So as someone who has no knowledge of MGS and has never played any of the games, but is interested by the last couple of things we've seen, where would be the best place to jump in? The HD Collection or MGS1?

MGS1, then the HD collection. Trying to jump in at a later point would be incredibly confusing, except maybe MGS3.

MGS1 -> MGS2HD -> MGS3HD

I recommend you forget that other games in the franchise exist.

So, anybody else wonder how many hours of movie there will be in? Metal Gear Solid 4 had 20 hours of cinematic. There is seasons of Tv show with less running time.
So, are we going for the 35-40 hours mark?

Play them all in order of release. I envy you, these games are so good.

MGS1 is always the place to start, then the HD collection if you want more. If you're really, really adverse to the drastically aging, highly polygonal, motion blur-savvy land of the PS1, then I guess it's acceptable to straight hit the HD collection, but MGS1 is an absolute classic.

Start from MGS1, it's arguably the best in the series. You'll appreciate the overall arc of the games more that way too.

The necessary games to play:

MGS1 - MGS2 - MGS3

Now, you could potentially stop here, as these three form quite a strong trilogy. However, nothing wrong with moving onto MGS4 if you want to as it'll close a few loose ends from MGS2. The game does have some bright elements, but I'll point out that it's quite mediocre overall. Or, disappointing is probabaly the more appropriate word as Kojima spends a too much time on needless crap and the expectations were very high coming in from the original three which were all very strong in one way or another.

Forget Portable Ops and Peace Walker though, as they're shit. I'm a die hard fan of this series and even I feel like they're just there to crap on things and make it worse.

I don't see how people can say it's a terrible trailer after finding out it's MGS. Its entire purpose is to mess with fans and give them something to pay attention to for a while. And it worked perfectly, because there are a couple thousand posts in this thread.

There is seasons of Tv show with less running time.

It's insane when you put it like that. But no, I can't imagine it being much more than that really, although it's not like we have never been surprised by Kojima before.

JoshHood: For what MGS games to play, I think everyone saying 1,2,3 is right. I played the hell out of Peace Walker HD, but it doesn't add a whole lot to the story that couldn't just as easily gotten from a summary on a Wiki somewhere (which is what you should do, as Peace Walker seems to precede Ground Zeroes going by the first trailer).

A complete season of the Big Bang Theory is 6 hours and 50 minute. You could watch 3 season with 23 episode of the Big Bang Theory or any normal 30 min show in fact, before finishing all of Metal Gear Solid 4 cutscenes. That's enormous I think.

Cheers for all the great answers guys! So I don't need to worry about the non-Solid earlier Metal Gear games at all?

Edit: and the Vita version of the HD collection is fine aside from lack of Peace Walker, right?

Why do people keep saying this? It's canon and takes place post-MGS.

Because they don't like the game so they whine about it. People got whiney about Portable Ops too and them including bits of it in MGS4 since they were all like "omg I'm not considering it canon"

Peace Walker is not great, sorry.

Who ever thought grinding would make it to a MGS game.

You don't have to do any grinding to play through and beat Peace Walker. If you grind anything, that is your choice and it's mainly just required to do the games extras and MP. But the entire single player story line can be played through without having to repeat anything.

Replaying missions for high-ranked soldiers. Replaying bosses for parts. There's probably more.

None of which is needed for the actual story.

Pretty sure it took me less than 20 hours to beat MGS4.

So what's the consensus or the official word on this? Is this ground zeroes or a different game? We are getting two mgs games? Ground Zeroes and this?

Grinding isn't all that necessary, but the point is it's still in there.

What's far more annoying is when
you have to locate what's-his-face without having a clue, so if you don't check the shooting range you won't find him. And why would you? You don't expect a training area to be linked to the story.

Currently polling second in Australia's federal election (first in the Gold Coast), this feral may one day be your Bogan King.
Going by the extended trailer for Ground Zeroes, there's XX noted moments where the lens flair visual effects are associated specifically with a distinct audio cue, the same as when "Snake" has the light shoved in his face at the end of the Phantom Pain trailer.

1:05 - Early on when the camera catches a spotlight directly.
3:50 - Camera catches bright lights behind the American flag.
5:50 - Burnface and co get in the helicopter. Audio is accompanied by striking orange streak distortion effect.
8:58 - When Snake pulls out his high tech holographic radar device. Similar orange effect as above.
13:05 - This time as Snake gets into the helicopter, again with the orange streaks.

Pretty sure you can't get all the parts you need for ZEKE, and thus the real ending, on your first time fighting each boss

I think you can, but you'd have to be quite lucky or know what to do.

Doesn't the search light make a noise as it sweeps near Snake too?

GZ demo has a 8+ min IN-GAME INTRO. That is too much time not to be segmented into several pieces. Orange streaks are simple checkpoints...

lolololol.

There are several uninterrupted cut-scenes in MGS4 that break the 20 minute mark. There's a section in the game where two hours go by without you actually playing the thing(unless you count moving the little robot around in a briefing)

No one knows, but it would be odd for there to be two Big Boss games. So, unless they edited out the real main character in PP, I'm going with they're one and the same, GZ being the Tanker portion of the main game.

Two games for console within the same year or so of each other would be odd but one for console and one for Vita wouldn't imo.

Whatever the case I hope its two games, the more MGS the merrier.

The consensus seems to be that they're the same game, but I don't believe that. There's no official word as at this point it's not officially a MGS game or made by Kojima.
Wot i fink:
GZ: Peace Walker 2, Co-op and open world infiltration MGS with base building.
PP: Weird shit happening with one arm.
But they could be packaged together, if that would sell better.

Me thinks "Ground Zeroes" and "The Phantom Pain" are just the names of the trailers and the real subtitle for MGS 5 hasn't been released yet. I think they will reveal it at E3.

and yes, it's the same game. GZ is just the prologue to MGS 5. Just like the Tanker was in MGS 2 and Virtuous Mission in MGS 3.

Kojima said Ground Zeroes is the prologue to MGS 5 but that doesn't mean it's a different game.

and there is NO WAY this is possible on Vita, lol.

MGS5 spanning several years would be brilliant.

I still hope we get to play as Solid, but eh, I doubt it. :(

That's probably it. Although I'd love an entire game made of firey unicorns and whales soaring in the sky and eating helicopters.
In a way, this being MGS makes me a bit less excited than I was when first seeing the trailer and not knowing what it was really about. All the puzzle/trolling stuff is brilliant and I can't wait to play the game and try to understand it all, but I don't know, I was all "wooh, weird new ip".
