Nintendo's VGX reveal is fucking Cranky Kong!!!

i think you'd see more complaining that metroid was on the wii u and how nintendo doesn't make any new franchises and how no one's going to buy a wii u for one game. nintendo's trying to make a different console than microsoft or sony and right now, it seems the way they're doing that is making one that's family friendly. hard to tell if it'll work outside the holidays, but it's at least a more solid direction than their attempt to grab their vision of hardcore gamers a year ago.

Problem is Iwata recently said 2014 is their going after the hardcore gamer again year. This year is their family year. Nintendo needs to learn to go after the total audience all at once not these year to year seat of our pants strats.

How much lols and hysterical criticism would Nintendo have gotten if they decided to not bother with the event at all like the spike awards? Instead of skipping it entirely the company made a decision to bring something light. There was no grandiose hype supplied from anyone at Nintendo. I always got the feeling that skipping the TV event wasn't a big deal at all for most. This thing has all of a sudden become such a big thing for some of you?

No one would have said anything because for over a decade Nintendo has totally ignored them. Now finally deciding after a decade to show up you would hope they would have something special planned

It took a while but I finally learned to temper my expectations when it comes to Nintendo. Normally this announcement would have disappointed me horribly, but not this time!!

Be careful what you wish for.

...and competent

I just realized something awful

Nintendo thinks their Nintendo Directs are better for big announcements than this trashy (yet popular) awards show.

How is it they have reached this level of self delusion?

The information will reach it's intended target regardless. The average person isn't going to care about either event.

I'd love to see how many "hardcore gamers" in this thread have completed DKCR to 100% completion. The game's difficulty is no joke.

They never tried to grab even their vision of the hardcore gamer. That was lip service. They launched with Nintendo Land and NSMBU alongside commercials of families playing in cubicles. And then they followed up with Game and Wario.

It's not hard to see whether or not this has been working.

How convenient to ignore the sales of Prime 2 and 3.

Indeed, and the fact that 2 & 3 weren't as novel or quite as critically-acclaimed as the first really hurt them. Franchise fatigue is a common occurrence: it hit Gears of War and God of War earlier this year, and even SMG 2 and Skyward Sword if you look at major Nintendo franchises.

It will probably hurt DKTF next year too, although it's guaranteed to have such poor sales that you'll never be able to tell in any event.

Can't really say I'm disappointed. The rest of the VGX (at least that which I bothered to watch) is a joke. Not having an epic reveal from Nintendo isn't too bad when you don't get epic reveals from anyone else either. And the whole show has been hilariously unprofessional. Such a low key event.

Shame it wasn't Smash Bros., since I want to see more of that. But of course, as always, DKC:TF looks like a great game.

May I have a cookie?
The new gameplay they showed with DK and Cranky was pretty great!

Looks like it'll be what we always wanted out of Scrooge in the DuckTales remake.

True. Although i still don't understand why they felt the need to make this announcement at the vgx, an announcement is better than no announcement whatsoever

LOL at the people claiming a Metroid pin symbolizes anything.

IT DOESN'T. NINTENDO DOESN'T WORK THIS WAY.

“If I disclosed what Retro is doing, I would have the president of Retro literally calling me right now saying, ‘Reggie, what are you doing?’ We love that people are interested. We love surprising people. I remember getting the questions before we announced Donkey Kong Country Returns. And I loved unveiling that. So…rest assured, the team is hard at work. But I’m not gonna tell you what they’re working on.”

Come on, now.

This is why I go into every Nintendo announcement and Direct expecting it to be a bunch of nothing. The times it isn't I get to be pleasantly surprised.

Pretty lame to make such a big deal over a character but that's Nintendo for you.

And your answer is Metroid?

Prime Trilogy - August 2009
Metroid Other M - August 2010
DKCR - November 2010

DKC R outsold both Metroid games combined released around similar points in the Wii lifecycle. Your claim that Metroid would be a better system seller right now holds absolutely zero ground.

No one is arguing the fact that Donkey Kong has more mass appeal. It absolutely does. The real question is how many people would buy Donkey Kong AND a Wii U that costs $300 (more than Wii in 2010... hell more than Wii in 2006) and has much less appeal than the Wii did even in 2010.

