Super Mario 3D World | Review Thread

I'm getting my PS4 on the 2nd of December, but fuck this game is making me wish I had a WiiU.

Full disclosure, the last Mario game I played was Super Mario Bros 3 on the NES when it came out. And I really want to jump back in....

No way... there are so many games you get to experience for the first time:

Super Mario World
SMW 2: Yoshi's Island
Super Mario 64
Super Mario Galaxy
SMG 2

Those are 5 of the best games ever. Mario 3 is arguably as good as any of them though.

NSMB for the DS is probably my favorite 2D Mario. I've played all the older ones like 3 and World but damn, they bore me to death. If we count Super Princess Peach as a Mario game, then that'd be my fave instead.

I'll go on record saying SPP is my favorite 2D platformer ever. That game is legit fun.

No offence, but all I see before me is W-R-O-N-G flashing in big letters after reading your post. You're entitled to your opinions of course, I just cannot begin to fathom how anybody could arrive at such opinions.

At all.

I disagree with all of this. That is all.

This is reveiwing better than I expected and it might be the first Mario game I complete(though I'll probably finish 3D Land and U in anticipation for this game).

Yeah, I agree that the shadow of Mario 64 keeps people from seeing how good these new games are.

Mario 64 was a different type of game. I want this game badly, but I'll never give up hope for a SM64 sequel. I'm afraid that Nintendo has gotten so good at perfecting the SMG type of game, they'll never want to explore what they did with SM64/Sunshine again.

It seems the Mario 3D formula seems to work well in bite sized morsels. While Super Mario 64 and Sunshine (to some extent) had 3D playgrounds, eventually you run into the wall of trying to have diverse worlds without having to copy them, and if they weren't copies, were just limited in ideas, sort of like how Banjo-Kazooie and DK64 only had 8 "worlds" with things to do in them.
Speak for yourself. I had a blast from start to finish in Mario 64. If anything, 3D Land's limited thematic variation in levels lead to it running into a wall of limited diversity. Since they are all bite sized, they're far less memorable. There is less careful thought put into the replay value of each level.

Sunshine had it's problems but I liked the concept with Fludd and the tropical theme(although I hated the design of the locals). It's execution in some parts was weak though, some of it was good but the game as a whole felt unfinished. The blue coins, the camera and even the level design and collision detection could have all used some more time.

Sunshine also got tasked with the impossible, trying to follow up Mario 64. There was no satisfying those expectations.

I had a few friends in high school that loved NSMB. Sadly I never owned a DS :-(

Getting an XL on friday though for zelda. I'm excited to start tackling that backlog!!

I am going to post this here, for visibilities sake, since I cannot create threads yet.

Someone should create and maintain a "Reviews Embargo" thread. I would be extremely interested to know what all the upcoming reviews embargoes are and when they are going to end, so I know when to look for them.

Is it just this crazy holiday season that review embargoes become relevant, or are they relevant for ALL big releases? I think an ongoing and maintained countdown thread would be a big hit.

Thoughts?

I refuse to believe any of this is true.

"Reviewer #1: Wow, this sure is a video game! It's interactive and I can manipulate the character by pressing "up" on the joystick! Good colors and sound! 9/10"

"Reviewer #2: This is certainly even better than the last outing... which was nearly perfect in the first place! There is replayability and a sense of wonder! 10/10"

"Reviewer #3: This "appreciation check" sure did buy me and my wife a great French dinner. What a romantic evening. Wait this is about a video game? Fuck it, 10/10"

"Reviewer #4: The mechanics are very sound. This studio produces top-notch games every time, this one is no exception. 9/10"

I can't believe they printed that.

I don't really understand all the hate the NSMB series gets. They are no visual marvel but they usually look quite clean and even pretty at times, especially the Wii U version. The gameplay is tight and fun and, at least in the Wii and Wii U games, almost every level introduces a new fun idea to play.

This hate particularly confuses me when I see the praise that the Rayman series gets around here, since the change from Origins to Legends is pretty comparable to the change from NSMBWii to NSMBU. I guess the art style just makes it impossible to hate! (I love Rayman Origins so don't get me wrong)

Only thing I dislike about the NSMB games is that the soundtracks recycle so many songs... I have no problem with remixes, but even NSMBU uses crappy samples and doesn't even remix the returning tunes.

This thread is filled with so much sarcasm and unconventional opinion that I'm starting to lose my ability to discern between the two.

Wait, am I being sarcastic? Shit, I forget.

Literally waiting on my paycheck this week.
To be fair though, what held me off till now was hoping for a good black friday deal but slim pickings on that front

I am surprised at the infrequency of price drops for Wii U games.

PS3 games seem to drop in price like a stone, reaching the $39.99 price point in 6-8 months, or $19.99 after a year.

Of course Nintendo is known to be stingy with pricing on their first-party titles.

I won't compare 3D and 2D Mario because they are fairly different beasts, but I'd rank NSMBU, NSMBWii, and SMB3 above SMW. Even as a kid SMW felt lacking compared to 3, and NSMBWii and U are the best 2D games yet. Definitely play all of them, though.

Watching speedruns almost convinced me that Sunshine was top tier. Of course, then I remembered the same thing happened while watching 64 speed runs too and came back to my better senses.

Walruses, camels, bears, rabbits, tigers and badgers.
It's pretty funny thinking back to the majority of us thinking that Mario Kart 8 and Sonic Lost World looked like legit better games then Super Mario 3D World. I never bought into the whole Lost World movement (it's EAD Tokyo and Sonic Team, come on) but just six months ago I seriously was more hyped for Mario Kart 8 then a mainline 3D Mario platformer. I know the initial trailer for 3D World was underwhelming, but I can't help but wonder wth was wrong with me for ever doubting EAD Tokyo...Seriously should have known better.

On a side note, Mario Kart 8 still looks great.

Ya'll are crazy saying Sunshine is a BAD game.

It's not as good as Mario 64, but it's still a very solid game with INCREDIBLE controls.

Its issues are:

1. Too few areas
2. Too many objectives per area
3. Blue Coins

Other than that, it was pretty fantastic.

I don't understand the complaint over the blue coin search. I thought it was pretty cool ... get 10 blue coins, trade in for one star. Repeat. It was a side quest, not the main game.

I mean, even if you thought it was an 'issue,' you did get them all, right?

Edit: BTW I agree with the other two.
