Michel Ancel and Rayman dev team show up at fan(?) protest RE: Rayman Legends delay

That Yves Guillemot in the bottom right. I know who's gonna be pissed about that.

Definitively a fan, with the Michel Ancel's love in the flag. Or a very fawning co-worker :p

I bought Origins a while ago but never played it. I just downloaded it and started playing.

WOW! This is the most beautiful game i've ever seen. So much fun. Can't believe I waited so long. Makes me wonder what other great games i've downloaded but never got around to.

Now i'm a little more upset that Legends has been delayed. Hopefully this outcry will result in them going back to the original release date.

There are devs that work crunch time on games that end up never seeing the light of day. Same goes with movies and tv shows. It does suck, but its the nature of the business and as long as they are being compensated, lets stop short before mentioning unfair labor practices or worker abuse.

When something "sucks" shouldn't they try to change the things that "suck"?

Ubisoft would be really smart to revoke their decision and release their game this month.

With the amount of attention this is creating.. it's basically free marketing.

This can't be happening, as i explained in another thread, the game hasn't hit the submission to Nintendo phase even at the beginning of February. So at best, we will have Legends in the second half of March, if they change their mind about this decision.

Hmm. From what I can tell, Ubi might well want to consider not bothering to release anything else on Wii U, as their name is essentially mud at this point.
I wonder if they'll find a way to blame Nintendo again when Legends bombs on all platforms in the fall.

"If only you hadn't heavily promoted Legends as a major Wii U title, we could've delayed the game without a huge backlash and sales wouldn't have suffered as a result!"

Ehh, it seems really tongue-in-cheek.

I mean, take a look at Ancel (left most). Does that look like the face of someone who's seriously protesting?

Since it went unnoticed on page 8, I'll put it here again :

"As far as I know, these photos are not people from Ubisoft Montpellier protesting about the delay of Rayman Legends but people for Ubisoft Montpellier posing for a souvenir with FANS that want Rayman Legends to be released earlier on Wii U. Just saying."

No studio would be happy about such a delay and Ancel kinda shows it with this picture, but this isn't a direct demonstration against Ubisoft.

that's what this is
Pretty much. It's evidently playful.

I'm surprised it's being taken as insubordination or trying to rise a shitstorm against the hand that feeds you. We truly look at everything in black or white these days.

That said, even though I'm fully aware I shouldn't be holding my breath, I admit I'm kind of hoping the sudden spike in popularity for the game leads to some reconsideration on the release date to capitalize on everyone's interest before it fizzles back.

Yeah, but delaying the game is the best business/management decision they could hope for.

It is absolutely not as i pointed out above. Its the worst decison and thats why you are seeing so much backlash even from the devs. Ubi can take it and move on, Wii U owners get screwed out of a game they could use right now and the devs name is getting dragged through the mud and the game they worked passionately on is now getting sent out to die for no reason. They will get blamed and they know it so they are trying to make a stand. Management and Execs can make dumbass decisions quite often because who is going to call them on it.

and march is pretty crowded with monster hunter, need for speed, and other late ports and games found on other systems. ubisoft should just cancel the game for wii u.

Holy crap! Today's real megaton is that more than two people can have the same first name.
Wow! Never expected this.

IF it is just a PR stunt, it is an effective one. I now want to buy the game to support the devs.

I thought this Rayman was Wii U exclusive?

I thought the September one was going to be one of those Sigma+ ordeals

Been out of the loop on this one

Just a thought; what are team Rayman doing now given the game is done? Are Ubisoft screwing them around?

Porting the game to 360 and PS3 till September and cutting the second demo Wii U owners are getting as a sort of "compensation" for losing the exclusive.

So basically instead of the cool down time they were expecting to get when the game went gold sometime last week or this week, their bosses have now told them nobody will be enjoying the fruits of their labours for another 7 months, and they now have to spend longer on this title by porting it - easier said than done when you pretty much have to remove the Wii U exclusive features like gamepad use.

So have we confirmed these are fans or members of the dev team? I mean sort of hope it's Ancel + fans as he's likely got enough leverage to get away with doing something like this without having his knuckles rapped for it.

While I doubt it would change anything, couldn't Nintendo prioritize it and get it out before the second half of March (maybe the beginning?)? IDK much about this but would be curious in a hypothetical situation if they could shorten the time needed to get it released.

I don't see it happening anyway, so again this is mainly a hypothetical.

Honestly I'm mind-boggled anyone thought different. It's clearly Ancel and some fans, and then Ancel and some dev team members and some fans. I actually thought the whole thread was proceeding on that basis, but now that I re-read you appear to be correct and people think this is just the dev team.

I just read through this whole thread on my lunch break...