Again, you're sales numbers only indirectly help your point because the situations are not the same. Sales numbers of a game =/= how many systems that game sold.

I guess I'm not sure if Metroid would actually be better for the system, but it feels like that is what Nintendo needs right now more than another platformer. Why wouldn't someone that wants a Wii U for a platformer not already have one by the time this comes out? Mario just came out and there are better deals than there will probably be when this launches.

Ultimately, both games wouldn't do much for the system, but another character platformer feels like a complete miss.

Well, I think Nintendo dodged a bullet here. Cranky Kong still was probably one of the more exciting 'surprises' shown at VGA so far, lol. Imagine if Zelda would have been shown and tarnished by this shit stain of a show.

i think their attempt was publishing ninja gaiden, getting lots of third-party ports, getting zombi u (and a zombi u bundle). that's what they imagined of the american hardcore gamer. they've backpedaled on that and have started focusing on family-friendly things like wii party u, wii fit u, and wii sports club (in addition to mario and pikmin and the cartoony wind waker).

i feel that 2014 going for the 'hardcore gamer' is going to be more like, 'here's zelda, here's bayonetta, smash bros, here's x' it's more about reaching out to teenagers than anything else. aside from x, bayonetta, and smt x fe, they should still keep a good focus on families. dkc, mario kart, and smash will be good for that fanbase. they also have whatever the other sonic game is and yarn yoshi too. if they were smart about it, wii sports club would see a retail release as well- not that i expect it to do much, but it would be good to fill a gap somewhere.

FOR FUCK SAKE, THEY COULD HAVE GOT PRETTY MUCH ANY OF THEIR SHITTY STUDIOS MAKING TROPICAL FREEZE.

HOW ARE PEOPLE STILL NOT GETTING THIS?

Going to a show like VGX with such a large viewer base is a big deal and they wasted it on a character.

A four person indie team had a more impressive announcement.

The Wii U doesn't need anymore platformers for the moment.

I would absolutely love a Retro-made Super Metroid 2D sequel over a Metroid Prime 4.
You're absolutely right about that. I don't care what franchise it is, just please, for the love of God, no more 2D/2.5 platformers.

I thought the overacting hatred for the Cranky Kong reveal would've been a little funny, but it's just kinda sad.

Then why isnt Sony here? Then why isnt MS bringing out the big boys?

what is with this double standard?

They showed up with their next major release.

This show isn't anything important....there is a reason Spike dialed it back. And trust me it isnt so it can be more for the gamers.

Well, I for one, am glad they've realised this "Family/Core/Hardcore gamer" combo. Best thing they could do.

Because Sony and Microsoft have nothing to prove. They don't consistently drop the ball like Nintendo does. Their fans are, for the most part, pretty happy.

You're conveniently ignoring inflation rates.

(Wii U starting price should be $300 as was the basic model, not 350)
arstechnica-inflation-chart.png

Wii U is around the same price or lower than Wii (at $200) would be at if you subtract the included $50-80 games packaged (depending on bundle).

Again, you're sales numbers only indirectly help your point because the situations are not the same. Sales numbers of a game =/= how many systems that game sold.
It's about building a library and DKC appeals to both the core with its difficulty/level design and casual players with its brand.

Metroid is by in large a platformer with shooting elements. The Prime games are the only outliers and even those can be categorized as a first person platformer depending on who you ask.

Outside of EAD, which internal studio do they have which is capable of making a Metroid Prime or similar title?

If any studio can make another Donkey Kong is it not possible that any studio can make another Metroid with Nintendo's guidance?

Or they can just outsource it. Didn't have a problem doing that with Other M.

While I understand that they planned these things a certain way, it definitely was confusing they way they signaled everything. Holding back launch titles and all that didn't help.

a four person indie team had a more impressive announcement than everything at that show unless you REALLY like the Antonio Banderas gif. if we're going to rank the worst moments of VGX, Cranky Kong is nowhere near the bottom.

a four person indie team had a more impressive announcement than everything at that show, but nice try.

You're right, I'm not arguing that. But there's no reason a company such as Nintendo should have been outshined by that. Officially reveal Cranky through a Direct and save a major announcement for VGX.
