What's going to fill up that 64gb if everything is streaming and apps are limited to 200mb?

Lots and lots of porn.

Not sure why they say Kodi will need to have a jailbroken AppleTV. Kodi is open source, just get a now free iOS developer account and side load it on your own device yourself. No jailbreaks necessary.

I just ordered one. 32 GB for 200 CAD.

I hope to use this to replace both my current apple TV and my PS3 for video streaming from my Mac (once the right apps come out- which should be soon)

Amazon isn't putting Instant Video on Apple TV? Well then, Amazon just lost $60 from me. I was planning on buying the Star Wars original trilogy on Instant Video, but I guess I'm going with iTunes instead.

It's a Disney Anywhere title, so you could buy it on Amazon and watch it on iTunes. :)

Except New Hope.

Decided not to do an online order. My mail goes through an admin office, so even if it arrived Friday it's entirely likely it would probably not get to me until after the weekend.
Gonna head on down to my nearest Apple Store on the morning and hope they have walk-in stock.

AU pricing is kinda crazy. I went for the 32GB model, but it's hard to see the 64GB model as good value when it's the same price as a PS4 here.

Ordered a 32 gb one about an hour ago. Supposed to be delivered by November 4th. Hoping it gets here sooner. Also hoping that this will finally be the streaming box that can truly be my one spot for all the streaming apps that I use and I can retire my XB1/PS4/PC as streaming devices.

people still don't understand on-demand downloading on iOS9.

apps are not limited to 200MB. Basic app bundles are limited to 200MB, requiring the remainder of the app being downloaded in the app's resource bundle (which is also where app thinning occurs). That's what on-demand it. On-demand can then further be augmented by making the assets able to be purged automatically or not. If not, they act like apps have always acted (showing up in space taken up by the app). If they can be purged, then as your OS looks to make room on the FS, any resource bundles able to be purged will be.

the only tvOS limit is the same as iOS in general... which is like 10-20GB or something

Where did you read that? In the past it hasn't been on Apple TV since Apple was making the apps and they wouldn't make a competitor app, but with this device the app store is almost like iPhone, which has an Amazon Instant Video app. All they have to do is modify the existing app to work with the new controls and match the rest of the Apple TV interface a little better.

They stopped selling Apple TV because they said "It didn't work well with Prime Video" whether that's a spat with app policies or they are trying to squeeze Apple it's pretty clear Apple TV is not getting Amazon's video apps anytime soon.

correct. It is HIGHLY unlikely that Amazon will put out Amazon Prime service on Apple TV.

However he was specifically talking about Star Wars, in which case it's covered under Disney Movies Anywhere. Though be warned that A New Hope isn't covered under DMA as Fox owns the distribution rights to that movie, and will for probably forever.

Cool thanks for the explanation

tl;dr - apple doesn't require app thinning and on-demand resource bundles on iOS (though are now highly encouraging it). They DO however require those from the start on tvOS.

Where? Do you have a link? They stopped selling old Apple TVs on Amazon.com because the old device doesn't currently have the Amazon app on it and that would cause "confusion". But as far as I know they've never hinted that they weren't going to port the Amazon app to it (which would then make them comfortable about selling the Apple TV). Amazon Instant Video is on other competing streaming devices such as the Roku 4 UHD and they still sell those on their site, so I don't see why they would stop porting it to other devices now.

If my main apps for media are player, plex, Netflix and Amazon prime, and I currently use my Xbox one to access most (with an iPad as remote/browsing when possible) - then are there any benefits going with Apple TV for media? wondering if AirPlay is useful (does that hand off to Apple TV so I can use my iPad for other things?)

If not then I'll hold off and see what happens in the app space - some apps and games might make it worth jumping on

I use what I'm about to describe rarely..... but, I "believe" you can airplay a PiP video to Apple TV, and then keep using your ipad with the PiP window showing it's airplaying..

as for air play.. honestly if you have an ipad and iphone (especially both), I would say I use air play almost as much as anything.. i.e. I'm watching something on TV, and browsing youtube or something, if I come across a video I'll air play it to the TV, then when it's done go back to watching what I was watching.

also this as a selling point may be YMMV, but the power consumption on the ATV3 was ridiculous. 4w under load or such.. My PS4 (my backup streamer) is ~80w while streaming.. Hoping this thing stays under 12w while streaming

Read the Official Apple TV Developer Guide.

There is no persistent local storage for apps on Apple TV. This means that every app developed for the new Apple TV must be able to store data in iCloud and retrieve it in a way that provides a great customer experience.

Along with the lack of local storage, the maximum size of an Apple TV app is limited to 200MB. Anything beyond this size needs to be packaged and loaded using on-demand resources.

I've read them :p

https://developer.apple.com/library...agement/Conceptual/On_Demand_Resources_Guide/

You can basically trick/force an app to not purge local files by not releasing the tag(s) in your app.

Basically nothing is changed with tvOS, except that they are FORCING on-demand resources and app-thinning, something that is (currently) optional on iOS. However you can still work around on-demand resources... well, I mean I guess not workaround... if you genuinely need the resource, you will continue to use it which will prevent it from being purged. If you don't continually need it, you CAN still hold the tag, preventing it from being purged, or you can work as it's intended to work and it will download again the next time it's called.

