AMD: PlayStation 4 supports hUMA, Xbox One does not

PS4 is getting a new mascot.

Does the Xbox One have any hardware advantages or is this a completely one sided fight?

You could probably conjure up some algorithms with which the super low latency esram on the Xbox give it an edge over the PS4, but it's largely pretty one sided. The PS4 is much more clearly designed as a games first console than the Xbox is.

So when will we actually SEE all these graphical advantages the PS4 has? I keep hearing that the console is noticeably more powerful, and yet when looking at the games, not ONE has looked graphically impossible to mimic on the competitor's console. "Just wait a couple years and the differences will show themselves." If the graphical hardware differences are so drastic, why is it taking several years to finally see differences? I feel like Sony has the best engineered (and more powerful) console, but for some reason they simply REFUSE to show it. SHOW me why you have the most powerful console Sony. SHOW me that your console is capable of things the competition can only dream of doing.

Seriously man, just wait for the multiplatform comparisons if you really want to see the differences. Maybe they'll be big, maybe they won't. Should be interesting.

Just wait for ND, SSM and Polyphony Digital to release flagship title.

Think it was only 60 FPS that was confirmed for sure. Can't seem to find anything other than random people saying it's going to be in 1080p and EA saying once that it could be possible.

The XB1 has a chip (or it's part of the OS?) that can overlay a 1080p HUD/UI on a 720p rendered game footage. Dunno if PS4 has that but it's a nifty feature.

kinect, maybe some of the online stuff, possibly higher likelihood of dedicated servers. might count the controller rumble feature, but sony has their own unique controller features. that's about it.

Completely one sided in the area that matter.

The dedicated audio silicon in the One is meant to be advanced, but I don't know how it compares to the PS4 or much about it, other than the VGLeaks info from earlier in the year. Kinect is clearly more advanced than the PS4 camera, if peripherals count.

As far as the rest goes, the One is either equal to the PS4 (CPU) or utterly destroyed by it (GPU, RAM, hUMA, GPGPU etc).

I wanted to dominate the living room. Then I took an ESRAM in the knee.
To summarize the evidence so far: we have an article from a respected source, echoing Senior Product Marketing Manager Marc Diana in saying that PS4 implements their hUMA architecture while the XB1 does not. This is followed by the deduction that PS4 will have a significant performance boost over XB1 because of that. It remains unclear what the AMD representative said verbatim. We can only say that c't is as reputable as it gets in the space of German IT publications; that does not make them infallible, of course.

In addition, Sony is part of the HSA consortium while Microsoft is not. Of course, we don't know the political implications of such a membership which may play a significant role along purely technological reasons.

Technology-wise, we can say with certainty that PS4 indeed is a hUMA architecture. Everything we have heard since the release from official sources, especially PS4's Onion/Garlic memory bus layout and the volatile tag on cache lines, confirms that. In addition, Sony has actually advertised this fact quite aggressively, beginning with the Havok GPGPU demo at the PS4 reveal.

We don't know much what the Xbox One does beyond what the leaked documents tell us. And those are ambiguous and not very detailed. At first, it sounds unexpected for it to not support hUMA. Microsoft certainly has implemented a more custom memory system than Sony to manage its DDR3/ESRAM layout, including its DMEs. There is no clear indication about which features of a hUMA architecture might be lacking. Maybe not all memory clients and pools are cache-coherent system wide. The GPU does seem to have to flush its caches when it synchronizes with other clients. However, the article on vgleaks is neither very detailed nor clear, nor do we know if its author recited the original sources correctly. So the relationship between a hUMA feature set and the XB1 is unclear.

Politics-wise, AMD certainly wants to push hUMA since it is part of its own upcoming end-customer products. This would be reason alone to champion the PS4 independent of what the XB1 does, since AMD won't profit from what Microsoft has done with its memory subsystem.

