What if Sony does the same?

Does the PlayStation 4 always need to be connected to the internet, I asked?

"You can play offline, but you may want to keep it connected," he suggested. "The system has the low-power mode - I don't know the official term - that the main system is shut down but the subsystem is awake. Downloading or updating or you can wake it up using either the tablet, smartphone or PS Vita."

Are all of those things optional, though? For people who have broadband data limits, for example? They can customise everything?

"Oh yes, yes, you can go offline totally. Social is big for us, but we understand there are some people who are anti-social! So if you don't want to connect to anyone else, you can do that."

I just found my 26 year old NES in the attic along with 50 games. Collecting NES carts I missed out on after going into the 16-bit era has been a lot of fun, as is playing them.

No DRM, no online required.

That and my 3DS....I'm pretty much good to go. My five year old and I have been having fun playing Contra together. :p

Steam is always online, so is Origin and I doubt you will find used PC games anywhere (hint once a CD key is used, you can't resell it)

this is why all this anti used games and always online stuff doesn't bother me one bit. I have been using Steam since the day Half Life 2 launched

Nope.

No. EA, Activision, Rockstar, Square Enix etc can get fucked.

And I can just cherry pick the publishers that don't do it.

I understand where you're coming from but publishers usually fall on the side of being greedy so good luck with that.

I'm probably quitting console gaming if Sony follows Microsoft's lead. I wasn't particularly excited about next-gen in the first place, but the hot garbage that has been the Wii U, and now the Xbox One, have actually made me consider jumping ship.

The fact that Sony seems to care about other countries is comforting in terms of the always on stuff.....Also there were tons of rumors (some of which have been proven true IIRC) about the Xbox doing these things but none really on the PS4...so there is hope...even if that got fucked a bit lately.

But I really wish someone would get in contact and at least ask...canned response or not.

Hey...game journalists...help us out and actually ask Sony if they are gonna require fees or always online. I don't care if we get PR speak back...just ask.

What if Sega releases a new Dreamcast? What if someone releases the Jaguar 2?
The 4DO? Why are we doing hypotehticals?

Fair question. Probably because there were simply no rumors about it.

I remember some statement, but can not recall where I read it.

But what if devs go Xbone exclusive because there is more profit without used game sales? (Not that I think it will happen)

bro listen, back in February I lost my internet connection for like three weeks. I couldn't even log into steam in offline mode! I don't remember exactly what, but it was asking me to log in without an internet connection. I couldn't install Chronicles of riddick or mirror's edge without an internet connection....I was bored out of my mind!

if both of those consoles have the same strict policies, I will contemplate a Wii U purchase only.
I lived Nintendo only all the way up until 2006... when i bought a 360. it broke and i got a ps3.

I can live nintendo only again if i need to. (+steam)

That is all I am saying; someone just ask. MS is getting raked over the coals so let's find out more about the PS4.

If Sony takes a similar stance on used games/DRM, then my saved $1000 will pay for a nice PC.

Which has a similar stance on used games/DRM... Also, you have to be kidding yourself if you think the PS4 will cost $1000

I just dont understand some people.

The combined cost of an Xbox One and a PS4 will probably be around $1000 once you factor in games, peripherals, etc. Sorry that you don't actually understand.

Nintendo would be the last hope(again)

Go ahead, throw your vote away

If Sony does go through with this idea of paying fees to play used games, then I'm going to PC for my next-gen fix.

Though I'd hope that after all the backlash that Sony has seen MS take because of their decisions that they would think twice about adopting the same policies.

They denied always online.
One doesn't have to be online all the time either.

They did say you could go 'totally offline', but if one was being careful, we could argue about whether they were referring to social features and other online features vs ALL, forever - literally plugging out your cable for good.

If the machine can, truly, be kept 'totally offline', it doesn't necessarily preclude some kind of options for publishers around monetising second games on systems that are online, but it would by technical necessity likely be a less draconian and universal setup than is suggested on Xbox One. It would actually be no different from the current system on PS3 - there are options there for pubs for online DRM, but most devs are very shy about using it because it becomes their responsibility, in a world where they're competing with other content that isn't doing the same...

I guess we shall see.

If Sony doesnt allow the PS4 to play used games I will go Xbox One simply because of the controller preference.

I'll enjoy watching the GAF threads crying for the end of gaming.

Then I'll carry on not giving a fuck and keep playing my PC games.

Big publishers I can easily see that, smaller devs would want to build a reputation before setting everything on fire.

Or at least the possibility is there.

Was it ever even mentioned in any of the leaks if PS4 had any of this. I seriously don't remember cause there were tons of leaks for it on XBone yet I've never heard anything like that for PS4.

I'll criticize the heck out of it and not consider purchasing the PS4.

Wont be considering the Xbox One either way. Maybe Wii U? (& stick with my PC)

This is my fear regarding what Sony has mentioned, yes it's left up for the publisher and we can assume that EA will do it since they are removing online passes but just because they don't do it themselves does not mean it's ok

This kind of goes against what PS4 design philosophy of being simple. I think people are just looking to throw the PS4 under the bus of the Xbox one for no damn reason. Sony has never followed Microsoft ideas. Right now sony has microsoft on the robes with this issue why in gods name would they just follow the same path after this kind of backlash?

this show is not Breaking Bad why is it not Breaking Bad? it should be Breaking Bad dammit Breaking Bad
Sony is not crazy.

#Sane.

If Sony does the same, be forewarned that we are evolving into a world which shuns privacy, and treats it as a conspiracy.
The same way pagan women were treated like witches because they were independent, live isolated, private lives, and rendered men useless.
