Polygon: Xbox One policy "gross, despicable, greedy, pathetic, cowardly"

But derailing topics is the norm at GAF. Check any big thread's first page and last page. They usually have almost nothing in common. This is how GAF goes. I don't think that is a legitimate reason to ban people.

You know the saying "My bar, my rules"

You should probably re-read the TOS and take your questions to email.

Bish and the other mods/admins know a bit more about whats going on than they're willing to disclose. I trust their judgement.

I get that it is still very suspcios to have an MS email and defend the Xbone in here. But is it really ban-worthy? Do we really need this forum to become a hive mind in which we all agree that the Xbone is horrible? Isn't GAF all about the discussion and the conflict of opinions we have here?

People who don't work for Microsoft should be able to register with an email address that's not affiliated with MS, shouldn't they?

And nobody is getting banned solely for defending the Xbone.

That is the part I don't understand. How do we actually know that this is their job? Just because they are using a corp email that means nothing. I registered with my university email here and if started defending my university in some threads, that does not mean that I am doing it only because I study there. I am genuinely believing my points and defend them regardless of my affiliation with my university.

Whether or not they believe what they're saying is irrelevant. They should disclose their job and their conflict of interest and get a tag or whatever so you know who they're representing. They are not afforded anonymity because there is a potential for conflict of interest.

We have plenty of reps posting in threads here, and they've been a positive force.

Yup. Gaf is not as "open" as many other gaming forums. If you feel a burning desire to sift through shills from astroturfers, constant derails, spam and childish bickering, there are plenty of other places you can go to get that experience.

Your university isn't a company.

GAF frowns upon people advertising stuff generally, unless they ask for a permission beforehand. This is nothing new. So yeah, people posing as regular gamers but who are in fact paid to advertise product X will get the boot.

Is there any basis for banning those "shells"? I get that their opinions are biased but does that really warrant a ban? Are they getting banned because they just disagree with bish/us?

They're getting banned because they're paid to have those opinions.

All of the posters getting banned have a few things in common:

1. They're either newly registered, or have very few posts.
2. Most or all posts are defending/supporting a particular company.
3. They have a corporate e-mail for either said company, or a marketing firm that works for it.

I can assure you that we would still have plenty different opinions and lots of things to discuss even if every poster that was welcoming anti-consumer practices with open arms was banned from these boards.

Only if you weren't transparent.

.

Funnily, a lot of the industry folks who post here and are transparent about their employers spend more time discussing topics unrelated to their work. Whereas these viral marketers spend 95% of their time in Xbone threads, because they're not getting paid to make unrelated posts.

Yeah, I especially appreciate it when developers and community managers interact with us on Neogaf. It's nice to get a chance to talk to people about the games they make and share opinions. It adds a lot to our community in my opinion.

It's only when people hide that they're advertising for a company that people get upset; people don't like being lied to.

What Im getting is:

Defending MS + MS corp email = ban.
Nonsense. Frankie works for 343 and has never hidden his affiliation. He participates in numerous threads outside of Halo, defends policy when he sees fit and is completely open. We have many, many developers who participate in the forum without hiding who they are, and even more who haven't disclosed where they work, but don't participate in threads where their work is being discussed. That's how professionals act.

Common sense says that if there's a potential for conflict of interest, either recuse yourself from the conversation or make your affiliation known so we can parse your posts accordingly.

If you try to hide, eventually you'll be discovered.

Any more questions, feel free to take it to PM.

Holy crap. If this means he was what we all think he was, and that further implies tethering your Xbone to a cellphone to get around a bad home internet connection is an OFFICIAL rebuttal being told to be used to get around home ISP problems, then MS is will and truly f#&ed.

Yep, you can learn a lot about how Microsoft sees us (read: disrespects us) from their puppets here.

let me counter that question with another one : do you want this forum to decent to gamefaqs level?

because that is exactly what it will become if the mods don't ban them now .

And while yes .GAF is all about the discussion and everyone is allowed to have an opinnion here.
people who have viral marketing intentions are not tolerated on gaf so they get banned .

I've been perusing this thread with a bag of lightly salted and buttered popcorn for the past half and hour or so. Banning after banning has been observed with great gusto lol.

Primetime entertainment here folks. Great work bish, I'm almost tempted to see even more shills unwittingly reveal themselves for the banhammer.

Thank you for clarifying. I get it now.

On-topic: I really appreciate the media reaction to this hassle. I hope that MS reconsider what they are doing at this point. This must have been a rough ride for everybody.

Allowing the shills to actually participate in discussion makes me hesitant to have a discussion. I don't want to waste my breath.

Although I do admit it's fun to do betting pools on who the shills are.

Looking back, I'm starting to feel thankful to EA for being the first to introduce the "cloud gaming" marketing term on a large scale with Sim City, and fucking it up colossally. Marketing must hate that.

Thank you EA, for making your marketing ploy so transparent and easily proven that even the least critical gamer will look twice before buying it again.

Lol. The XBone is shaping up to be Sim City: The Console.

So... how do we differentiate astroturfers from fanboys? A forum without hardcore fanboys would be pretty boring, and it would be a shame to ban those poor souls.

It's usually pretty obvious when someone goes through the trouble of creating an account, doesn't post for 3 years, then suddenly appears aggressively posting about one subject.

agreed. There seems to be some kind of quota these people need to hit re: posts that's forcing them out of the weeds and right into traffic, where they swiftly get creamed by the ban-bus.

Can Sony survive in Japan with used game DRM?

Well IIRC Japan has no rental market, so used games are a huge thing. With you being able to do what you want on PS3, Vita, PSP, DS, 3DS, Wii and Wii U, Sony would probably struggle in a country where people will trade a game in within 2 days of buying it because they finished it!
