for the record I'm loving Halo 4 over Reach, just needs time for updates, meta game experience and familiarity with maps/flows etc.

I'm not really against the asset re-purposing, I actually found it fun to have those sections in campaign and multiplayer. However the point still stands they had a cut down team and used smart development processes to deliver a full game with Reach.

I'm not against it but in either direction it's a fact of the team size and development mantra of Reach.

Whoever designed the UI in this game should be ashamed. They had a good base with Halo 2/3/Reachs UI and all they needed to do was continue to refine it. But no, they had to throw it all out the window for complete garbage UI that looks like something out of a Kinect game with the massive tiles that take up too much space.

Even Halo Wars had a far better UI that was much more similar to 2/3/Reach.

You.. must enjoy life :]

Kinda off topic but for fans of Adam Sessler, he has joined Revision 3.

Fuck yes. The Sess is back!

Funny because I distinctly remember Bungie saying many times how ODST was the cut-down team and the secret project of Reach had most of the team working right after Halo 3.

Halo 4 is better than Reach, at least Halo 4 has its core mechanics in check despite whatever issues you have with its structure.

reach has the core mechanics much better. reach only had 1 "perk" slot. meanwhile h4 has all 3 perks, classes,killstreaks/carepackges,loadouts. reach is closer to what halo is that h4 even though none are really it.

In fact, I'd say one of my main complaints (besides ordinance/server browser) is how fucking ridiculous it is that normal weapons and Snipers can do so much damage to vehicles.

We clearly have different ideas of what 'core mechanics' are.

Jump height, running speed, melee strength, grenade strength, (lack of) bloom etc. Halo 4's core mechanics are FAR closer to Halo 3's.

Yeah, I'm really happy about this. It was sad to see him leave X Play, but this will be even better.

By the way, for others with Kinect, Microsoft is giving away Wreckateer for free for today and tomorrow in celebration of XBL's 10th anniversary.

All I know is this is the best its ever felt to be a Spartan and shoot things. That core is rock solid and just as much simple fun as I feel when playing Anniversary. Everything else is extra.

Pretty much.

Anyone who doesn't see Halo 4 as a solid re-calibration and a recuperative step back in the right direction is kidding themselves. That said 343i, when people say they want something 'new and original' in Halo 5, they mean new for the genre, not new for the series.

Not the right direction at all. I rather them actually do something new instead of ripping off cod. Halo 3 was the last true halo game and will forever remain like that most likely.

My last point was a reference to the futility of them ripping off CoD. They should be defining the genre, not playing catch up with it.

It is the right direction, Halo:Reach had abandoned the mechanics the series had upheld consistently throughout the whole trilogy. If Halo 1 was SM64 and Halo 3 was Super Mario Galaxy, then Reach was Super Mario Sunshine. With Halo 4 returning those core mechanics, the series can get back on track to becoming truly great again.

I'm still enjoying this game a lot, but yeah it has some big flaws. Some decisions 343 made literally make no sense, but hopefully they are paying attention and taking notes.

Exile needs less vehicles and better spawns.

Global Ordinance is shitty IMO

Weapon flinch is a bit too strong

Spartan Ops is lacking

Needs more options in Forge and Custom games to emulate classic settings and a playlist for it

etc.

Still, I really am enjoying Infinity Slayer, Dominion, Oddball, CTF, etc.

Heh, wonder what that would have been like -

From this 343I'er.

Mannnnnn I want to fight some 343 Brutes. =(

I hope Brutes make a return in the future, but before then I hope we get more Forerunner/Promethean enemy types.

Halo 5 should have these guys to fight somehow:

Have them maybe be less bullet spongey but more engaging and interactive than the Knights.

Forge in MM?

Possible locations for new MP maps:

Source. Published in Awakening: The Art of Halo 4.

Ooh, if they could get it to play good I would love for a map set in the jungle from SP.

Domain Terminal Art from Waypoint.

That art is so good.. man I wish 343 put more stuff like this in the actual main story of the game.

Holy shit, did anyone know this was in the Waypoint store?!

Should've worn this on Halloween.

EDIT: Actually looking through the Waypoint store. They've got some pretty neat stuff. Chief Illustrations shirt is really tempting.

Thats amazing. :lol

Now we need a Didact mask.

It didn't return to the core mechanics though. they added even more cod elements than reach did. they sped up the game in movement and sprint along with fast respawn. there is no way that feels like halo 1-3.

My thoughts exactly. Things've changed since the Honeymoon phase has passed. Still a great game, but the inconsistencies and problems are pushing me away.

I wonder if when 343 play this game and get killed by a crouching camo sniper, they smile to themselves and say, "yesssss, this is the game I dreamed of making."

Every Promethean concept we've seen looks better than the actual version. :(

I think the same. In fact I find some games I go without using my AA at all. Sometimes I'll have streaks of games I don't even bother using my AA. It's a testament to the gunplay and base mechanics.

I also have over 11 spartan points. I just don't have any reason to unlock different abilities, tacticals or support upgrades.

DMR, pistol, frag, camo, dexterity & shielding

OR

BR, plasma pistol, plasma grenade, camo, dexterity & shielding.

It's more than enough for me to up against anything thrown at me and I totally happy with the sandbox really.

I wouldn't call it an "A" team and a "B" team.

It was just their first mainline game that didn't seem to have all hands contributing. There were plenty of guys from the "A" team working on Reach, but perhaps some portion of the "A" team had already moved on. Kind of like how ODST was a small but dedicated team, but at a different scale.

Reach was an amazing game that had support issues from the divorce/handover to 343.

Destiny has had all-hands contributing since Reach launched (with the exception of the DLC and support teams for a few months). I am unbelievably hyped for Bungie's next game, if they've been content to keep working and stay quiet this long they must really have something special on their hands.

2013. Believe.

I always enjoyed reading your posts about the future of Bungie Duncan. I am unbelievably hyped as well. Hell, the only reason I stick around bungie.net so much now is most than just the community, it's the hype of when they're going to unveil their new beast.

I like your tagline as well. 2013. Believe.

That idea Kylej posted about a map with 2 crossing rivers that can push objective runners downstream toward eachother and get stronger as the teams score changes could be partially realized with gravity zones and (Dominion?) gametype labels...

...Anyway, busy trying out a elongation remake with forge.
