Fallout 4 - High Resolution Texture Pack is out.

Side by sides are pretty much necessary. Things look smoother, but not enough to make me want to DL this. The game still doesn't run great on PC as it is, and I have a 1070 8GB card. Some portions of downtown Boston will randomly cause frame drops, or certain random environment objects being hit by a melee attack will cause massive stuttering for a few minutes, usually only fixable by exiting the game.

We are talking about Fallout 4, not Uncharted 4.

lol some of UC4's rock textures look like Fallout 3 so lets not start this.

Yes the rest of the game looks amazing but some things like the rocks break the entire thing so... Please don't get me started.

Here's a couple.

A couple more.
Yeah, that definitely looks better to me. I've looked through the nexus and it looks better than 90% of the stuff there. Even if it is just the same textures at higher res (doesn't look upscaled to me like Skyrim was but I'm no expert).

The good thing is though that it looks like it covers just about everything and that's great for cohesiveness. Most if not all of the mods on the nexus only touch a few things here and there and then you end up downloading multiple peoples mods that don't mesh the greatest together. This is why complete texture overhauls are so nice when done with the same vision in mind.

Even if you don't care for continuity it's still nice because you will still be able to load up your other texture mods over this and benefit from the rest of the textures that your mods miss so far.

I remember there was one mod in Skyrim that was basically a complete overhaul but the textures weren't the greatest quality but still better than the base. It covered more than any other and it was great because it filled all the little holes that my other texture mods didn't and it stopped the overall look from being broken so badly by the base textures that where even worse.

Also, this is free...

Only if you want to be extremely sick, extremely quickly.

I mean they seemed very serious about doing it, so I'd assume they'd take all of the proper steps even if it takes fully redesigning a lot of it to be a comfortable VR game.

I hope it can be done because even with the negatives the game has, no VR game has such size and detail to explore with such high production values. I really want some more of those in VR.
From what I've heard RE7 is the first AAA that's done it, I don't want it to just stop with them.

So far I've seen 5GB VRAM usage tops with this pack so I'd say that 6GB cards owners should be ok with it, maybe even 4GB cards will be able to pull it off.

Can't say that I'm impressed with the quality though. But I don't really remember how the game looked previously so I can't judge if it's a good update or not.

we need some comparisons.

I see no way of turning the new textures off but deleting the DLC completely so that'll take some time.

Judging from screen people are taking, texture look a bit clearer / more detailed.

But man, having not played this game since it first game I forgot how ugly it is. Bethesda's engine is just so dated at this point.

Either you're rehosting Steam's compressed images or your imgur account isn't set up to host high quality images. In Steam settings -> In-Game, check 'Save an uncompressed copy'.
Thanks, I did both things you mentioned. Still a bit blurred from what I see...is it better?

Don't flip out. That's just a very random location (where I logged out about 2-3 months ago). I took a screenshot before downloading the DLC and right after it finished installing. I waited some time to make sure that every texture loaded.

So far it looks like the fanmade are sharper, takes a lot less space and isn't as much strain on the system if their spec recommendations are anything to go by. Not that I expected better after Skyrim's hq texture pack.

oh it's applied as dlc or an addon? not a menu toggle? oh, that's weird.

Yeah, it's shown as a DLC in FO4 and there's no apparent toggle for it anywhere. The texture quality option in the launcher is topped out on "Ultra" - I believe it was the same previously.

...But 58GBs...

Surely they must show up somewhere?

you can see a very slight difference but it's not much. the back of the armor and the wheel looks sharper, but apart from that, meh. maybe in a busier town with a lot of varying textures will be more noticeable.

Idk. Currently I'm teleporting around and checking. So far Vram useage never went above 6gb [@1440p], but system ram is now slightly over 8gb. Performance is the same (more or less).
The wood textures seem to be better here, but maybe it's just placebo.

Oh wow. Good eyes. The wheel does indeed look a tiny bit sharper, I absolutely missed that...

I haven't finished DL'n it yet, but check your mod manager or the game's crappy mod manager. There should be an esp that you can toggle on and off. Just like other mods/dlc

Not done any character/model comparison shots yet, I expect these to be where you see the greatest upgrades. Definitely a noticeable improvement, but a very slight one. I'm a texture whore so gladly welcome this pack, although for many I can see a 55GB download this may not be worth it. Personally, I will take it !

