Yakuza 1&2 HD Wii U fails to enter top 50 for first week in Japan

I have no idea why they thought this would sell anything.

It's a late port of an HD remake of games that are coming on 10 years old and they are charging damn near $50 for it.

The Ryu ga Gotoku brand is firmly associated with PlayStation. It's extremely unlikely that there were people who refused to own a PlayStation 2 or PlayStation 3, own a Wii U, and were still interested in playing these games.

It was an experiment to see if the Yakuza franchise can sell on WiiU.
They wanted to see if there are some WiiU owners who are interested in the game but do not own a Ps3. If this would have been the case it would have made sense to release future installments on Ps3/4 and WiiU.
Turns out that everybody who wants to play the games already played them on Ps3.
So it doesn't make sense to release future installments on WiiU because the people who would buy it on WiiU would've bought it on Ps3 anyways if there wasn't a WiiU version. So a WiiU version wouldn't expand the market but only divide the existing market into two parts - one on Ps3 and one on WiiU.
Thats the reason why many western developers aren't supporting the WiiU.
The WiiU owners who are interested in their games buy it for other plattforms if there isn't a WiiU version. So why even bother with a WiiU version?

I suppose this negates the idea that Tales sells better on Nintendo platforms by virtue of them being Nintendo platforms. I would imagine that Symphonia 2 did pretty well the Wii (on par with Vesperia) because it was a sequel to the best selling game in the series by close to a factor of 5 (in North America).

Poor Wii U.

Also, where did the heatwave/ hot week thing come from?

in the media create sales thread during a thread about wii u sales someone tried to discuss wii u sales before people were finished laughing at them and it went on to become the most forced meme i've seen on here

That's not really what happened.

In the media create sales thread a known fanboy wrote a stupid post trying to justify the lack of WiiU sales that instantly became a classic (like the "I'm an expert" post). It's only forced to you because it's something related to your beloved Nintendo.

This is the post:

Lol at the revisionism of what happened

I still fail to understand how selling 60k of something can not make a translation profitable, while at the same time being enough to fund entire games.
It's all about scale, right? If a publisher makes $20-30 revenue per copy sold at $60, then you're looking at a high end of around 2 million in revenue. For large corporations, that has to pay salaries and expenses of the tens of people working on it, marketing, advertising, etc. it all adds up.

A game like Fez might be funded for that much because it used less advertising and only had two people working on it with minimal overhead.

I know as outsiders it can be hard for us to comprehend the amount of money games cost to make, but this brings flashbacks of that embarrassing thread on Skullgirls' cost.

i don't think it's revisionism. threads are hot when they discuss something where people have conflicting interests. they need to sizzle down before you can talk about stuff like that and someone made the mistake of getting in early.

the forced part is just how i interpret it. i don't even know what people mean when they say it because it's being used for literally everything, not even related to nintendo stuff

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.

It was patently ridiculous spin. Thats why its become a meme. Not seeing that is forcing things in the opposite direction really. The loser of the generation always has classics plied from their respective forces, and this just happens to be one of them. I mean the added 'Pokemon Centres are even empty' side of it just sealed the deal putting it up there with 'shot in the foot/japanese honour expert'.

The notion of lower sales being caused by heatwave is so ridiculous it deserves all the exposure.

Getting in early? It was one of the most desperate excuses ive ever seen and there have been bad ones on gaf, and yes you are letting your bias cloud how ridiculous that was. It waas ridiculous enough that it deserves to be a meme even if you think people are hurting feelings.

Poor Wii U.

Also, where did the heatwave/ hot week thing come from?

I brought up anecdotal statement about how places in Japan were dead that weekend due to the heatwave, including places like the Pokémon Center which is very rarely empty and that it may have had an effect on sales. Then, everyone here took it to extremes

This is really what it comes down to. Unless there's something that makes the Wii U version really stand out, and it comes out at the same time or earlier than other platforms, what's the point?

Yeah, claiming pikmin didn't sell because of a heatwave isn't forced. At all.

Why would they even release this on the Wii U anyways? I wish we knew how many sells were needed to break even for every new game and ports.

It was also really hot to the level of heat wave in Japan last week, and it came out in a holiday weekend where people were not in the streets. Even the Pokémon Centers were fairly empty and that seldom happens.

This has an effect on sales. I'm not saying this to spin but as an explanation

Basically i know im spouting completely illogical bullshit but dont attack me for it....., but you can believe what you want its not going away.

well the dude even put a disclaimer on there so people wouldn't take it the wrong way and people took it the wrong way anyways.

"I'm not trying to spin, but heres some crazy spin" is, forgive semi-godwins law, the same sort of lead up behind "now I'm not racist but..." anecdotes. The person already knows theyre treading on thin ice, but here it comes regardless.

It's not illogical. It makes actual sense. Anyone who is in the retail business can tell you that for specific kinds of retailers, business drops in one weather, and increases in another.

I was not using it to explain everything, I said it would have had an effect on it.

As I said, taking it to extremes

Lol, dude has a name, but keep calling him Celebi, makes me chuckle out loud. Anyway on topic , gawd dayum, some experiment lol.

i can't even figure out what they were trying to experiment with. the wii u fanbases love for older titles? how receptive wii u owners are to yakuza titles? how new markets will react to recently re-released older titles on other platforms? there are so many different ways to look at this title that i don't even know what they could be going for,

Yeah so while everything else didnt drop you used a heatwave to explain wiiu not rising as high. That makes completely logical sense....oh wait it doesnt. It was pure damage control at least own up to it

Stop it!

The sales of the most systems increased in the same week - without any big releases.

In your defence, I saw an awful lot of people saying the same thing in a recent PAL thread, totally straight faced.

Here's how to rigorously prove your point:
- Look at other releases and games that week to see how their sales were impacted. If they were not similarly impacted, the heat wave didn't impact Pikmin 3.
- Identify that it was actually a heat wave, and not just an ordinary hot period common in Japan in the summer.
- Look at other heat waves and show how they had a similar effect.
- Show that Pikmin 3 had a better-than-expected second and third week (since the heat wave didn't lower sales, it displaced them until after the heat wave).

I'm pretty sure they were all jokes...

you really can't believe that weather has no effect on sales, right? it's a really common thing. it's extremely noticeable where in FL where i live. retailers can set employee hours based on weather. whether or not that had an effect is one thing (and people had a good argument as to why it didn't comparatively), but it isn't like that thinking is totally out of the norm.

This was never a major effort to start with it and it's being treated like was a major AAA effort in this thread judging for the number of replies, c'mon. Ah... it's a third-party game (a mature one) that bombed on Wii U... ok.

maybe you should try actually reading the replies, peoples expectations were at best 10k, do you think that's AAA sales? it pretty much sold an order of magnitude less than the tiniest of expectations

Of course major weather events affect sales. Anyone with eyes could have looked at that chart that week and shown it was nonsense.

So why did every thing else do their regular numbers(iirc)? Why was pikman 3 the only game effected by the heatwave? Why didn't 3ds sale less(iirc)?

What a waste of time that "experiment" was. Sega, stop being dolts and actually do people a favour by releasing the HD collection and Y5 in the West instead of releasing Yakuza games on platforms where they won't sell shit.

Well it was a port of a hd collection alread released and most people who own a wii u own a ps3 more than likely so its obvious it was a bad choice of what they ported
