People love saying things like "competition breeds innovation", but... Where's the innovation in the Playstation vs 360 battle so far? There's XBox Live, which is debatable, and... And... Nothing. They're basically the same console. Are we talking "the XBox has nice triggers in the controller" innovation here? Are we talking "the PS vs XBox battle forced Nintendo to follow a new path with the Wii"? Something that adds nothing to the "why it would be bad MS and Sony joined forces" debate?

The gains from a PS720 console would be greater and more palpable than the gains from a continuation of the current status quo.

The truth is most core gamers HATE innovation. Nearly every gaming forum is proof of that.

Whatever whether it's xbox720, ps4, or ps720. We are gonna get the year multi-million dollar military shooters.

It's pretty odd that Microsoft would make 'defensive' domain grabs just for Sony. They're far from the only 'great MS partner'.

I can't think of too much that MS has gained from Sony, but thanks to the Xbox 360, Playstation fans enjoy an "XBLA" marketplace, downloadable demos, trophies, cross game invites and messaging, more and more PSN features as Sony tries to emulate XBL, just off of the top of my head.

I even recall Sony toying with the idea of charging for downloadable demos at the beginning of the generation. Without the competition of the 360, I shudder to think of what Sony would've slapped together for us under the presumption that we would buy anything they put out just because they're Sony.

Competition is and always has been a very, very good thing for consumers.

Sony and Microsoft work together in many areas. Ever been to Microsoft's campus in Redmond? Most people are using Vaios. This is not game-related.

I think the speculation is more about a total buyout of Sony than a collaboration exclusively on consoles.
It's crazy, but it sort of makes sense if Microsoft want to turn around their hardware business and take on Apple.

Yeah, I could see them wanting to control their own hardware production but they'd be getting a whole lot of unrelated stuff if they outright bought Sony, which is valued at over 10% of their market cap, not an insignificant purchase. Maybe they could pursue the electronics division but I don't see them gaining much from it. That said, I would love to see a console with Sony hardware and Microsoft software running it.

Damn, two year old thread?

And it appeared high on my list as if it had been recently updated.

Please have mercy, moderators, and just close a long deceased thread that I would have not bumped had I realized how old it was.

EDIT: Yes, I heard of Xperia Windows Phone talk yesterday, and did think the thread might be related. Still coping.

Xperia phones running Windows Phone?

God I hope not :(

My guess is it has to do something with PSM not working out? But nothing is settled along that line, if I recall.

BTW, nice 3 year necro.

Edit: There actually is talk of xperia phones using Windows going around.

Please do not let me serve on a jury. I am actually a crazy person.
who else had to read the thread until someone wrote 'are you seriously pulling PS3 has no games in 2011'?

Wow, this is big news! These two nemesis are merging right before our eyes. Think of the mobile gaming ecosystem that will come from this partnership. Sony and Microsoft have already stated that gaikai and Microsoft compute will be available on their respective mobile devices at some point. Now imagine a gaming phone that plays 360/ps3 titles and eventually current gen ips. 2014 is gonna be interesting!

Yeah, that happened to me as well. I bumped a 5-year-old thread about a restaurant review due to it appearing newer than it was.