Edit - To add, game still seems to run well for me (i5 2500K, 16GB Memory, RX 480 8GB), but only had a quick go, will need a longer play through.

As I've said, I see no way of disabling it short of removing the DLC in Steam properties. I don't have any 3rd party mod managers for FO4 installed so...

Okay, this is much better - at least there's some difference. No idea if that difference worth a 60GB d/l though as it seems pretty minimal.

It seems to work fine with my 980ti. The VRAM usage in afterburner can go up around 5500mb. Can't say I notice much difference in how it looks especially since I haven't played the game in months.

I think it looks pretty nice, the download size is pretty crazy but it seems like it cleans up the image well enough to be worth downloading to me. Hopefully it will motivate me to finally get through all the DLC's.

So far i'm struggling to see why the spec requirements are so high, maybe someone smarter than me can tell me why.
Game runs like shit as it is.

A game on as outdated an engine as this needs high spec reqs for a texture pack comparable to textures in modern games because it's incredibly poorly optimized. The devs are also not well known for their ability to optimize their games either way. Some of the fixes I've seen made in mods are crazy. Like things that no other devs would have gotten so wrong.

Oh my god. There's basically no difference. Seeing the album standalone, I guess I misremembered how vanilla FO4 looked. Guess it looked better than I thought, and this texture pack really doesn't do much.

Lol those are even worse than I anticipated. That looks like something you can do with a sharpening filter. 60GB for that? Lmao.

What a pathetic difference.

This reminds me of the PS3 vs 360 days where people would count the number of bushes in the grass to say that the 360 version looked miles better. In fact, it's worse than that.

Just tried wondering around a few places and my old R9-290X 4gb card seems to run it fine. Nice free upgrade.
With all dlc I'm sure I saw 94gb....

The GTX 1080 as a minimum GPU never made any sense for a simple texture pack. If you don't notice any difference with your RX 480, Bethesda once again messed up their minimum specs. They are so bad at this. Every single time they publish system specs there's something wrong with them.

Can anybody compare the OG graphics to this new HD patch? I wonder if it really changes the way the game looks. I remember Fallout 4 looking like trash when it was released. The game looked severely dated.

I play it fine on ultra with my GTX 670. I was scared to see they requiring a GTX 1080. So, I guess it will work?

Didn't want to risk, it's 58 gb. lol

Looks like my current desktop will run this just fine then. May have to give this a go this week.

Installed it. Makes the game look noticeably nicer but running on a 6700k, 32gb ram, and a 1080 it stutters and stalls every time I turn around or look in a new direction, like it's pausing to load in the new textures or something.

Maybe they can fix that with patches or I need an even beefier computer, or possibly its a glitch with mod compatibility (also running the vivid textures) but it's sort of unplayable.

Im laughing my ass off here for those comparison shots.
Poor people with datacaps who will be terribly disappointed when they finally have finished DL and see 95% the same game...

Oh wait its Bethesda, it should be known to get disappointed by them already.

What I don't get is the severe lack of good mods for FO4. FO3 and Skyrim had killer texture mods pretty quickly. The mesh mod for Skyrim is game changing. FO4 mods are lacking in a lot of those areas.

I think there's a bit of placebo affect that will happen for some, especially with how big the dl was (more biggerer = more betterer amiright?). I downloaded the HD texture pack and swore it looked way better, but after seeing the well done comparison shots by Ogs I'm now laughing my ass off. And lol at now needing a 1080 for this hahaha. What a waste of bandwidth.

I finally have it downloaded, yup the games crappy mod manager doesn't have it listed. I don't use it so I wasn't sure about it, I use a mod organizer. But its easy enough to enable/disable it without re-downloading it all.

go into

Steam\steamapps\common\Fallout 4\Data

rename
DLCUltraHighResolution.esm
to something like
DLCUltraHighResolution.esm.HR

the game will ignore the hi res data. To enable the hi-res stuff just rename the ESM back to what it was.

OK this is kinda moronic according to steam my fallout 4 has an update which is 54.8gbs and is obviously these fancy smancy textures. Now I don't have 60 odd gbs to waste on an update that consists of nothing but fancy textures I can't even run on my aging PC.

It would have been nice if Bethesda or Valve could've released this in the form of free dlc rather than a bloody mandatory patch that just sits there blinking at me moaning about disc space.
