Adam Orth no longer with Microsoft

That was unfortunate. But the tweets are pretty stupid and he has to deal with the consequences of anything he did. Hope he finds another job (and not create a PR disaster for the company) soon, for the sake of him and his family.
This about how I feel. I hope he can learn from this and not make the same mistakes again in the future.

This whole debacle ain't got nothin on our old boy Paul Christoforo...

Loved all the schadenfreude from this.

I think the real issue is that when it is known that you work for someone, you represent that employer at all times.
When I was doing console tech support during the MySpace era - before FB and Twitter were popular - they made it clear we didn't discuss anything about our job on public forums, sites, etc. at least not without approval. Doing so meant termination and maybe worse. While those in tech support are on the lowest end, it's obvious from this incident that even higher up's are not immune. It goes without saying it sucks what happened to Mr. Orth, but perhaps he should have used better judgement especially someone in his position and the fact he's already been in trouble before like this.

Really didn't want to see him fired. Was hoping that he'd keep his job.

This is real life. Losing a job is terrible.

well yeah, but if you cause massive damage to the company you work for they aren't at liberty to keep you employed. if you work for something that has visibility, you can't presume that you'll keep your job if you act like an asshole towards your clientele online.

he's been pushed out the door for things that were clearly his own fault, that I think most sensible people could see were actions that would likely cost him his job. i'm not sure how much pity the guy deserves.

I don't disagree with Stump, that doesn't excuse grave dancing, but unless you're someone who pities anyone who ever lost a job irrespective of why, there's no sense in feeling remotely sorry for him. now someone possibly more deserving of that job can fill it.

Shit like that will make twitter suck. I love twitter way more than facebook because people don't care what they say on there.

Yeah but all about Durango is still a secret. So if you work for MS you can't just spill such a secret and think it won't get you in troubles.

That is sad in so many ways.

Don't get why some are blaming this on an angry mob. The reality is: an employee used twitter to go on a rant about criticisms customers had. Instead of having a conversation about it, he was being snarky and sarcastic and told people to "deal with it".

If you remove the gamers being mad element, it is what it is: an employee telling his companies customer base to "deal with it" over something they might not like about an upcoming product. That's pretty stupid, and most companies would fire or reprimand an employee over this.

I'm actually kind of shocked that someone working for such a major company would so openly tell customers to deal with it, and expect to not get backlash.

It sucks the guy lost his job, but that picture in the OP where Orth is on monster.com and typed in Burger King made me laugh my ass off.

No he wasn't. Incredibly over-sensitive and bored internet dwellers got upset with him because he shared his opinions. All he did that was dumb was talk about a rumored feature of the yet-to-be-unveiled console. And again, he didn't deserve even a suspension for that. "Hey, don't do that again" and "Please make your games as awesome as possible" should've been the end of it.

pretty much this.

Yep.

They even told me when I got hired, if you associate yourself with us at all on Twitter or Facebook, then you better act right, because you can be fired if you act a fool.

Exact words.

My employers have a notice near the clock-in thingy that says the same thing.
Not those exact words, of course.

The Chrysler one is almost too good to be true.

I think that one was either a hack or someone with too much time on their hands, I don't know which.

Is he married or have kids or anything? If so, there's nothing to laugh about because they're gonna get affected by this, especially the kids. Idk if he does though

This is absolutely false.

It was on the front page as a top story on Yahoo.com

If you don't think this was a publicity nightmare for Microsoft, you have another thing coming.
Well I have absolutely nothing coming because I have no dog in this fight, but okay. You may notice in the bolded that I said "from what I remember", which isn't much as I paid very little attention to the whole situation as I thought it was rather pointless. If the story was hitting the front pages around the globe, then I apologize, I'm mistaken.

I don't really want to cover the same ground because at this stage in the game people have made up their minds. But all this hubbub erupted over a comment, "Deal with it". And a daft joke/comment, the implication of which was; if the area you live in has poor internet, then it's a crappy area. I just found it hard to believe that people could be so easily offended. And, for what it's worth -- not much -- I don't believe they were. Places like GAF attract a certain type of person, a lot of these people obviously feel very passionately about their hobby. But at the same time, I think many have a tendency to take things to heights they should never really reach.

The rest of the backlash was in regard to rumors of the always-online state of the next Xbox, which as I already said, had no real weight behind it. People were getting super bummed out over it all and completely overreacting instead of just waiting to see what Microsoft actually announce or put out. Perhaps worth noting, rumors have since come to light, that if true, make much of what people were complaining about a giant waste of time. If that turns out to be the case, what was the point in most of this?

