GT6 Demo Tuesday 2nd July

You're in very rare company then. I'm struggling to find any news, articles or PR that doesn't refer to this as a GT6 Demo.

They can call it whatever you want, the purpose of the GT Academy is no secret. Are you gonna call GT Academy 2014 a post-release demo? Or a demo for GT7?

The events of the trials run on a pre-determined date, it's why this came out now. If it really were a demo you wouldn't be getting it 4 months before release.

GT Academy has always looked quite different to the final game IMO.

However, after watching ISR's quick look at GT6 @ E3, even that is noticeably less polished then expected..

Still, as long as we can get a stable frame rate out of it, anything else will just be a bonus, it'll occupy a good few tens of hours like any other racing game..

I'm not the one calling it a demo - Sony is, playstation is, GTPlanet is, and the official gran-turismo sites are. Its not my personal made-up terminology - it's a demo, its being marketed as a demo, and people are evaluating both the positives and negatives of it. And if the negatives I bring up are waved away because this isn't representative, then I'd hope those same standards are applied to the positives as well.

I think GT fans have gotten used to lowered expectations.

Got to max posts I think.

Would I be banned if I started another one? Not to take part in it, but just to get the flamewar out of places like this...

I have a logitech wheel, so Forza could be the best game that has been or will ever be created and it would be totally irrelevant to me, it's so tiring seeing people shit-talking the same crap in every GT thread.

It's not that the 360 is more powerful, it's that PD has become incompetent. Forza is just better... there's no way around it.

It's crazy how mismanaged they have been since GT4.

I've played the Forza 4 demo (with the beautiful scenery) right after playing the GT 6 demo. And oh boy... the difference between these games are huge.
Forza 4 physics feels a lot better to me, has a much better IQ, locked framerate at 60 fps (even in in-car view), better sense of speed and the audio destroys GT on PS3. Everything just feels more "alive".
.
I don't why this is but the GT's on PSX and PS2 felt more polished and exciting than all the GT's on PS3. GT on PS3 feels very dated now to me.
Turn 10 has surpassed Polyphony this generation and Forza 5 looks the best of all next-gen racers I've seen so far.

I do respect the hardcore GT fanbase, some of you guys are (still) really passionate about this franchise.
I just hope that Gran Turismo 7 on PS4 will be a completely fresh experience, step your game up Polyphony! There will be some serious competition out there.

Nah, if anyone is going to start one it'll be bishoptl.

Someone should PM him the situation.

This is definitely not a demo by the modern interpretation of the word. Today's demos are usually a slice of gold code. Years ago demos often were more like what we call betas today, and you occasionally still see the word demo applied in that old school way. This is one of those times.

I'm not saying that they won't have problems come launch. If that's the case, then that would be "divorce" to GT:A's "trouble in paradise". Not looking good, but you can't say for sure what'll happen.

Will post more after getting back from the gym, but the first impressions are good.

Time trials are addictive as crack.

New physics are good, although it did not fixed some exploits like rotating the car underbraking kind of like doing a controlled Scandinavian flick.

BUT

The frame rate is horrible.

I mean, downright absurd. I drive from the outside view and it hurts my eyes because it keeps chugging and stuttering all the time.

Why Kaz, why?

I know it's WIP, but the academy is out now.

Still have to try the GTR to see how it feels.

Switch to 720p mode?

Great job with pics Wax (as always, God bless CFW) - could you do some Silverstone grabs, especially with unlocked GT3? Is it possible to grab the same spots on track under different lightning (time of day) conditions?

Thanx in advance!

Screen capture is only available with CFW 3.55 which has no PSN access, so no screens of the Academy trials.

You can have some more Autumn Ring shots though:

Weird thing happened to me yesterday, I was trying to check out the leaderboards for the Silverstone full lap time trial, as I moved the cursor to the right side, I quickly pressed select to go top of the leaderboards and with it not having loaded the players and times yet I pressed X on that small white box thing, and it loaded up Silverstone with ARCADE SINGLE RACE at the top and 3 options at the bottom, RACE, OPTIONS and EXIT. When I select options nothing happens, same goes for race..only exit works.

Anyone had this happen to them?

I feel like I've been lied to.

Amazing trailer, and yet the game looks sub PS3 to PS2 levels in the demo.
All GT5 trailers were also done this way, using game assets but prerendered to look crisper and smoother.

They never say 'this is gameplay' at the beginning, so you haven't been lied to at all. Frankly if you think the PS3 is capable of the visual fidelity of any GT5 or GT6 trailer, you are sorely mistaken - even the PS4 would struggle to achieve the image quality of a prerendered trailer like that.

I like the new physics model but the rest of it seems a little too similar to the sluggish UI stuff I hated in GT5. Probably going to skip GT6 unless I hear they've improved that stuff.