Apart from that, developers at gamescom seem to acknowledge anonymously that the PS4 has a clear 3D-performance advantage over the Xbox One which is certainly a result of many factors, not least because of its beefier GPU and its straight-forward, high-bandwidth GDDR5 setup.

I do agree that's neat, but would be kind of lame to claim that a game is 1080p when it's only the HUD/UI that actually is lol.

More information from a user of the German ComputerBase site:

He is at Gamescom right now and was able to play FIFA14 which is demonstrated on PS4. He said it looks amazing. He had a little chat with the devs and they assured him that the PS4 version of FIFA14 will look better than Xbox One version. PC version will be based on PS360 version. He's now standing in the line at Sony's booth for PS4 which has the longest waiting time on the whole exhibition. source

This is not official so expect this information to contain a huge amount of subjectivity.

So EA took the money and ran?

Hard to believe this part. It strikes me as odd that developers would go out of their way to voice out their preferences...
I don't know...

Can anyone summarize the thread? What's the consensus? Is the OP true?

WTF is hUMA?
Know it all explainations
Everyone knows what hUMA is
Argument about the definition of hUMA vs virtual memory

Gladiator mode
http://www.gamespot.com/gamescom/ryse-son-of-rome-gladiator-mode-trailer-6413347/

The gameplay is kinda sad to watch... the character animation were ugly as hell.

It suffers from some basic bad art design examples. This gif is a good example. The artists do not understand feature size of the texture elements. The ripple sizes are too large. They also have problems with wall textures having too large of feature size, and thus make the game look like dolls in a toy set. The overuse of focus effects don't help this either. Same feature size problem existed with the boat fire feature size as well.
Devs said they outsourced some of the art job. This is seems to be a result.

Any quotes from gamescon goers or devs about the difference in multiplat ps4/xb1 games?

Are there actually multiplatform games being shown on both at the show? I was under the impression they were only showing a PC or PS4 or XB1 version and nothing anyone could even compare. I think this is all going to be smoke and mirrors at these shows and probably orchestrated by MS since they will no doubt have the worst looking/performing version available just based on specs. You aren't going to get many on the record quotes from devs either since they have to push this parity nonsense in every interview just like they did this generation and see how that turned out.

Why does that Ryse video say "xbox live required" when they're only playing 2 player? Is LAN gaming support on consoles now a thing of the past?

Why wouldn't they? Developers are people after all, and they likely feel just the same as many of us do here.

It's only the PR representatives and key personnel, whose job is to limit information and news on differentials and such.

He only said that the EA guys told him that PS4 version of FIFA14 will look better than Xbox One version.
He added later in the same post that he's seen both versions and both look great. He couldn't make out any differences, maybe some details.

The guy updated his post, by the way:

He was able to get hands-on with the DualShock4 and according to him the controller is a masterpiece and a perfect synergy of DS3 and Xbox360 pad. He also saw Driveclub and he says that it has insane graphics.

PS4 truly is return of the champ.

True. I guess november will be very telling.

I wish there was more info on this topic and these little 'custom' things next gen consoles have. Despite being mid-range pc in-a-box they seem to carry some tech that reminds me of the good old days of custom hw and hopefully make them more powerful to last the whole generation.
It is always fun to see developers find new ways of pushing tech using these new possbilities.

AMD with all of its clear gaming advantages over Intel back then couldn't help them gain dominance. That just shows the vast majority of people didn't care one bit about their integrated GPUs and sought for a better CPU which was always Intel's advantage in that space. I don't see the situation getting any better for AMD.

Frankly AMD is best position ever. Soon in AAA gaming having more cores will be better than having less faster cores. Right now it is opposite. Games do use 1 core for all its logic and rest as help instead of stuffing all cores properly.

Aside from the fact that this is incorrect to label as such for all games (especially more recent stuff), having weaker cores with lower ipc is never preferred to higher IPC.

This is something we keep forgetting... Most people won't tell the difference. Developers know what's going on, so they can really say one version is better than the other, but the differences will be minute.

Don't count on Richard Leadbetter to expose them this time, though ;)
