Gotta agree, XBO UI looks much better than this. Hopefully they're working on something more elegant that's just as light on system resources, but the UI isn't really a major issue that'll make or break a system just yet. There's time for improvement on that after launch.
Kotaku updated their story indicating that Sony PR said the footage is "from a debug unit that is not at all representative of the final consumer experience". I'm sure there's some aspects from that video that will be in the final version but I personally am not taking any leaked UI stuff seriously. I'll wait for some official footage or until I actually have my PS4 which at this rate, it seems like the latter is more likely.

Reserving judgment until the official UI demo Sony promised us we'd get closer to launch.
This looks like a slightly neutered devkit, it's poor video quality (the repost), and in French. I think it's too early to be condemning it, especially while ms has been showing metro openly for a while now.
Same.
I started digging the XMB a lot more when I got my hands on an Uncharted theme so hopefully that helps on PS4, but honestly it's still pretty boring to navigate on PS3 and it took me a while to discover little features on the console because it didn't feel like there was any incentive to explore it. It's basically just a tool rather than an additional experience that gives the console some character. I get that plenty of people are satisfied with it just being a navigation tool and that's fine, but when I'm being told that "Greatness Awaits" I'd kind of like to see a little more thought being put into the entire experience, not just the stunning games. I want to be blown away from start to finish. From what they've shown so far it's just kind of bland and makes me want to load up a game right away instead of checking things out.
'I've just eaten the best meal ever, but the cutlery was shite.'
That's what you're saying here.

You don't think people would notice if fancy restaurants served their food on paper plates, and gave you plastic forks and knives to eat it with? Doesn't mean the food isn't great.

Nah, I expect to be visually stimulated. I see where he's coming from. Everybody likes to make their phones, PC's, tablets their own and to have a little flair. This is a basic expectation of electronics these days.
Ha, better way to put it. It's all about the whole experience.

I'm a form follow function person - I don't like excessive decoration, and twinkly things in a UI just screams 'novelty'.I find them intrusive, distracting and pretty soon after that, annoying. It's one of the reasons I like XMB as it is - it's simple, direct and logical.
No, but by the same mark I wouldn't mark them down for using plain, functional dinner plates & cutlery over something more flowery.
Dude, it comes out in less than 30 days. I think anything we see is going to be pretty close to what we get at launch. I would assume manufacturing is starting and the OS is being installed to drives. Including shipments, it still needs to travel for about a week to get where they are launching and still get to stores a few days early for presentation and stock. That makes it less than 20 days out.
I would assume the final OS is probably already on the HDD and what we're seeing is very close to final sans day 1 updates. Even 'debug units' will be pretty close to final.
Apparently this YouTube Lets player (Tetraninja) has got an early copy of Assassins creed 4 running on PS4.
You can see some of the PS4 UI at the beginning of the video:

You wouldn't, but others would. It's why "plating" is a review category.

My bad; I thought that was from the main user interface on PS4. I thought it was kinda weird for a sec' it'd be the main hub.Good thing that's not the main UI and is just the social area...
You can't compare the main interface of one to just one segment of another. The official videos from Sony and authorized hands on videos will give us the full scoop.
That looks more like Ubisoft's client then PS4. UPlay takes over the game before you play perhaps?

Isn't that the actual game UI? I think the game is already launched.
Yes, that's the Game's UI. However, the keyboard that pops up is the PS4's OS keyboard.
I just wish he would have pressed R3 and tried using the touchpad to type.
At least they've made it fast. It really looks like Sony has no design philosophy here. Looks like a drag to navigate through.
Different philosophies at work. Take the 360 vs PS3. Microsoft spends a lot of time, money and effort to make their UI better than Sony's. And it shows, it is better. Why? They want you to spend time in it because they're selling ad space. They merged the store into the UI so that you're constantly being sold to. If their UI was plain and boring like Sony's with a separate store that took forever to load and navigate, you'd spend less time in consumer-mode. Sony's philosophy is to get you from the On button to the game as quickly as possible. When I'm in gamer mode, I prefer Sony's method. When I'm in consumer mode and want to see what's new etc I prefer Microsoft's approach. Ideally for me Microsoft's approach is better, but they ultimately ruin the experience by polluting the UI with fast food, cellphone etc commercials.

That screen is basically PS4's version of the trending section like on Xbone.
I'll gladly take the PS4's inelegant yet functional UI over the pretty, ad infested mess on the Xbox.
You must be suffering from a traumatising issue that burned advertisements in your retina. I can't think of any other reason you would see ads in the videos of the Xbox One UI, because there weren't any.

Looks fast, but man sony is so behind ms in the os area. Oh well
I just wish Sony would've done something with it instead of the static blue background. Give us some cool transitions utilizing the shapes pattern and ribbon. I want to see the graphics on the console packaging in motion. It doesn't have to be some crazy 3 second long animation, just something subtle and sleek that gives me the impression that they wanted to make the entire experience enjoyable as soon as I turn on the system.
It just sucks seeing the potential go to waste.
Are you one of those people that think the "Recommended" section of the front page of the XBO is not a section for Ads??
Assuming that this is the only choice you'll have for a background is being kind of ignorant. Of course you'll be able to change to different backgrounds/themes on the final system. This is a dev kit, it's missing a lot of the bells and whistles the final product will allow for and have.
.
Also, why haven't Sony done anything official such as videos yet showcasing this? Where is the outcry for someone from Sony to join GAF and feed us some legit information?
Sony's already confirmed that they're going to do one that'll be posted on the PSblog in the future. And an insider has said that Andrew Goldfarb will be doing a walkthrough for IGN soon.

Sony hasn't had confusing PR which would need clarification.
Good points.
I'd still prefer the better UI though. If it means overlooking ads then so be it. I can still boot a game instantly on 360 even with it's more elaborate UI. Give me the better brand integration and cool transitions. Shouldn't they be pimping stuff on PS+? Hit me with ads for games and other things to spend my money on but do it in a way that'll entice me to do it.
