Sony unveils Xperia Z Ultra (6.4'', 1080p, Snapdragon 800)

I like the style, but the size is not very practical in daily life. My Note 2 ist just a little bit too large already, but this is really HUGE.

But I could imagine to use it at home, just not as a phone.

I still want it. All jokes aside.

But what US bands is it compatible with I wonder? SnapDragon 800 should be compatible with all GSM US radios but I know TMO and AT&T use some crazy bands for their 4G

Is this the phone that comin' to T-Mobil in the US? I got some weird message from them the other day about a new Xperia phone exclusive to them...

Yep, that's a tablet alright.

the thing is about the note 2 is Samsung at least had software that justified the big screen size. apart from a stock drawing app, what does this Xperia offer?

I like the idea that it works with any stylus, and the big plus ... works with a pencil or pen too LOL. In one video, they did show off some drawing app.

I have the Xperia Tablet Z and was looking at the Xperia Z as my next phone, but I might just be temped to go for this instead. I gots the man hands.

Would nee to hold one first though, at what point does having it against your head not look stupid.

If you're near Hammersmith you can try and blag your way into the press meetings today. I think they are open to the press for another hour. You just need ID or anything that shows you work for a phone/tech site/mag.

All that size and they couldn't be bothered to put a flash on there. I find LED flashes extremely useful, not just for photos, but as a geniuine flashlight replacement that's always with you. Shame.

Ha if I'm near Hammersmith, I'm on the Hogarth Roundabout broadcasting the bloody Tennis!

Can't get down to that though, apparently live sport is important, and I don't have a pass.

I don't get why they didn't put that pencil shit on the Tablet or the other phone though.

Yeah, I would have liked an LED on there to use as a torch. I really think they tried too hard to make it thin, would have preferred and extra mm on the thickness, a 3600mAh battery and LED flash as well as a slightly larger aperture lens.

You can probably use your press pass from work, they won't know any better!

The pencil uses a new type of technology, it's not commercially viable for tablet screens just yet. Expect it in next year's Tablet Z II though.

I'd love to, but I'm kind of responsible for Wimbledon being broadcast to a few planes and cruise ships right now :p It's a hard life.

I don't get why it wasn't on the 5" phone though? Is it THAT new?

Yes, it is very new tech. Wasn't ready in October when the Xperia Z was finalised for production.

It's funny how we started with huge Zach Morris cellphones then became obsessed with making them as small as possible, and now back to Zach Morris. Full circle

Fair enough.

Well I'll be keeping my eyes on this then. Love the tablet version so this is definitly in my wheelhouse. I'm not carrying the little thing around to make calls though, so if I feel like a dork with the phone against my head then I'll just get the 5"

Are you kidding me? 6.4"?!?!?!

I still think 4.3"-4.7" is optimal and going any higher is just too much. The device itself becomes more of a burden to keep in your pocket and the screen size doesn't actually add that much to the experience. I hate this trend...

I wouldn't mind seeing the iPhone increase a bit in size, but these 5"+ phones are just nuts.

lmaoooo I thought that commercial was a parody at first

Well I bought the Xperia Z tablet. At this rate I might as well just use it as a phone.

It looks gorgeous, but what is the differentiating factor with other smaller smartphones other than the screen size? With the Note II, it had a Wacom stylus. This one doesn't come with a stylus. Using a pencil doesn't appeal to me because I wouldn't want to scratch my screen. Other than no uniqueness factor, it really is a nice looking device with awesome specs. Too big for me though.

Edit: it's interesting that Sony's describing it as "waterproof" whereas with the Xperia Z it was only "water resistant". Could open them up for some lawsuits. :p

Too big for my slim jean/trouser pockets unfortunately. And for my small hands.

EDIT: Actually In that photo shot with the Galaxy Note 2, looks quite comparable. Hmm.

EDIT: Shit, that was a Galaxy Mega in the picture. Damn its big..

That thing is huggeee but so so sexy. Not the kind of thing i want in my life, but it looks pretty great. Good to see Sony pushing in these areas.

This will soon happen, but with mobile phones.

when you think about it its quite weird .

first they spend years trying to make phone hardware as small as possible and now we seem to be going back in reverse.

We went from this:

to this:

oppo-thinnest-mobile.png

And now we go back to bigger ?

To be fair, the Z Ultra is now the world's thinnest smartphone. :p

I want it. Only if this thing will last longer than my ZL though. I cant go back to something the size of an iPhone 4. 6.4 may be a bit too big to text on one hand with though.

nice specs! Finally a great screen!

paid little attention to the 6.44" size until i saw it besides the XZ....thats one big boy! I dont know if Sony wants to compete with the Note market or the iPad mini market. XZU looks too large/small for either one. They could be going after the Nexus7 market, but i doubt this will be cheap.

I think making it 5.6-6.0" with that thin form factor would be better.
Note market is growing and Sony should go after that.

These phone sizes are getting so fucking stupid.

I want to get a fancy new phone, but I am not lugging around that monstrosity.

It is really a shame that this doesn't have a LED on the back. I use the torch/flashlight function quite a bit on my phone.

I still want this phone though, it would be nice to be able to convert to one device for phone/tablet. I just wish phones weren't so damn expensive off contract compared to tablets. It would be ridiculous me using this every day (especially for phone calls), but I think I only use maybe 60 minutes each month for voice.

6.4" would take a lot to getting used to, but I'm sure I could adapt pretty quickly. It really should be 6" or under though.
