So steam version unlocks at 9 PM PST?

Booo.... I never pre-loaded a game before. I figured it would always unlock at midnight in your own time zone... Guess anyone could change their PC time to cheat it though.

Oh well... sucks that some can play as early as 9pm, I'm not waiting till 1am.

Man if only PSN had this as a day one digital download, I could start playing it in an hour. Instead I have to pick it up from Best Buy tomorrow during lunch and then play it once I get home from work in the evening. Blargh.

I might pick it up from Redbox. Idk.

Usually, save rare occasions, I will never rent games and always buy to support devs... but I could not in good conscience buy this game.

Sorry if it's been discussed, but for those with the PC version who have been playing, controller or M&K? I'm assuming there's controller support?

Before I start I suppose I should say which kinda fans perspective I'm coming from. Loved Tomb Raider over the years up to Angel Of Darkness (which was absolute shite) and after that I never paid any attention to them. I haven't played any of the newer Crystal Dynamics Tomb Raiders so I can't compare it to them.

So far after 4 - 5 hours of play I'm loving it tbh. It does admittedly have a bit of an Uncharted feel but to say it's exactly like that series would be a bit unfair I think, it feels like a mix of that and funnily enough RE4 with some Tomb Raider as well. I'm really liking the hubs and I'm really enjoying getting the collectibles since they involve more platforming than usual. I've done two optional tombs so far and they've been easy as hell. Needless to say I don't think old school Tomb Raider fans who don't like change will appreciate them.

What I really appreciate is the amount of control I have over Lara. Controlling Lara is much, much better than controlling say Drake. She feels a lot more flexible, more nimble and just more fun to play as. Platforming doesn't feel as automated as Uncharted to me, it's very linear this is true but the control you have over Lara at least makes it feel better. Combat is good (the bow's especially great) and I like how the enemies always try to flush you out and really go for you if you give them a chance. I'm playing on Normal so it's not too difficult but I nearly got caught offguard a few times.

One of my favourite things is the real 'sense of place' that the island has. There's something just not quite right and along with the excellent sound design and fantastic graphics (playing PC here) there's a sense of foreboding about the island. It's such an eerie place I can't wait to play more and find out more. I'm certainly enjoying this a lot more than say Uncharted 1 and 3, a series I've never loved as much as some people do. It takes things from here and there but with a little bit of Tomb Raider DNA it feels like its own thing. Can't wait to get stuck into it more after I've had some sleep.

So far, the game seems mechanically sound but its yet to get any real reaction from me. Like, it all feels kind of hollow. Might just be me though. I like shooting dudes in the face with the bow and what Lara does to the dude she gets to the assault rifle from is pretty hilarious, but other than that, I don't know what to say.

empty gaming calorie

I dig this. Can I steal it? I'm gonna steal it.

I've said my piece already. Game is what it is.

CD is now another dev on an unfortunately long list of those I will no longer support.

One day some indie will make a spiritual TR successor and we'll put our money where our mouth is.

I can't go as far as you though. I want to believe we might get a GoL sequel some day.

Oh, and I gotta stay hyped for the new Legacy of Kain game!

Square Enix is comprised of a bunch of morons. How is it that my Square Enix ID is not my Nickname? Why do I need a nickname if I already have an ID?!

It needs an ID? Damn it, I forgot my SquareEnix ID a long time ago. Probably lost the note it was on as well.

That's the thing. I remember every accounts I have and yet, they somehow failed to make sure that SquareEnix ID is also your Nickname. So now the game insists on me to confirm my account but that requires me to pick a nickname that I don't want since some buffoon chose my name.

It's a bit before 1100pm here, but it says unlocked and it's doing the final update now so fingers crossed...

Oh for fucks sake Steam you've been open for hours and now, halfway through unpacking the game you want to update for the 20th time this month?

Understandable.

I probably shouldn't be so salty over this game. Yeah it's one of the last remaining franchises I've been keen on over the years that's managed to retain some of its identity... pretty much all the others have gone extinct or turned into focus-grouped horseshit, barely echoes of what made them so appealing originally.

And to be honest, CD hasn't done so well by Tomb Raider imo. The thing is, and this is probably my own damn fault, but I fell for it... the reboot. Loved the concept art, really liked the very first PR. Got hyped. And then they made a gory Uncharted.

Stings a bit, but I should have anticipated it. Still I cannot support the dev for this new direction, even if it was probably inevitable.

About 5 minutes to unpack here, i7-3770k and 12g of ram.

Aaaaand we're done. See you on the other side ladies and gentlemen.

I'm pretending to be sharing your pain right now by spending all evening downloading all 12 gigs of Vanquish on PSN.

Gonna play through this again until TR shows up from Gamefly.

Mate when it is all said and done (and I've said a lot too) it isn't really a new direction. I really do think it is just underworld (with no swimming) .... but actually done well.

Its still not the tomb raider game I want...but it is well put together and fun to play. I'll take that these days over their past efforts.

A lot of the comments on this page are spot on. It isn't quite an Uncharted clone, but it is certainly more Uncharted than anything else. Things just keep flitting along, nothing slows you down for more than 15 seconds on the way to the next setpiece. The platforming mechanics are a good deal tighter that UC, but the lack of any real challenge (so far anyway) is definitely more UC than classic TR. It's enjoyable, but yeah has that UC "hollowness."

Tonally, it is obviously much darker than Uncharted. The island does evoke RE4 level creepiness at times.

Unfortunately all of that comes to halt when Lara runs into other characters. The character dialog is bizarrely breezy and out of place, like everyone is oblivious to what they're going through, and just had the misfortune of landing at a poorly maintained beach resort.

Is there any solution to all this damn crashing for Nvidia?

Otherwise, I am in love with this game. Something about her fragility and the 1000-esque ways to die makes me feel like I just lost someone special.

I haven't played yet but it seems like tessellation and the hair effects are responsible for a lot of the nvidia problems. Turn them off and try playing.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
Found this one and it has button prompts to confirm which one is 360 and which one is PS3, which CVG comparison did not - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ULoDY3uoeI8

This is a very interesting video, this is the exact opposite of the CVG video. The PS3 version looks a bit washed out here and the 360 version has darker contrasts (which is what normally happens in multiplatform games).

See that was the whole problem. They made 3 great games in Legend, Anniversary, and Underworld and people didn't put their money where their mouth is. I am beyond pumped for this new direction, and I am a huge fan of all the TR games.

Fuck all you people getting to play it early and at midnight and shit. I have to race over to EB at 10 to pick up my copy and then I'm in class all day.