Everyone wants baconsammy to come in.

Why is he MIA?

Haha, he hasn't posted here yet? He's posted in every other thread about this situation..

Wii U version is being held back to launch with the other ports.

At this point maybe they'd have to push the release to March, but I think the amount of buzz could be great for the game in the long run. Release it early for starved Wii U owners and Rayman fans, and let there be a slow burn with sales until the PS360 versions, which sell to anyone who doesn't own a Wii U. They'd just have to work out the pricing and added content, though.

There's a lot of support rallied for the game. I didn't plan on buying it in the first place, but even I suddenly almost feel like dropping $60 to support the developer.

It's wishful thinking to want the game sooner rather than later, but in all honesty this really is free marketing which could have long term benefits.

You're not a creative type, are you?

I think i know where you coming from. I actually am a creative person - in my free time. When i work, i'm professional and don't let my personal views come in my way.

I really don't think that, especially the Wii U owners, care who makes these games outside of enthusiast who post on such forums as neo-Gaf.

The game would be send to die regardless, from what i read the rate/amount Wii U sells 3rd party software is really bad and no Rayman would be able to change that.

I like to think that someone at Ubisoft has actually used a calculator and some real numbers and based the decision not only on gut feelings.

A lot of people who used a calculator and crunched some real numbers thought Epic Mickey, de Blob and uDraw would all benefit from aiming at a wider audience than just Wii owners, but it doesn't always turn out that way.

So has it been confirmed if they are really protesting or did some fan just stop by with the poster?

That asked, I guess they still decided to take a picture with it.

Not even for Rayman would i travel THIS far ;)

If they will cancel the game then it would pretty disastrous if Ubi does, indeed, release it only on PS3 and 360. They should cancel the game all together.

I wouldn't be surprised if Guillemot was in on it and the two had a laugh about it afterwards.

Seems like a great move to keep the small band of Wii U fans onboard with the game and the dev and they can still hate on the business decision taken by Ubisoft.

This is incredible! Awesome news.

This can't be ignored anymore. I mean, when even the creator of Rayman and the development team want the game released, it's time to take back your decision to delay the game!

Oh thanks, that's good to know. Though it is still a clear message. The devs and Ancel knew that the pictures would be uploaded - so they agree with their message.

Ah OK, so the other 2 flexed their muscles or Ubi just made the business decision to release later on Wii U (get bigger install base probably)

I commented on this in an earlier thread, but I think the key difference is gaming is a creative entertainment industry, and effectively developers are working for *two* groups of people. Directly, they're working for the people who want to profit from the game - the publisher. Indirectly, they're working for the people who want to play and enjoy the game - the players.

From a business standpoint, they want to please the publisher. From an artistic standpoint, they want to please the players. I think you'd struggle to find a dev - at least, one who has pride in his work - that doesn't regard the artistic goals at least on a par and ideally *above* the business goals. And now Ubi's actions mean that Ancel's team have failed in some of their artistic goals through no fault of their own.

I would imagine that in your experience you're only working to please one entity, and if something gets canned, that's because the people you were making it for don't want it any more; that's not the case in this instance.

To give @RichIGN his dues: This is now 'very interesting' Wii U news.

Just wanted to say good post.

You can't actually release late on Xbox 360 and you can't release late on PS3 without exclusive content.
Publishers release late ports all the time, especially on Nintendo's console. Not a big deal.

Ubisoft apologists and corporate ballwashers (to the detriment of the actual creators!) in this thread can fuck right off. :)
When Michel Ancel himself protests this Ubisoft bullshit, corporate apologists truly have no place here.
Exactly, the creators always have my sympathy, and they have the right to protest. Publishers act against the creators all the time, there's nothing wrong to speak to the public once in a while.

I'm also disgusted by some of the posters (mainly a small few) who think these people have no right to be doing this, or should be fired. They've been outspoken about the fact that after all this major crunch time (meaning less time from home, family, friends, etc.) they see no payoff with reception to their game. I'd be royally pissed too. I get that Ubisoft wants to make as much money as possible, but hell, couldn't they just change up the PS360 editions and release them with an alternate title?
There are many people in GAF who are openly against all kind of unions and rather speak for the employers than for the employees. I know some countries don't have well developed rights of workers and a tradition for strikes, but it's still shocking how many people lack solidarity with employees.

amazing dev team! i will buy rayman!
Honestly, I will buy Rayman out of solidarity. Fortunately the decision is very easy because the game will be excellent.

Edit: meh, but thanks for correcting.

THIS. This thread is *VERY* misleading and completely misrepresents what the developers of the game were actually doing.

True. Although i think that this situation here (new Console etc) is a bit different and i do think that the delay as a viable move to sell more copies of this particular game.