I don't think anything the guy said -- be it his comments or hints towards the next Xbox -- warranted the reaction it garnered. I do think he would of done well to say nothing or just quit while he was ahead. And I understand why a company like Microsoft would be strict in regard to the things their staff might say via social media. But this whole thing had ended up being completely blown out of proportion, and unfortunately, a guy has lost his job over it. That makes some people happy, and they feel justice was served. That's fine. For me, the whole situation was much to do about nothing. Ultimately, I feel it had more to do with people's gripes about the possible features of a gaming console than anything that was actually said. And if we put things in to perspective, it is, at the end of the day, just a console.

That's just my opinion and I don't expect any of the aggrieved to agree with me. It is what it is.

Congratulations. The witch hunt was a succes.
Next, please someone either get Larry Hyrb out of the public eye or kill him. Him justifying over and over MS's dumb decisions this generation on his platform makes me cringe. Yeah, cause that 120GB hdd was totally cheap and everything... :| If you don't find it cheap, you know, that 20GB (12 or 13 GB usable) we gave you was more than enough!

Right now I'm just waiting for some guy to make a fortune by creating educational seminars about Facebook and Twitter and how not to use it. I have no idea how in this day and age people don't understand the idea of this shit being public.

Nope, it's not Aegies, it's gaf. Ever wonder why Che Chou, Adam Greenberg, Cliffyb, and a bunch of other people have said they don't like gaf?

I shouldn't be replying to a banned poster but I feel it should be noted that Che had a very nice thing going on here until he repeatedly lied about the Forza games during the pre launch marketing campaign. Essentially he was abusing his good standing at GAF to peddle PR bullshit.

Hopefully he lands on his feet somewhere, I hate to see anybody lose their job. Especially when it was over something as stupid as this.

For the people who keep lamenting about him losing his job, can I ask why?

Is it at no point okay to be let go if you screw up? It's about personal responsibility. This guy made his company look bad. It's a PR nightmare.

I don't even understand why people even LINK their place of employment in their Twitter profile.

This is why I've never posted any meaningful opinions on public social networks, or most anywhere online for that matter. Everyone is always listening.

Stinks for him. Hope he finds employment elsewhere, and keeps a lower profile for his own sake.

Maybe it is because the average person fucks up quite a lot and some people think that, generally speaking it is a good idea to cut them some slack.

Not my personal opinion on the situation, I don't have one but I can understand the argument.

I don't understand how anyone here can feel bad about him losing his job, I mean sure someone losing his job isn't something to laugh about but can anyone think of a more bone headed twitter gaffe than Adam Orth's? Not only did he unofficially confirmed a key feature to the 720, how many of you guys here would not fire your employee if he answered your customer's complains with a "deal with it"? Think Microsoft should be asking more about why he got given the title of creative director in the first place than why he shouldn't be fired.

Except this isn't just some "fuck up", Adam Orth could have very well killed the 720 before it's even officially announced.

This wound is self inflicted as far as I am concerned. I have long lost the ability to feel sympathy for these grown men and women torpedoing their careers on Facebook/Twitter. There has been enough time, and enough examples set prior to 2013, to excuse these numbskulls who just don't seem to understand this stuff.

The fact that he went with the "Deal with it" crap in such a dismissive and condescending manner is really just poetic, because everyone will rush to quote him with that exact same phrase in return as HE endures something uncomfortable. Congratulations to him, he got the attention he was seeking. Its a little late now to be disappointed that the attention turned out to be a bad thing.

Sorry, I'm just fresh out of tears for the people that do this.

This is just another case of people who don't understand that the internet is a public place and you aren't exempt from what you say on Twitter or Facebook or anywhere.

If you want to joke with friends about not living somewhere because it doesn't have internet, do it in a bar, or over the phone, or in an e-mail, or whatever. Somewhere private where the jokes stay between you and your friends. But if you're gonna act like a douchebag (whether you're a douchebag or joking like a douchebag) for all your followers to see, it's just like being a crazy celebrity giving a drunk racist rant for the paparazzi that ruins their careers.

Everyone's allowed opinions. Everyone's allowed to be a dumbass. But if you're a dumbass in public, you better believe it's going to hurt your standing.

Absoutely. When you're 10 years old. This man is a working professional. He should have known better. If he didn't, welp. Hard lesson to learn!

Anthony Weiner tweeting pictures of his junk is a personal favorite of mine.

And Adam Orth could not have killed the 720, that's some serious exaggeration.

My Facebook and Twitter don't say what my job is or who I work for.

This lets me be a dick on the internet without fear of losing my job.

If I were too dumb to do this it would be my own fault.
