Child of Light trailer/screens (Ubisoft JRPG, Rayman Engine, PC/360/PS3/WiiU/XB1/PS4)

Not so sure about the overall style of the game (a little girl flying around with some fairy with her), but the game sounds pretty damn good otherwise. If it gets good reviews and has lots of content, has a good price/value, I'll pick it up for Wii U.

Incredibly beautiful. I can't wait til someone adapts one of Miyazaki's movies into a video game using this engine. So good.

There are no random encounters in Child of Light; rather, you see every enemy within the environment and, upon touching them, are thrust into battle.

Thank goodness.

Looks pretty neat. Hopefully it's fun and not too easy.

I think it's art style that makes it not feel like jRPG. As amazing as it is, it has western vibe all over it. JRPG doesn't have to be turn-base. Tales series or Seiken Densetsu for example are action-rpg but they are also 100% jrpg because of their look. If a game use Tales mechanic and Little Big Planet art nobody will call it a jrpg.

This is the B-Tier games revival we're looking for.

No they're not. This looks like any other 2D indie game I would see talked about in the steam thread daily and it's disappointing to see even AAA studios doing this now.

B tier games are a ton of PS2-era games that were way more ambitious than this but not full blown "dump tens of millions into it" type games. I would say stuff like State of Decay and I am alive (although that was mismanaged so much and for so long the budget was probably pretty high) is more representative of the PS2 era B game.

When Aurora enters battle, we’re treated to an exhilarating fly through of the arena before the camera settles on our hero and her adversaries. Battles operate in a turn-based system, with a cast meter dicting the turn order of each character on screen. The meter is divided into two sections: a longer, blue “wait” section, then a short, red “cast” section at the end. Each character is represented by a small icon that slides along the meter as they ready themselves.
The key to battling in Child of Light is to time your attacks properly. Attacking an enemy that’s in the red cast section will interrupt its attack, sending it all the way back to the beginning of the meter. When Aurora and her friends have their turn, time stands still, and an elegant menu opens with a host of different options, like attacking, casting spells, using items, and other familiar JRPG goodies.

I wasn't really into this until I saw that it was motherfucking Grandia. So In. So very fucking in. I wonder why they hid the action bar in the trailer?

I don't get what you mean. There are a tons of indie games that are just as or more ambitious than what you may refer too as Ps2 era styles B games. What is a B game? What's an indie game?

this is so glorious. yay female heroine.

I just hope it's a rather meaty experience, with depth in something, be it story or what. a 3 hour babys first rpg would be sour.

looks great though, to me.

Same here. I'm probably in the minority but FF-style active time battle systems tend to bore me unless there's some other major game mechanic involved.

Did the Grandia battle system bore you if you ever played the Grandia games? Their fun as hell and easily the best battle system from the JRPG genre. Though I never cared for the ATB FF battle system nowhere as good as the Grandia battle system.

Yup, that's the IP gauge right there in that screenshot, ripped straight out of a Grandia game and turned into a straight line instead of a wheel type of display... :p It even has the casting segment of the bar where you can be interrupted with a Strong attack or a Attack Cancelling skill.

It'll be missing the positional elements of the Grandia series (as well as the refinements from Grandia 2, Extreme and 3) but hopefully we get a better in-depth look at the battle system another time. Would like to see things like the stats, magic and party systems, as well as any other elements of combat (combos? air combos? special skills?)...

I'm such a nerd for battle systems, sometimes...

Looks amazing, love the art style.

I do hope the HUD is tweaked though, not crazy about it.

The font doesn't match the rest of the art style.

This looks incredible. The art direction is goddamn gorgeous. If the gameplay is solid I will definitely buy it.

But am I the only one who was a little disappointed when they revealed it has a "battle system"? I was kind of hoping it would be a pure adventure thing.

At this point in time a 2D game is hardly taking much of a chance. Like I said it looks like it could be any other indie game I see in the steam thread.

Indie, AAA - who cares. It looks amazing and that's all that matters to me.

Why are people praising the engine? That has almost nothing to do with the art style, especially not in a 2d game like this. I guess it's a nice engine that makes games like this possible, but it's not some kind of miracle.

The engine has everything to do with this game being made in this style and with this number of people on the team.

Unfortunately I never got to try it. I blame an ex-girlfriend.

Must say that, based on the trailer alone, I'm very excited about this game. Games that seemingly deliver narrative through visual direction and music speaks to me greatly (as opposed to heavy handed scripts). The animation sequence in the movement of the main character is whimsical and beautiful (most likely deliberate considering the fairy-esque motif). Then again I'm easily taken in by fluid animation regardless of the game's genre, or target demographic.

I'm probably setting myself up for disappointment with how much I'm looking forward to this game, but if it indeed turns out to be a short downloadable game I hope that the pricing reflects that. And that they don't have too much added fluff to artificially pad out the game that could detract from a memorable experience. After all, there's been plenty of times where something short and sweet far outshined the more conventional.

UbiArt engine is easily one of my favorites. Game looks absolutely stunning, and I'm glad the engine is getting some use outside of platformers.

Wow, that looks beautiful, unfortunately I really don't enjoy turn based games. :( I need RPG's with real time battle systems (ME2, Deus Ex:HR)

is beloved, despite what anyone might say
Well, for example a linear narrative structure or a lack of conversation trees. The fixed character/enemy positions in combat.

Also, I believe there have been more sidescrolling JRPGs than sidescrolling WRPGs, so even the perspective points more to that sub-genre.

You ever play Heroes of the Lance for NES? The only sidescrolling western RPG I can recall... man it was the absolute bottom of the barrel as far as NES games go :p

I'm just still shocked that a game like this is coming from Ubisoft of all places. I usually associate that company with extremely focus-tested soulless games, and Rayman :p

All 2d games == safe bets confirmed.

Regardless of the actual... game design.

Game looks unique and cool, not to mention beautiful in a way I've never seen, that's why I'm interested. Can't remember many other puzzle-platformer JRPGs with a fairytale tone on Steam off the top of my head.

Being stuck in 2D kind of limits the amount of "chances" you can take. We're not talking good or bad design here, the word chosen was chance as if they're taking some kind of a risk by making an inexpensive 2D game.

I disagree. It limits the design from being able to be a 3D game, but that's it. Cutting out a coordinate axis doesn't cut down on the infinite possible designs you could create -- you just focus on other things rather than exploring three dimensional space. Many 3D games only explore 2D space anyway, just like topdown/isometric 2D.

By the way, I'm not saying we aren't saturated with indie platformers these days. I'm just saying this game looks cool, and shows there are still ways to stand out.

Also, making a game with a little girl main character with aesthetics this unabashedly beautiful and children's book inspired would be considered a risk by lots of industry folks. Particularly on the heels of two Rayman games.
