Problems with XBL - WTF is this?

Great, it apparently likes to break after I come home from work, eat and shower, not when I'm at work, how fantastic!

Oooh, I am pleased it was ok 16 hours ago apparently:

LIVE is looking pretty good now....how is it for you guys-n-girls? about 16 hours ago from web
Thanks MajorNelson, how about telling us why its broken?

Neither me or my wife can recover our gamertags, apparently. I tried a bunch last night and gave up. I'm at work now and she's at home with the day off and was hoping to get to play Lego Star Wars some, but she can't recover hers either. And if she goes back to the hard drive her gamertag was originally on it tells her it's not valid anymore. It's stuck in limbo or something. This is ridiculous. Upon further investigation it appears this problem has been going on for about a week now...

I saw it here a while back, try signing in inside the game and not on the dashboard, I've managed to have some games tonight that have been found reasonably quickly.

Right now, pretty much the only time XBL is guaranteed to work is early in the morning and late at night. From 4-10PM EST (you know, the time's when most people want to play) it's totally fucked.

Your complaint; direct it here:

Microsoft has told Eurogamer that an official response to Xbox Live's poor festive performance is expected as soon as today.

Wow, someone set up a DOS attack against Microsoft?

Was it jesus?
It's not like it hasn't happened before. However, the sophistication of network hardware to prevent DOS attacks has grown significantly in the last few years and I don't believe that Microsoft has neither the hardware or bandwidth to deal with a DOS attack, even with record peak usage.

If a DOS attack can still knock Live off the air 13 days later, I they need some new guidance as far as blocking offending IP addresses.

I have to admit I'm blaming the fall update. Ever since that patch hit my 360 started displaying the swirly HDD logo thing excessively - it even crashed once or twice on the dashboard.

But that may just be my newbness to the 360.

Still... I cannot shake the suspicion.

Would a DOS attack really last 13 days (and counting) though?

I really think it's just the big influx of 360 users for Xmas, many of which are going online for the first time. The 360 no doubt sold well in Dec, and a lot of those sold in Nov were for gifts. And if a lot of them are signing up for their free month, it can put quite a strain on the system.

Whatever the reason, they need to fix it. Considering they charge $50 a year, and have advertising, and get a cut of the stuff they sell/rent, surely they have enough resources to pay for fixing it (not to mention they are Microsoft, one of the richest companies in the world).

As many of you know, I have keeping you up to date on the status of Xbox LIVE. Here is an official message from Marc Whitten (Notwen) GM of Xbox LIVE on where we are and what we are going to do. Again, thanks for your patience.

Dear Xbox LIVE Members:
During this past holiday season you helped us break a number of Xbox LIVE records. This included our largest sign-up of new members to Xbox LIVE in our 5 year history and just yesterday you broke the record for the single biggest day of concurrent members ever on the service. As a result of this massive increase in usage we know that some of you experienced intermittent Xbox LIVE issues over the holiday break. While the service was not completely offline at any given time, we are disappointed in our performance. I would like to take this moment to thank you each and every one of you for your patience and understanding as our team has worked around the clock to return the service to a stable state. At the same time we would like to offer a token of our appreciation to all of you in celebration of record success for the service. And as a thank you for your loyalty during this holiday period, we will be offering all of our Xbox LIVE members around the world access to a full Xbox LIVE Arcade game that will be available to download free of charge. In the coming weeks we will be sharing the specific details of this offer with you.

Thank you again for helping make Xbox LIVE everything that it is today!

Sincerely,
Marc Whitten
General Manager, Xbox LIVE

Does anyone else find it coincidental that these problems happened right after a massive live ban wave that happened across the mod community?

Maybe it is a DDOS attack as retaliation. If it was ONLY capacity problems, they would surely have been able to fix this by now by adding servers.

Since we're all speculating. What do you guys think?

Since Windows is so secure, I'm surprised something like this would even happen to xbox live.

On large scale networks there is a lot planning and testing that needs to be done before things are added.

I could give two shits what the problem is/was. I DO care that I'm going on 2 weeks without being able to recover my GT. That doesn't mean I can't just play on LIVE, I can't even play my single player games because I can't fucking load my saves.

