PS4 demo kiosks are starting to pop up at Gamestop & Best Buy

You can be lucky/a dick and pray there isnt a person working in a store thats watching the time limits. Only one lady in my store was making sure people were taking turns.

No one was in the Palo Alto store

You could literally take all the time you wanted until you felt guilty about it and let someone else have a turn

There was one setup on a 4K tv (pretty sure it was a 4k 60-70 inch tv), the same guy was on that for like 40 minutes probably

I played for about an hour in my store, but that's because it was pretty empty at the time, and the few people who stopped by just wanted to watch when I offered them my controller. I'd gone with my brother, too, so we were hogging two of the consoles at a time.

So jealous. Had to cancel my preorder because of bills (car insurance coming out this month etc.), and because I still have some current gen games I want to play. But, next year!

Lucky. I literally started playing then 5 minutes later a bunch of little kids came in

A couple of them were even in wheelchairs I kid you not. No way was I going to be the dick that didn't let them have a go

Played a bit of knack a bit of octodad then helped them get started and went on my way

Enough time to get a basic impression of the controller

Will go back late on a weekday I think to get more time

One part in the video was about thumbs touching on the DS3. When I use mine (and any other controller, mind you) I only use the tip of my thumbs. I've seen videos (like this) where people use the joints of their thumbs. No wonder I've never had my thumbs touch on DS3. Am I in the minority here, or what? I tried it out and it just feels bizarre to me using my thumbsticks with the joints in my thumbs. I wonder if the people that complain about their thumbs touching hold it that way.

Just got back from mine. Controller feels good but I was hoping it would be bigger. The L1/2 R1/2 feel a bit small compared to the 360 pad bumper/triggers. Same with the analog sticks, pretty small. Everything else was good, the controller is super light, the buttons feel good, the touch pad is a lot easier to click than I would have guessed.

Knack looks okay, a lot harder than you would think and super clean and crisp graphically. FIFA is way more improved than I was expecting. The camera angles on the replays, the grass, the animations, the crowds, the clarity, it was really nice.

Nothing blew me away graphically but just from the standpoint of how clear the image quality is on the games is a big deal for me.

Everyone uses the tips of their thumbs. No idea what this guy is doing. It's like he's never used thumbsticks before.

Just got my hands on the Ps4 at my local Sony store. The only downside to the controller is that the PS button now looks kind of cheap. Its amazing how good it felt and improved on basically everything, d-pad included. I loved how "clicky" the buttons felt. Although everything changed it still had a very dualshock feel to it. People are really going to love this controller.

I wish they had a game that utilized the touchpad to see if the tracking would be responsive. Surface definitely felt super nice, better than my ipad or phone screen and better than my dell laptop trackpad.

Has anyone seen a PS4 in a Canadian store? Preferably in the calgary/edmonton area? Would love to try one now that ive tried the Xbox One :)

It's not just him. I've seen several videos of people who do it as well and use that as proof the sticks are too close together. I have fairly large hands and my thumbs have rarely (if ever) touched each other.

The controller is really comfortable. In pics it looks like a small change but once you grasp the controller, you can really get a nice grip with it. The buttons and analog sticks felt nice and the touchpad wasnt very big. The triggers felt something like the real triggers that you'd put on the PS3 controller. it's not quite like the 360 triggers but it's good though. I don't see any complaints coming from someone about this controller that doesn't seem like nitpicking.

Now demo wise I was very disappointed to be honest. You don't showcase a new console using half assed ports of last gen games and the game I'm talking about is Fifa 14. The game looks hardly different from current gen versions at a glance and only thing I noticed was it's just a nice cleaner image but nothing too drastic. I don't care about soccer so I tried to exit out the game but it seems like the system wasn't doing anything when I pressed the PS button. I think the unit was stuck on Fifa.

Knack I didn't get to play because some kids were on it but graphically it looked okay in some parts and some parts looked a littler nice but it doesn't look like something you'd never see playing on current gen. I wanted to play it but I just decided to leave since this kid was playing it for a long time. It looked difficult though as this one dude who was playing it when i first got in there was dying repeatedly. I don't think there was any other demos there so that's what kind of ticked me off since I wanted to play Contrast and anything else they had.

There was this troll there that stood beside us saying the games looked like Playstation 3.5 or Dreamcast and that if we were unimpressed. He was then joking about how he could try and steal the PS4 since it was only a shell out on the counter. You can hear him talking near the end of the video saying something about "Playstation 2 hardware."

Terrible way imo to show new hardware because those games simply weren't screaming next gen. I wish they had a demo for Killzone and Resogun or Driveclub at least. Still excited to get mines day 1 still.

I will self manufacture a cloth with rubber bands on each side that covers the light and sell them as DS4 accessories. Not really but there seem to be a market, tape leaves undesired residue, my imaginary product solves that.

Rubber bands are intrusive.

Plastic clip on is where it is at.

So from my trip to the Sony store in the Pentagon City mall earlier, I also filmed a few bits of footage. I thought I'd post it in case anyone was curious: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JHm2XEmiNJE.

Keep in mind I just bought this camcorder yesterday so I'm still getting used to filming with it. And there wasn't much to really show. So don't expect any kind of good footage, just some random bits.

What video?

Got a chance to check out the demo unit at one of the stores in San Diego today. In the store I went to SONY really had a nice set up…I think they had about 5 units up on display and they were on some pretty huge TV's This was my 2nd time trying out the PS4, and I'd forgotten just how good the DS4 feels…the triggers are so nice! I love how the touchpad also acts as a button, and I hope devs (cough DICE…don't just use it for battlelog) will implement different options based on where your fingers are when the touchpad is pushed as a button. Share button didn't seem to work on any of these demos, and option just acted like the traditional start button would. The only thing I remember the touchpad working on was the main interface, you could use it to swipe left and right when choosing a title or video to watch.

