Youtube really needs to rework their entire video flagging system, shit is beyond absurd at this point.

Can't really fight the big copyright lobby, even if you're Google. The insta-takedown system is probably the only reason YT hasn't been sued to bankruptcy by now.

Wait, so you guys are telling me that they take down channels for trailers too?! Why!? Isn't that free publicity?! Will your game sell worse if they distributed a trailer? I don't get it, what's the reasoning behind this this!?

If it turns out that you allow ads on your youtube account then you're essentially making money off someone else's work. It's not "free publicity" if you're being paid (no matter how small the amount).

I recently finished re-watching all the old vids he had up the other night, on a whim. Glad I did that now, cuz unfortunately, those may be tough to come by for a while...

He heard it from a friend, who heard it from a friend, who heard it from a friend, who heard it from a friend, who heard it from TheArchfiend and Asalieri.

I heard James Rolfe got his huge video game collection from selling swamp land to stupid folks.

It's too early for Aprils Fools YouTube. ><

This happens all the time. Back when I use to have a channel where I would record game footage I got so many even if the content is 100% my own. The biggest culprit was ign for me dunno why but I got so many from them

Yeah, it's like when Giantbomb would post a quicklook on youtube and they would get flagged an receive a "As seen on IGN" under the video lol....wtf Youtube.

Well the problem is YouTube either terminates the account or blocks the video without asking questions. Then you need to go through a lengthy process to prove its your content it is abit ridiculous.

Bane? Get them on board, I'll call it in.

Yeah, Irate Gamer lacks any sort of charm or humor, and many of his videos are just boring. As well as unoriginal and lazy. Seriously, most of the time he only spends an hour playing a modern game. He's even admitted it a couple times, rendering the review null & void as he didn't bother to beat it.

Sucks but will probably be resolved. I get copyright violations on my videos like every week :(

Thankfully the vast majority are just like "it's fine but we're going to put a 'buy' link in the description for the music used'". The ones that mute videos or actually copyright strike are actually insane.

There ought to be repercussions for making unsubstantiated copyright claims and exploiting DMCA against direct competitors.

I hope James discloses the source of the complaints so the internet can apply some mob justice, I have very little sympathy for corporations with legal departments that spend their day desperately looking for reasons to justify their presence.

Youtube getting lame, I was going to start making movie reviews or really just me sitting in front my webcam rambling for 10 minutes. The last vid I did got flagged for copyright and monetary disabled for it. I was like, this simply isnt worth even after a drawn out appeal I still didnt get monetary back for it.

The automated system for flagging stuff really needs to go. I remember when YouTube teamed with the Democrats to present the Democratic National Convention, then put up the First Lady's speech, only to have it immediately brought down by copyright claims from pretty much every news organization known to man.

Same thing happened with the Mars Rover landing stuff. NASA put it up, and all the news orgs robots flagged it as copyright violations.

Needless to say, both examples were videos in the public domain.

I'll always have a soft spot for AVGN but his vids haven't held a candle to his early shit for some time. With that said I hope he gets his channel restored. Now, if they block Angry Joe there'll be hell to pay!

It's not so much that they were public domain, but that the wrong organisations were claiming copyright. As people have mentioned here where IGN claims ownership of trailers and in-game footage of games they report on.

But as I said, this system has been implemented to apease copyright holders, were they to remove it they'd get sued daily over videos that actual infringe on copyright and aren't removed within a day after the initial report. It would cost them alot in staff to remove all the materials manually alone, let alone all the subsequent legal fees. That's why they remove first, and than evaluate later.

The good news is that a lot of Internet reviewers have back-ups. James has Cinemassacre, Springboard and Blip. Angry Joe has his own site, Springboard and Blip as well.

The people that should be worried are the ones that solely rely on YouTube. Like PewDiePie, Tobuscus, and the Irate Gamer. You may have noticed a pattern. People that stick only to YouTube tend to kind of suck.

Why is it I never heard of this guy until two days ago and now all of a sudden his name is everywhere on here?

I am sure he will get his account back soon after talking to the right people. Blame the copyright holders not Youtube. In most cases Youtube has to take down channels/videos automatically if it detects that there may be copyrighted material. The content owners have the decision to either monetize (with adverts) the videos or block them outright (Warner brothers does this, most others just monetize). It is by law that Youtube must remove these videos immediately upon notification in America/Europe.

The reason why it became like this was because at one point the record/movie companies were threatening to sue individual uploaders en-masse as well as Youtube. Youtube implemented the automated checking and take down measures to appease the copyright holders, it would have been very very risky to go to battle with the copyright holders, they have a massive lobby and tons of cash. The tides have been shifting though, Youtube and others have been lobbying goverments to change some of these draconian laws copyright laws and have had some success:
http://www.economist.com.hk/node/21561885. Hopefully in the future shit wouldn't be so messed up.

Don't forget a WWE video put up by the official WWE channel which got taken down due to a request by the WWE. Think about that for a moment.

Doesn't get more Inception-ish than that.

*shrugs* He's been around for years. I guess that thread about his controversy video got some attention. Most people only know him for that embarrassing Geoff Keighly interview he did, but he's moved past it, as has Geoff (they even buried the hatchet at E3 2011).

I thought DMCA claims were made under the threat of perjury? If you don't own what you're claiming that is. Or am I mistaken?

Its either the automated system or Youtube at this point. It was created due to massive pressure from the copyright holders who were threatening to shut down youtube and sue individual uploaders. The copyright owners would not allow youtube to exist if the system didn't exist or didn't work as intended.
