Xbone PR: the 60 Minute Family Plan Revelation

So was this actually confirmed or just speculation? I imagine it was probably the case but we will never fully know right now it is canned? There are other parties saying it was the full game right?

Perhaps it was 60 minutes but then changed to full game during the bad press of DRM and E3 and then fully scrapped when minds weren't changed further from that. Probably not being MS (and they didn't mention it) but either way it's gone now sooo

1 hour of unabridged gameplay which is saved is better than a restricted demo.
Maybe, but that's not what they told people. Everything pointed to this being full access to a shared library of games.

Guess leaving out the detail 'for one hour' wasn't considered that important.

Aside from the lols why did they end up canning this? This is actually a pretty smart way of selling games to people.

It would fly in the face of everything they've been saying.

"over-delivering on value"

If they would have announced this they would have been the laughing stock of the industry, they already are to an extent but to give up consumer rights for a 60 minute demo? GTFO MS.

This is amazing. Major Nelson went out of his way to pimp this as one of the huge benefits of the 24 hour DRM. Now it turns out it was a one hour demo program. lmao

This is the same company that screams to the heavens how amazing the cloud is, and then we find out titanfall uses it to make matchmaking a bit better.

I can't help but find this whole thing hilarious.

I want to hear from people who were touting the superiority of MS's policies over PS4 because of this family share plan which seems to be nothing more than PS+ full game trials (except someone you are in a circle with has to actually own the game).

There are some people who think Microsoft should just give out shit for free. Why people are disappointed about this is beyond me.
Microsoft exceeded expectations... in this being something with little to no value whatsoever. I at least thought it would be the ability to lend your library to one other person, who could play a different game from you concurrently.

This glorified demo/marketing scheme... I don't even.

I'm just laughing my ass off at people who thought they'd be able to split the cost of games between 10 people and all play different games simultaneously. People who talked about it being the #gamechanger that made all of the DRM and no real lending, unrestricted resale or gifting. The "this is the future" "get with the times" "this is worth it" people.

Just lol.

And the kicker is that even without all the DRM and restrictions they could still implement this scheme.

Go back to any interview, and you could read between their double talk. This also explains why they never explained it in detail beyond "shared library" and "10 family members."

There is no way it changed to a "full game." They would have screamed and made a giant hoopla if they did.

Because Sony does this without having people jump through hoops. It wasn't feature to tout as one of the great reasons to deal with the restrictions.

Not really. I have PS+ and I never use that feature because I don't want to download a whole game to play for one hour.

It's amazing that just now people are realizing that everything coming from Microsoft PR is complete and utter bullshit. This is after a generation of:

"The Xbox 360 is all about choice." (your only choice is overpriced HDs and wi-fi adapters)

"We have special technology in our hard drives, that's why they have a premium price." (GTFO)

"Just because HD DVD lost, doesn't mean Blu-Ray won." (my favorite)

"Things break." (Get fucked)

Wait, he also says this:

We were toying around with a limit on the number of times members could access the shared game (as to discourage gamers from simply beating the game by doing multiple playthroughs).

So it looks like after 60 minutes (max) was up, you could just 're-borrow' the game to keep playing, as long as they didn't have any limits on the number of times the game could be 'borrowed'.

Unbelievable. Games would have cost the same, but could not be used by multiple family members, shared with friends, or privately traded. And there was nothing at all to sweeten the deal besides being able to play your library anywhere without needig a disc!!!!!!!

If they announce this right after the no used game policy, it would be a train wreck on top of a train wreck. It would be huge fireball explosion after the train wreck. It would be a Michael Bay movie.

The last time they used the over-delivered line was in regards to their backwards compatibility efforts with the 360.

would you use the feature if you could stream it via Gaikai or only must download around 20% of the game to start it?

Technically, it is. Classic PR-speak.

Dude... you wouldn't!

You actually downloaded a car?

LOL.

I can't believe this 60 minute idea was hidden, if only because MS was still making it up and changing it as they went. Unbelievable. Now will people stop complaining that such a 'great' feature like Family Sharing is gone?

Hahaha, some of these are hilarious. Well, in a sad way.

There was never a way pubs were going to let this happen, AND let MS go around telling people "hey you can totally invite your friends and 10 people can use 1 copy!" Not surprising they tried to pull another fast one on us. Seems more and more likely they pulled back on DRM seeing as their number feature against the backlash was a half truth the whole time.

this is one of the worst gaming related things I've ever read. Ever, in 28 fucking years of playing videogames. I'm just speechless

That's the thing. I was one of those thinking it was the good version, because frankly, it was made to sound that way.

Ragging on people who were simply accepting what they were hearing isn't fair (not saying you were).

I'll still miss discless gaming though. That was my number one feature I was looking forward to.

So basically these mother fuckers touted and promoted a game sharing feature as a great addition to DRM

But failed, or should I say willfully misled the public into thinking it would be unfettered sharing, instead is was merely an hour demo. Lying by omission...or at least limited dissemination of the full truth.

Now granted this has been a feature of PS+ for a while.....but Sony never marketed this as "family sharing" and only possible because of DRM...

Well played you arrogant bastards.

You left out the one that bothered me second-most after "Things break.", their excuses for why they wouldn't include HDMI. Even when they replaced the mobo on my launch unit years after they added HDMI... still no HDMI. Yeah, the case didn't have a hole for it, so replace the back of it. Its a simple piece of cheap plastic, FFS. And they could have saved themselves the trouble of designing, manufacturing and stocking more mobo models.

Whoever came up with the family plan needs to get pimp slapped. I knew this feature was too good to be true. I'm glad they posted this info that way idiots will stop asking for the DMR to came back.

Also doesn't the ps3 already have something similar to this? MS "future" is Sonys present. MS really fucked up with the X1.

That's how I'm reading it too. That would be annoying as hell getting kicked out of the game to the marketplace every 30mins - 1hour, but you'd still be able to beat Call of Duty in 6-8 "sessions". They would have definitely put a limit on it, especially on games that are shorter.

Holy crap if true. Madness MS, madness! Truly no benefit to the proposed DRM, if these allegations are true. I was sorta looking forward to sharing my library with my family. Bullet dodged!

i don't get it? you can still download the game and that is discless gaming right? unless you are talking of buying a disk and then installing it just so you can get rid of disc which I would say is probably still going to happen but might be optional. we shall see.

I didn't see this coming at all.

I thought it would be play an hour then cut to the store with "We see you're enjoying Pootle's copy of Ryse. You've already downloaded the whole game, why not buy it? No? That's fine. Here's some Doritos and Mountain Dew ads and messages regarding our exciting upcoming titles and a showcase of new content from our media partners. Enjoy and we'll see you back here in another hour."

A you can loan it if you want to but no-one will last more than a couple of hours sort of thing.

But this... It's just demos with a compulsory full install. Utter madness. What did it even have to do with specifying 10 people? It would be easier to just make full game installs compulsory for all demos.

This seems really werid? Why even have an hour limit in the first place then - to get money from lazy people or the uninformed?

Yeah. I can get the discs really cheap, but still treat it like digital.

I'm assuming DD prices will be as ridiculous as they are today.

But to have the pricing of disc, with the convenience of digital would have been great.