I'm debating about using the triggers for Battlefield 4 (if DICE even gives us the option not to use them) but I'm thinking now that I'll seriously give them a try in that configuration, as they actually feel much better to use than L1/R1.

This was my first time to give Knack a try, it's a fun cute little game but as other's had said it wasn't exactly visually mind blowing. Like other's have mentioned it was a lot tougher than I was expecting, and I had it on normal.

I will admit though, the nice thing about all the demos SONY had up was that they all seemed to be in 1080p…everything looked very crisp and although I noticed a few frame dips in Knack and FIFA, for the most part everything felt like it was running at 60FPS. I pretty sure these are rather old builds, so I expect everything to be running great with the final games. It's just a shame there wasn't a Killzone or Driveclub, something that really screamed next-gen.

As far as audio goes I have no idea, on the unit I was playing the TV volume didn't seem to be up very high, so I couldn't hear anything.

Since these units were actually outside and not encased in glass, I made a point to feel the unit to see if it get's hot or not. It was cool to the touch, not even warm, and these are units that have been running all day…I put my hands in the back to see if any air was blowing out and I couldn't even feel that. Will be interesting to see if that is the same once we get some games on it that are really starting to push the hardware.

I think the only negative thing I experienced was the load times when quitting out of a game. When you quit out of a game, it counts up to 100. I hope this isn't the case with final software. (but at least they give you a timer…instead of just sitting there at a blank screen waiting for something to load)

Fairly certain the PS4 units you looked at were empty shells

Hi kurisub306.
I have 2 questions to you: why the controller is cable connected... But the PS4 has 2 spare usb connections in its front? And the second one: why the PS4 is turned off? Or its a mock up unit?
Sorry if these questions have been already answered.
Thank you!

Edit: beaten! ;p

Controller is connected so it doesn't get stolen. There's a full harness on the controller, much the same as almost any demo unit. Curiously, Sony stores sometimes didn't do this with their PS3 controllers.

The console unit on display is just that: a display model. This is because they don't want people messing with the cables, resetting or messing things up, or even walking away with the console.

Yes that's a good sign although the fact that I'm fairly certain there weren't connected to anything except a security cord should also be a good indicator

Weight too

Yeah I feel like an idiot for checking the heat and fans now, especially since when I walked up to it I was like "oh these look like demo shells" but I got so caught up playing the demos that I just checked it out of habit like I do sometimes with my PS3. Hell now that I think about it, there wasn't even anything plugged in to the back of it…including power haha.

Its fine I had to correct some teenager when I was there

He couldn't believe how light it was as he picked it up and turned it over

He thought it was not only an actual PS4 but connected and playing the demo

I've always used the tips of my thumbs. Using the middle of my thumb just feels off.

Back when I played Halo 3 and CoD 4 on 360 a good amount, I'd always wear off the rubber from the bottom of the left stick. Sprinting forward with that stick meant my thumb was always pushing up from underneath it. Pushing up from on top of the stick makes it feel like my thumb is going to slide off and I need to constantly readjust.

Everyone keeps talking about the PS4s being empty shells and the loadtimes when leaving a game took forever. It would be interesting to find out if these games were all being loaded remotely. Gaikai test-drive.

I wanna touch dat juicy booty!

I gotta go enquire if my local store is getting SOMETHING before launch... highly highly doubtful considering where I live. Jealous :(

Check the whirlpool thread, I'm sure some people there will post if any demo units pop up - and then it's at least Australia specific discussion.

Seriously, how can people play like this?

wtf.png

Yeah, they want to be able to touch thumbs to complain it seem. I don't rest the ball of my thumb joint on the analog but rather the finger print area of the thumb on them. Do people put the joint of their thumbs on the left 360 analog?

I'm convinced it's because he's actually not playing a game, he's more modelling the controller and not thinking about it.

Exactly the same way when you go to try on shoes at a store and infact don't seem to walk naturally, it's like you're trying to walk.
He should actually have had someone film him about 5 minutes into a game, would show his more natural hand pose.

I just hope this controller fixes ultra ultra tight twitch games. When you have to be super accurate in really twitchy tight games (GT5, higher ranks, higher speeds - very precise turning) I find I flex my hand to try and keep a very precise grip on the controller, yet still be able to move both triggers and both sticks very precisely.
It fucking ends up being agony after a while - even with realtriggers and a kontrolfreek (google image it, amazing thing)

I wasn't specifically talking about him. Of course he's not playing at that exact moment. But people complaining about their thumbs touching while playing proves that they're actually playing exactly like that. Makes my head hurt..

The guy's thumbs are super exaggerated, but my fingers can definitely touch a little bit when playing on a DS3 sometimes. Yet some people will very adamant that it's "my fault" and I'm "holding it wrong."

Fingers slip around a little when you're moving the sticks around. Sometimes mine touch. I don't like it. It looks like the DS4 fixes this, and I sure hope that's the case!

My hands are huge and they never touch. You're supposed to control the sticks with the tips of your thumb.

I've controlled every controller with sticks that I've ever used by having the center of my thumbs (like the...top part. Where the thumb print is) on the center of the sticks. And believe me, I am not the only one. I doubt I'm even the minority.

For the hell of it I googled How To Hold The Dual Shock. Apparently what I'm saying is the right way. Using the pads of the thumbs:

And the illustration for how not to hold it is:

I'm not even that dramatic. My thumb is further back (to the left for these pictures) than this guy's is and my thumbs still touch sometimes.
