ACES Game Studio - DEAD

Ensemble Studios - DEAD

Digital Anvil - DEAD

Hired Gun - DEAD

FASA Studio - DEAD

Indie Built - DEAD

Carbonated Games - DEAD

Wingnut Interactive - Basically DEAD

Mistwalker - Give It Another Year

Bungie - Running Away As Fast As They Can

Rare - Not Looking Too Good

Lionhead Studios - Fate Worse Than Death: Stuck With Molyneux

Xbox Live Productions - As Doomed as Carbonated Games

Turn 10 - It's Inevitable, Isn't It?

Wow, I've never seen it all compiled like this. I still can't believe that they let Ensemble fall apart.

As for Rare... the studio that made the games I grew up with has been gone for more than a decade. At this point, I don't care what happens to it.

It's amazing just how downright pathetic MS's in-house talent stable is when compared to the other platform holders, isn't it?

so if rare is dead, does that mean BLAST CORPS is dead?

did they own that?

because if so that's something worth lamenting, to be sure.

It's a shame that this had to happen to Rare. They're sitting on a gold mine in terms of IPs, and I'm sure lots of other publishers would love to have them. Unfortunately, they've been given the shit shovel, and are bound to create avatar and natal games for the rest of their days.

It's not like they were going to make a worthy sequel anyway.

It really pains me to see how Microsoft has sent Rare down the Loggo to do mainly avatar and casual shit. What a waste of all the IP and talent (a lot of which is leaving). Used to be my favorite company, hard to justify that now. Although I know a lot of people like it, I think wasting so much time and resources on Viva Pinata was a bad move, it's just such a niche game that could never find a market.

*sigh*

Perhaps Mr. Wise will find a home with Nintendo and compose for the next DK game.

In a perfect world... *double sigh*

Did anyone hear about the rumor that Tim Stamper is doing some sort of Rare revival?

David Wise isn't the only guy who left Rare recently and there has to be another reason besides Natal that a bunch of others like Chris Peil left too.

Also note that some Rare guys are unemployed since march 2009 according to their LinkedIN profiles, so I think someone has offered them a better job.

if they get on stage at the nintendo press conference at next year's E3 and announce that they've been working in secret on a brand new star fox or donkey kong country for wii, and that they have formed a new company, i would be super stoked. a guy can dream :D

I wonder if the Stamper brothers are doing anything, like at all, these days. :p Probably just spending those hundreds of millions they got out of selling Rare. :p

Nintendo already published the Martin Hollis game, Bonzai Barber. Not to mention Iwata is known for working together with 'old friends' like Sakurai who left Nintendo earlier.

Still, I don't care which 'side' these Rare guys are on, as long as they can use their talents in the industry.

There's this odd rumor that Tim Stamper has started something at the old Rare building. Chris has dropped off the map, and he was more in charge of the business side of things anyway. Tim used to be the tech guy.

This alone would be the stuff of legends.

"Please keep us all away from Microsoft! We'll be good, we promise!" :lol

yeah, i'd be happy if they just came together, and made a fun, character driven platformer with an awesome soundtrack. i need one of those soon. :D

How great would it be if they got together under a new name and went back to Nintendo? :D

(And put out DKC4 for DS.)

I don't think they'd go back to Nintendo but it would be a shame if this group was scattered all over the place.

Jesus Christ, Rare.

Just...

I don't know, i don't really know what to say.
You guys remember all the fuss when Rare was sold or when their 360 games proved to be not-so-popular, but at those times i still had faith, i enjoyed recent games like N&B.
I knew it wasn't the same Rare i loved on 64, but still...

Yeah, i know, cool story bro. [:(]
It's just to say... I lost all faith in Rare in these last few weeks of awful news regarding them.
Bitter tears.
I guess this time it really is over.

That will probably teach MS that buying companies left and right might not be a good decision.

Since were not seeing new games from Rare that I was expecting this gen I'll be happy if they just keep releasing HD versions of their old games.

Come on Jet Force Gemini!

why don't you think they'd go back?
I'm not sure if the Rare tech junkies fit with Nintendo. I'm also not sure if the Tim Stamper rumor is legit, but still it's worth mentioning and why else would the Rare guys leave the company? Wasn't Wise their first composer?

Note: Iwata seems to hate the N64 so I doubt he'd bring back the dream team, unless the 'Former Rare, Genyo Takeda meet up' is the reason for his recent comments about the N64.

Really sad, David Wise is a fantastic composer.

If I had to guess, the games he was working on probably kept getting cancelled and he finally threw up his hands and said "fuck this I'm quitting". When you think about it, the last console game he did the music for was Starfox Adventures back in 2002. Everything else he's been doing was handheld ports of the DKC titles.

Mistwalker and Turn 10 are still quality! The other 12 studios, though... yeah.

:/

The other
Mistwalker? Really?
Mistwaker has devolved into a production house specialising in remarkably mediocre DS games, and I don't think they're making much money from that plan. :p

i doubt that Iwata not liking Nintendo would stop him from hiring really good talent from a company they used to have a close relationship with.

i mean, miyamoto made mario 64 and he still works for nintendo :lol

That and Rare don't make DS games any more.

Well, I just did some research. Stamper owns THENOIDS.COM since 2007.

Registrant:
Tim Stamper
Manor Farmhouse
Church Street
Twycross, Warwickshire CV9 3PJ
GB

So yeah, he still owns the place.

http://whois.domaintools.com/thenoids.com

He also owns eight other web domains. Several of them were registered in 2009. So he's busy. I can't see what the domains are however. Maybe someone could help.

No seriously, how in the fuck does Microsoft squander so much real talent like this? This is like the reverse Nintendo "Kiss of Death", if your dev team is "acquired" by Microsoft, just get ready to bail out in a few months time.

Looking at it like that, I guess Rare was double screwed. :lol

Edit: Rare revival, wut? No seriously guys, don't do this to me.

that would be a dream come true. rare makes good games but back when nintendo was helping them they made some fantastic stuff. plus rare has always made games that are more aimed at a nintendo audience. lets hope the revival company happens and they find their way back to nintendo.

Every "second party developer" that leaves them almost always falls apart, has their reputation tarnished, or runs into some unexpected trouble some time after the initial departure.

See: Silicon Knights, Factor 5, etc.

So I don't get it. Someone explain it to me.

MS spends all this money getting these first party studios together. Assembling a lineup of quality exclusive software. Thanks to these games in part, the X360 is where it is today. Then they fire them or the team leaves or whatever.

X360 is still in a fierce software battle with PS3 for every exclusive they can get. What good does it do MS to lose these studios who could be making kickass exclusive 1st party games in many genres to battle the PS3 1st parties? It's one thing if X360 had one the generation and was so far ahead MS could fire everyone and sit back and enjoy profits, but they're in the middle of a major heated battle. This would be the dumbest time to lose 1st party titles.

What is going on?