Damn, someone just got 2:16!! Crazy lap. I can easily gold each individual section, but I can't gold the whole track yet (very close). It's difficult for me to remember all the segments as a whole. Never been a big fan of Silverstone.

On a side note, I feel like I'm sliding out a lot more than with GT5. Sense of speed is greatly improved. At least when you play with all assists off in simulation mode, power steering off. When you nail a segment at break neck speeds and the car is literally teetering on an edge a few mm's away from spinning out, it's a great feeling. Lots of room for finesse. Been shaving hundredth or thousandth's of a second of laps consistently.

Used the controller for a quick few laps and eurgh, don't want to play this game without a wheel.

Side note, this shot looks amazing. Almost life like.

I don't understand GT's obsession with clinical sterilization. The game has no personality, no life to it and the tracks are boring as shit:

FM4_PreviewTour_2.jpg

I'd love for a track like that in the GT series. Environments still look PS2 quality in GT6, while car models are clearly a step ahead.

Oh well, Xbone it is for driving simulators.

Watch Matterhorn? Looks pretty neat to me. GT5 does look very clinical, but I think the lighting style has a lot to do with that.

I also don't think Polyphony did a great job with the PS3. They obvious chose to pump detail into the cars to the neglect of the tracks (and to such detail that they couldn't make enough premium cars), and the game still isn't locked 60 fps even after patching.

Biggest mistake PD made early on imo was targeting pseudo 1080p instead of just 720p. 1080p is just too much for the PS3, especially at 60fps. It's astonishing they're getting as much as they are out of the system.

That's a good point. It tells you how much Kaz gives a shit about framerate. Someone who did would have dropped it to 720p or lower to lock it at 60 FPS.

The one thing I don't really understand is the sound...is there a technical reason that could be preventing them from improving things? Is it lack of memory? Other than sheer...like, laziness/lack of time, I don't understand.

I don't think we'll ever know the real answer. In fact, that's the second thing Kaz doesn't care about. Part of me just wants to believe they just fubared the sound capture or shaped it to sounds they thought were acceptable.

The game does not look very good.. Forza 5 or whatever that is going on XBONE looks amazing compared to it. The suspension however is sweet.

Yeah I wish Matterhorn was the demo track. I might be singing a different tune at the moment. *Shrug*

The guy in the video makes a good point though, the tarmac is too "perfect"in terms of no wear or tear.

You... need help.

Says the guy with the Gran Turismo avatar.

Sound is the new damage. It´s going to get fixed. It´s just standing out for being so bad in a otherwise great game. They might not reach what we expect, but there´s no way the cars keep sounding like shit after so many requests.

They did started to listen to complains now.

Actually driving feels a bit easier. Before the 370z had a tendency to snap out with no reason, now the car tells you when it´s reaching it´s limit. Also, it´s a shame there´s no feedback on the wheel to tell when your tires are losing grip. It´s a pain on those high speed sweepers in 3rd and 4th, because you need to pay attention to that.

Switch to 720p mode?

Thanks, i´ll try that to see if it helps.

Sounds was a problem long before people were bitching about damage, and it is still a problem. It is not the new damage, it is the longest standing problem with the series.

I played a bit last night. It doesn't offer much over gt5 IMO. I've always loved gt in the past but gt6 will be my last one. If it was going to ps4 I wouldn't buy it at all. (This is my last console gen #old).

My biggest takeaway from the demo is the suspension and physics in general.

God damn it feels so much better. I think the environments got a slight bump, but I definitely saw frame rate drops a few times. I assume it's because the demo is janky.

Well Forza 5 better look better than a game running on a 7 years old console or Turn 10 would be the laughing stock of developers.

What did you expect?

I played the "demo" for a bit and decided to just wait till GT6 is officially out. It looks and sounds terrible, my wife thought I was playing a PS2 game at first. One thing I did like was the handling though :)

I know its not a true demo but playing this calmed my hype down for GT6 just a tad,i guess I just expected more.....maybe I was expecting too much. Ill just wait till the retail copy is in my hands instead.

i just played the first time trial a whole bunch of rounds and managed to land on 36.109

that fuckiing 35 mark is killing me

help

how on earth have people actually gotten below 35 fuck me

That first turn should be taken in very high 3rd gear.... like you only shift down to third gear for a split second before shifting up again.

So, what kind of times are you guys doing on the full lap?
I just did a 2:19:213, really happy with that, but I think I could find another 5 tenths if I put a perfect lap together.

It's the simulation of the sound that is the problem not the actual sound recordings. They are working on rebuilding it but no idea if it will come for GT6.

The best thing about this demo is that the GTR is no longer a baby car. You can't just push gas without any consequences... i love it.

720p definitely helped. It's a shame they didn't locked down on that resolution. Why on earth they would release something that ugly to the public i'll never know. Now everyone will think about switching resolutions, they will just think the game is broken.
