Got a chance to check out the demo unit at one of the stores in San Diego today. In the store I went to SONY really had a nice set up
I think they had about 5 units up on display and they were on some pretty huge TV's This was my 2nd time trying out the PS4, and I'd forgotten just how good the DS4 feels
the triggers are so nice! I love how the touchpad also acts as a button, and I hope devs (cough DICE
don't just use it for battlelog) will implement different options based on where your fingers are when the touchpad is pushed as a button. Share button didn't seem to work on any of these demos, and option just acted like the traditional start button would. The only thing I remember the touchpad working on was the main interface, you could use it to swipe left and right when choosing a title or video to watch.
I'm debating about using the triggers for Battlefield 4 (if DICE even gives us the option not to use them) but I'm thinking now that I'll seriously give them a try in that configuration, as they actually feel much better to use than L1/R1.
This was my first time to give Knack a try, it's a fun cute little game but as other's had said it wasn't exactly visually mind blowing. Like other's have mentioned it was a lot tougher than I was expecting, and I had it on normal.
I will admit though, the nice thing about all the demos SONY had up was that they all seemed to be in 1080p
everything looked very crisp and although I noticed a few frame dips in Knack and FIFA, for the most part everything felt like it was running at 60FPS. I pretty sure these are rather old builds, so I expect everything to be running great with the final games. It's just a shame there wasn't a Killzone or Driveclub, something that really screamed next-gen.
As far as audio goes I have no idea, on the unit I was playing the TV volume didn't seem to be up very high, so I couldn't hear anything.
Since these units were actually outside and not encased in glass, I made a point to feel the unit to see if it get's hot or not. It was cool to the touch, not even warm, and these are units that have been running all day
I put my hands in the back to see if any air was blowing out and I couldn't even feel that. Will be interesting to see if that is the same once we get some games on it that are really starting to push the hardware.
I think the only negative thing I experienced was the load times when quitting out of a game. When you quit out of a game, it counts up to 100. I hope this isn't the case with final software. (but at least they give you a timer
instead of just sitting there at a blank screen waiting for something to load)
