Sony won't offer option to disable PS4 DualShock 4 light bar

Magical LEDs that consume no energy. Just give people the option to disable it, seems like common sense to me. I have a plasma TV so I never liked this idea.

They won't?

Then i will. After i replace the analog sticks, I'm dropping a switch in there to disable the light bar at will.

I wish. I would have turned that dumbass LED off and I wouldn't have forced an unblockable notification for when the controller is set to turn off after a set time of inactivity.

[YOUR DUALSHOCK 4 IS OFF. I know you're watching Dexter on Netflix, but hey! YOUR DUALSHOCK 4 IS OFF.]

Considering how terrible Dexter gets in later seasons your dual shock is doing a public service.

sony is going to release a non-lightbar version of the ds4 ;)

i think someone else said that its not as easy as this...its shared power with some other components? could be wrong...trying to find that thread someone posted.

Yep, I think you are right because the USB connector is in the same location as the lightbar and that whole module is connected through the white strip.

That's a shame.

if you turn the controller off while watching Netflix it pauses the video

Not true. Let the controller time out and auto-shutoff. Then the video plays just fine. What does suck is that when you re-turn on the controller it asks you to log in before letting you control netflix.

Taping controllers, wedging controllers in sofa cushion cracks, and stuffing controllers in drawers are real suggestions? Heh.

Um, what if I want to shut it off manually? I'm not waiting for the thing to go to sleep every time. Well actually, I am currently, because Netflix pauses when I turn the fucking thing off.

This is all the more frustrating considering this functionality was there on PS3.

Light is used to:
1. tell if controller on. (ir wont work)
2. tel wich player the controller belongs to. (ir wont work)
3. give ambient light effects. (ir wont work)
4. tracking controller (ir is enough)

They should give option to turn it off.

yeah thats actually the most annoying thing to me. having to select my user account every time my controller auto shuts off.

that sounds like that "assing user to controller feature". Sounds inconvinient. Things are clearly yet to be fully thought out.

I really don't understand why they don't add the option for this??

As someone who doesn't own the camera, what's the fucking point of it then? I still can't believe the DS4 has such shit battery life and I would love to disable the light bar for even a bit more battery life.

Please Sony, just do this...

To everyone in this thread:

Set your controller to auto turn off after 10 minutes. Does not pause Netflix when it does.

Problem solved.

Also, like i've said previously, I think the people having a problem with the light on the TV is because of how you hold the controller. Set the Dualshock on a flat surface...the light actually points DOWN.

At least for me, when I play, I don't keep my elbows and the controller tilted up. So the light has always pointed downwards for me, and never been an issue.
So we've moved to the, "you're holding it wrong" argument?

No, it needs a disable option. It serves no purpose without a camera and it's obnoxiously bright.

I just don't see the need for a light like that on the controller. Along with the analog stick problems and short battery life, I can't say that I am looking forward to using the DS4.

I can sort of understand why they wouldn't want you to turn it off completely, but they should at least let you dim it. Unless it's made in such a way where it can only be at maximum brightness or off.

I personally have my PS4 set to turn the controller off after 10 minutes of inactivity, so I don't really have the issue with Netflix watching draining the battery. That means I have to press the PS button instead of X to pause what I'm watching, which is not quite as instant, but I can live with it. At least the DS4 reconnects way faster than the DS3 ever did, and once it's connected Netflix automatically pauses playback as the controller sign-in screen is shown. Preferable to letting the controller's battery run low from doing absolutely nothing.

As someone who doesn't own the camera, what's the fucking point of it then?

To see that the controller is on and to tell which player you are in local multiplayer games (the color of the lightbar is how you tell now, the concept of "controller 1/2/3/4" doesn't exist anymore).

You don't have a PS4 do you? When turning the controller off in Netflix the video pauses.

Step 1: Turn controller away from the TV
Step 2: Watch Netflix

I've never had an issue with the light bar distracting me. Maybe tonight I'll see if I can make it annoy me as much as it annoys some of you... perhaps I just need to be looking for it

So whats the story here?

Its funny to me the points in where Sony is willing and unwilling to bend to feedback

How utterly bizarre to be so stubborn about something like this

What if I want to shut it off manually once I start something to save battery power? Why should I have to leave the controller on with a huge bright blue light shining for no reason, for 10 minutes? It cannot be that hard to allow a user to turn off the controller without pausing playback. They did it on PS3.

I don't give a shit about the lightbar, I want a dedicated remote controller. HDMI controll with the TV remote is lackluster at best. Right now watching a blu ray is a pain in the ass.

No update to allow users to disable it or no update to allow developers to disable it? Or both.

Not allowing users to disable it completely can probably be justified but surely developers should be able to disable/dim it for ambient effects. Which would allow lovefilm, Netflix etc to turn it off as well.

So I thought in another interview he said devs have full control of the bar. Can we then focus on asking Neflix to turn off or dim the light during playback?

They originally said long time ago that devs can turn it off... Do not know if it is still the case.

Given they decided not to include a camera with every console this seems an odd choice.

Is it possible the design hardware wise just doesn't allow for it and they don't want to admit it? I've always felt they initially intended to follow MS in having a camera in every box and their odd stance on the lightbar has always had me thinking maybe the just didn't include and physical element to turn it off that could be controlled via the OS.

I mean if it could be turned off and given most games don't seem to need it (unless I'm missing something) then why wouldn't hey allow it and continue to look all consumer friendly vs flat out refusing?

Goddammit. Can we at least get an option to dim it? Fucker clearly shines through the tape I put over it and reflects in my TV.

It shines through and still reflects off the tv?

That's nuts.

The light doesn't reflect too much off my TV, but it reflects off my brother's so much he's decided to raise his TV a couple of feet to fix it. I...could never play like that, looking up at the screen to play. Not a solution I, or Sony, would recommend.

The light is really annoying when watching a movie. I basically have to put the controller under my couch to hide the light.

And I'm not certain how much the light kills the battery, but the DS4 battery is abysmal. Either I have a bad controller (well, other than a sticky L1 button and worn out analogs) or Polygon was being very generous with their 8 hours of battery life.

I feel like I'm having some weird luck with Sony products. I swear I'm getting more than 5 hours of battery life on my Vita with the wifi on and playing Persona 4 (5.5-6 hours probably, but I never let the battery run all the way out). It seemed like I could go 20+ hours on my several year old DS3 between charges, but my DS4 battery is downright pathetic.

I'm ordering another controller soon, so I'll see if that one performs better or not. Either way, being able to dim that light would have to help. Even if marginally so.

That's a shame. I guess they'll be packing the camera in every time in the future?

Yes, because there's no one on a gaming enthusiast message board who plays video games for hours at a stretch.

It lasts a decent while, I'm talking about the people who expect the charge to last a couple of days, that's just not going to happen if you are playing six-eight hours constantly.

Buy a second controller if it's really a problem.

This is one of the things they clearly got very wrong when reading the features that the X1 controller would have lol.

Damn and here I was wishing for an infrared controller for a console with a 500 dollar price tag that can't play games as well.