I get that Apple's language sounds scary above... but it basically describes on-demand resources. In a fully compliant app (thinning, on-demand, etc), the main bundle is only allowed to be 200MB. Everything beyond that is app thinning and on-demand, which are resource bundles outside of the main one.

edit - specifically I am talking about the following on that page

The operating system purges the cached resources associated with the asset pack from local storage.

An asset pack is eligible for purging when all of the associated tags are no longer retained by any request. The resources associated with a tag may remain on the device for some time before it is purged, including across app launches.

Making another request for the tags moves the lifecycle back to phase 1. You can influence the order of purging by setting the preservation priority for a tag. For more information, see Accessing and Downloading On-Demand Resources.

Setup question here.

If I get one of these new ones how can I set it up to send the HDMI video to my TV, and the audio to my speakers that only have 3.5mm connectors. I like to be able to listen to music without turning on my TV so daisy-chaining it through my TV is not an option. I have an Apple TV rigged to do the audio through the optical port at the moment, but I'm curious if I'm screwed without that on the new one.

Sounds like an A/V receiver with HDMI would get you sorted.

edit: or even better if you don't need all that.

Why is Apple pushing AppleCare for AppleTV? Applecare starting to seem a little sketchy like those BestBuy insurance/protection plans for hdmi cables...

not "screwed", but you'll basically need an HDMI splitter that transcodes to 3.5mm (or optical, as you say you have one?)

something like this? (analog)

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00G9FDJNA/?tag=neogaf0e-20

Yeah the optical is the shittiest step in the chain at the moment. I got a monoprice optical to 3.5mm box that makes a screeching noise if the Apple TV ever sleeps or turns off. Super fun when an auto-update happens overnight.

I'll probably just wait for these to hit the refurb store. Thanks guys.

ehhhhh.. I see your point.. the thing is, AppleCare is GREAT on most things in the store.. but something like this, yeah absolutely unnecessary. Still, AppleCare on a phone, laptop, or even iMac I would say is a pretty cheap investment, all things considered. But yeah, I didn't even glance at it at checkout.

I don't know, AppleCare has been worth it on pretty much every device I've purchased it for (phones and laptops), and I decided to get it in this case since it was fairly cheap and the open app store and storage space is kind of a unknown factor on the device. So now I feel secure that if something bricks the thing I'll have no problem getting it taken care of.

Bought the 64GB. Kind of regret going for 64 now, but I guess we'll see how real-world requirements play out.

Don't buy the extra Siri remote. Can't even connect two at once. Bizarre they're selling it day one and recommending it with purchase http://www.idownloadblog.com/2015/1...ouldnt-buy-an-extra-siri-remote-at-this-time/

I was not recommended to buy an extra Remote when I checked out from the web store. It looks like it's a listed accessory on the mobile App Store app that you linked to, which it probably shouldn't be, but I don't think there was language recommending that you purchase it.

They're selling it day one though in case someone breaks one as they waggle it too hard, drops it in their drink, whatever.

To your point though, I do think it's bizarre that Apple only allows one Remote to be paired to the TV. For the casual gaming audience, I imagine having another Remote in a drawer for friends would be much more palatable than pulling out a game controller. But then again I think most of Apple's decisions regarding games on the TV are really bizarre and seem out of touch.

The games they showed on the September Event (Beat Sports and Crossy Road), which are casual in nature, allow multiplayer using iPhones or iPod Touches. Since pretty much every future Apple TV owner probably already has one of those, it's not that big of a deal.

Is Friday the official release date or today? Going to check in on my local Apple Store today (just a few blocks from work). The website has it as "unavailable" for in-store pickup as of now.

Whaaaaaat. I can buy through Instant Video and be entitled to the iTunes version too??? How the heck do I set that up? (Though I guess if I'll need to buy it through iTunes regardless since A New Hope isn't a part of this.)

They were a bit cagey about that. The reality is, you can't simply pair an iOS device to the Apple TV and it will work as a controller. The developer must make a companion app for the iOS app store which interfaces with the TV app. Also, Apple removed the MultipeerConnectivity framework from tvOS, making things a lot harder to do that than needbe.

Go to DisneyMoviesAnywhere.com and link your iTunes/Amazon/Vudu/GooglePlay/Microsoft accounts to your Disney account, and then when you buy a qualifying movie on any of those services it should automatically unlock on all the services.

Went ahead and repurchased the Apple TV 3. Not willing to spend hundreds of dollars to upgrade my home theater system right now. Frankly, I realized the new Apple TV is not going to do anything different from what I want it to do so why upgrade.

Hopefully, the interface will suck a little bit less on the new box. It will also surely be a lot snappier of an experience with the dramatically increased hardware power and less frustrating control method.

I'm also hoping for some cool apps.

Seems crazy to buy the old model at this point. Maybe used or refurbished for like $30 it would be worth it, but the tech is just old now.