I sat by and didn't complain, thinking MS would iron out the issues over a weekend, but this is absolutely pathetic and disgusting. I've been on live since the OG Beta, so I was more tolerant because I know it's done well all this time, but 2 fucking weeks is rigoddamndiculous.

So according the insanely boring Major Nelson podcast that I listened to on my way into work, Live should be back working for everyone. Can anyone who had problems, much like myself, verify that it is working now? I really don't want to get my hopes up today at work.

It wasn't working last night. Timed out over and over for me.

I figured as much. I could give a crap about the "free game", I just want to know if I can join the office Halo/CoD match tonight. I'm guessing that answer is NO.

Is anyone still having problems? I can sign into Live just fine, but my main page/games/marketplace blades refuse to load in for me still.

I haven't been able to recover my gamertag all afternoon. Sigh. I was really looking forward to playing some 360 today.

Does this gamertag save deletion after recovery thing happen at other times too or is it just because of the general problems now? I had to recover mine and I was crossing my fingers but luckily everything was intact. First time I did it too, timed it right :s

Dear lord, I wish there was a way to retry the gamertag recovery without having to re-enter everything. I'm using a USB keyboard now, but it would still save a lot of effort. I want back on!!!

Edit: for me, it takes me to the "gamer profile is being downloaded from Xbox LIVE" step consistently and then fails. There's a step right before that sails through without a problem every time. I wonder why it's just this part of things that's messed up? I guess I'll take their advice about moving my profile around via memory unit from now on.

If you want it to work, try using the service in the early morning or late at night. I tried in the morning (which means late at night for Americans, so not much people online) and I got my GT back fine.

I have no idea when or why some people's saves get borked. Some thought it was because people were deleting their profile, then trying to recover. Well, I did no such thing. I was tolerant when I couldn't even play single player games (unlike the bitches whining about just being able to play on LIVE), but this has thrown me into a fucking rage. ALL saves since launch are GONE! I've got a bunch of saves on games I haven't completed (like Mass Effect 30hrs in, assholes) that are just gone now.

That must fucking suck. I can only imagine how pissed I'd be if I lost all my progress in games like Crackdown and especially Orange Box, where each Portal gold medal feels like an achievement in itself. It must really suck. But I find it weird... aren't those saves stored on your hd seperate from your gt? I don't understand why they can be suddenly gone

Don't get me started on Portal.....DAMMIT!!!! Yeah, they are separate from your GT and they should still be there. However, it seems like there is some MAJOR fuckup in some GT recoveries. Maybe theres x % chance that the system just deletes everything associated with the GT while attempting to recover. All downloaded content is still there, so you'd think the gamesaves should be right with them. Hell, it even changed my theme on me despite the theme I had still being on the HDD.

I don't get it. Before 4pm est Live works pretty smooth, after that time Live starts to shit itself, come 7-8pm live becomes unbearable and COD becomes nigh unplayable unless you play private matches.

I'm curious, if you go to the system blade and choose Memory -> Hard Drive -> Games, what's there? Can you find Orange Box and see if the saves are still there? If so, you should be able to hit Y for Game Options on the game and copy the saves around. If you're able to find any of these it may be worth buying a memory unit and backing them up before doing anything else gamertag-wise...

..if they're not there, sorry man. I would be really pissed to lose all my 360 saves...and there's a chance it will happen to me while trying to recover my GT.

My 360 froze while looking for a Halo3 match. Is this because of LIVE problems, or is RROD imminent?

It might not be either, could be just a one of thing...

If it happens again you should PANIC

Yeah, I stayed calm when I first loaded Mass Effect and it told me there was no save game data. I went back to the dash and to the system blade to check my memory. Low and behold ANAL RAPE TIME! No saves other than DLC. Yipppeeeeee.

I just got a new 360 today and I can't recover my GT-- just tried a few times. does that mean I can't start playing Mass Effect? As in, my save won't work on my GT if I use it with a new profile?

Man I had no idea that saved games where affected by all this too. Glad I'm not having that problem, and feel sorry for those that are.

Live is totally hosed again it seems. Whatever they thought they fixed didn't work. No word on Major Nelson's site of course, and the Live status page says "Up and Running". Such bullshit.
