I have to admit I'm starting to get pretty excited about this release despite myself and Naughty Dog's output this gen. Something just tells me this one is going to turn out alright, and it seems to be scratching a particular itch I didn't know I had at the moment.

Metascore predictions guys ?

For me 97. xP
Why does the community at large give Metacritic so much weight? I just took Experimental Psychology and when you're analyzing results and scores, stuff like means are probably the least accurate description of the overall results because a single outlier score can pull the entire mean one way or another and misrepresent the actual results.

Personally I don't give much mind to a number scores. A number is an arbitrary designation, a singular icon that somehow has to represent every flaw and every success in a game. And that's just utter impossible.

What does a score of 7 or 8 or 8.5 even mean? I mean just look at the response to the Edge score. A 10 has weight because perfect scores are rare. But a perfect score from OPM? Disregarding because so many games have been awarded 5/5. Same scores, different meanings. For this reason alone reviews that give the same score aren't comparable and that's not even considering the actual review.

What matters is the content of a review. Describing what worked, what didn't, why, how it could have been improved. Maybe those good points are subtle. Maybe what amounts to a major flaw for a reviewer is only minor for another. But how can a number score explain all that? It can't.

I agree with that. It is an only simply question :D

Isn't it cute when someone takes a college course and suddenly thinks they are an expert on the topic?

I'm not invalidating what you are saying, I just find it amusing.

I am a Psych major and did take a entire course involving analyzing statistical results, rankings, scores, etc.

So I'm definitely not an expert but I do I have some knowledge, at least about the validity of a mean.

But that's beside the point of my comment

i don't know if you saw this... but, damn...

I guess you could say that. I haven't really allowed myself to get too optimistic - despite me being a total Gustavo Santaolalla fanboy - because of my history with ND games this gen, which I felt were emblematic of the problems with modern AAA game design. And that's coming off me quite enjoying their PS2 and PS1 titles. But something about Last of Us says to me maybe they'll be returning to what I consider to be form. I've seen some positive signs.

The ability to turn off all the annoying hand holding shit in the options menu was the biggest sign they're serious about allowing a more hardcore experience if one so desires it. The one hit deaths from Clickers. The scarce ammo and the potentially strategic A.I. I don't know, if it all comes together I think I will be back on board for Naughty Dog... at least for this series, anyway. Not sure I want another Uncharted ever, however :p

Describe dat itch

Feels like syphilis.

92.

Just because that's what Journey and Uncharted 3 ended up with.

I am a Psych major and did take a entire course involving analyzing statistical results, rankings, scores, etc.

It was a completely reasonable post, I was just being a dick.

Don't worry about it.

I don't hate Metacritc. I understand the convenience of a quick single score to see if a game is good or not. But I just think that people put way too much emphasis on a score and not the content of the reviews that make up the score, for the reasons you saw in my post

i dont play these kinds of games, but damn... all this media so far making me want to spend money.

That is seriously one of the most effective commercials I've ever seen for a game. And for once, i don't think it's off in tone either.

that commercial man, im not an impatient person but the wait for this game and man of steel is making these days go slow as fuck!

I don't think anyone can demonstrably tell you the difference between a 95 and a 94 game on MetaCritic, but as you said it's a useful and convenient reference to get a general idea of how good a game is.

I think it would be more useful if they disregarded the outliers that sway a score one way or another. A single 100 or a single 60 can really affect where a game stands.

I'll give you an example, Fallout New Vegas ended up with an 84 on MC. The publisher promised them a payment bonus if the game received a 85 or above on MetaCritic.

So meanwhile, everything is going fine, they are at an 87 or so and all the sudden some asshole from Armchair Empire gives them a 65 and boom, smacks it back to an 84. No bonus was received for everyone at Obsidian.

Sucks right? I guess you could place the blame on the publisher for even implementing such a ridiculous system in the first place, but it really isn't up to the developer.

IF the game is good, I really hope marketing of that calibre is rewarded. It'd really send the wrong message if even that couldn't break through.
I'm sure the game will sell well
Plenty of hype
I might bite a week after release if mp is any good
If not I'll just rent

I think the game will sell about as well as one could expect for a new IP.

Maybe 4 million units on lifetime sales. Enough for a sequel to be made if they decided to go that route.
