Kendrick Lamar halts performance after white fan he invited on stage says N-word

PLEASE STOP REFERENCING THAT SPECIFIC FORUM. Under normal circunstances this wouldn't be a problem but let's just avoid any misunderstandings. THANK YOU.
"No one said that!"

*shows evidence that someone said that*

"Well, I'll just move the goalpost!"
"Era is saying this!"

"No they aren't."

"Here's proof!"

"Oh...one person said that out of hundreds of posts. I see."

"LOL OWNED!!!!"

See people! When you bring up what's going on at another forum, you subject some of us to shit we couldn't care less about. Then you invite people from that site who only have accounts here to defend those forums into our discussions. Please stop.

Okay, last post on the subject.

You said that NO ONE said that. I showed that two people (at least) did.

You used an absolute statement, not me. I can debunk your absolute statement with a single counterexample.

Maybe Kendrick shouldn't invite white people up to sing songs with the N word in it. From the audio of that clip, it seems the one word that came across to the crowd clearly was the "N" word, she said it very pronounced when rapping it. Some people in the crowd it seems became rather hostile quickly.

The one thing I know, hip-hop isn't only for black people, and suggesting so IS rather racist. The music is itself another creature outside of the race debate, so if one is going to include that word in their music, then they are making the word inclusive, as that music itself belongs to an international multicultural and multi-ethnic group. Sadly, the word has been a constant part of the institution of hip-hop, and seems to be something black hip-hop artist feel inclined they must include. That I find strange as well.
This thread shows just how much white people actually "want" to use the "N" word in their daily lives publically.
No, it doesn't, but there is always a person who has to make this post when people try to have discourse about the subject.

He didn't get mad. He politely gave her a chance to give it another try.

She was able to sing along while being respectful. It wasn't a horrible request, and it's certainly not difficult thing to do.

Let's be outraged, though.
He invited her on stage to do exactly what she did, and then shamed her in front of a huge crowd for doing exactly what she was supposed to do.

This whole, "Only black people are special enough to use this word and anyone else who uses it in any context whatsoever need to be punished" mentality is absolutely infantile. Only a child would feel special about having a special pass to say a word and then throw a tantrum whenever someone else uses it. Maybe find some new things to feel special about.

Also, I tend to agree that it is stupid for white people or non blacks in general to use the word, especially if they are not from the hood. But anyone who grew up in the hood knows blacks don't just call each other nigga, they call everyone nigga, my nigga, this nigga, that nigga, fuck that nigga etc; so to act like it's some closely guarded word withon the black american lexicon is pure bullshit, and so is the phony outrage.

What if someone black doesn't know when a particular white person saying the word means ill intent or not?

Yes it does. Many white people are talking as if they want to equally be able to say the word or make all black people stop using the word.

If you put a word in every cool movie, cool song, cool people is saying it all day in the street... people are going to use it.
If you don't want people to use it, stop using it, stop uploading videos using it on youtube, stop saying it on the radio, stop doing commedy specials about the word...

It's just that easy.

It's like a father cursing all day in front of his kid and then getting mad at the kid when he curses. If you don't want the kid to curse, don't curse around him.

I was just making sure you talked to all the black people before you made a statement on the entire races behalf.
But clearly you are of sound mind and have done extensive research on how "selfish" black people are.
Keep up the good fight too sir.

Rap hasn't been cool since 1998ish-2000ish to be honest.

During its rise in the 80's into the 90's it was what took the place after the death of punk.
It was the big "fuck you" to society.

Late 90's saw the rise of TRL, saw Puff Daddy sampling the fuck out of pop songs and wearing a shiny suits.
Every rapper decided they were also in the mafia.
Nas went from Illmatic to a pink suit doing a scene from Casino.
Meth and Red made comedy movies..

Rap is pop music.

Rap is about as counter culture and subversive as the 10 year old white girls it appeals to.

I'm sorry... I never liked main stream pop shit.
Buying a rap album is like buying a Imagine Dragons album. Packaged, mainstream pop.

Your gonna have stupid white people saying the N bomb since rap is pop and not counter culture anymore.

You dont get a Lambo and $500k teeth unless every Becky gets to say Nigga.

No thanks.

So because I'm white and I repeat what the rapper sings I can't say it I'm sorry but I'm singing it. I'm not going to be on a train bursting it out or anything

If I use cracker in a song I hope he doesn't say it back to me either if that's the case.

I wonder if Kendrick is making a really deep statement with this. I mean, I really don't see how this is even the same as singing it to yourself listening to the album at home. This is literally the artist himself pulling someone onto his stage to share in his art, to literally become one with his performance, sharing this part of his journey and expression, an open invitation of friendship and trust. It is nonsensical to bring someone that far in and then say "but not this part, for this part you are still tainted by your ethnic heritage and are counted as other and disallowed."

...but isn't that the sort of thing that very often happens to minorities?

I wonder if he did it on purpose, since he did it very gently.

I thought about this today. Kendrick Lamar took the kid's money. He's profiting from this word. If you enterprise this word, you're done. You take it mainstream and it's no longer a community word.

You can say that it's artistic expression and that's fine. Art belongs to everybody. The actions of speech do have consequences. If you elect to normalize the word and put it out on front street, the consequences are that some people may say that word that you didn't plan for.

I don't care, personally. I don't say it, nor do I mind if a group uses it exclusively within their group. Sell it as mass media, your control over the word is forfeit.

Say it, don't say it, if you're offended by it then you are, if you aren't then you aren't.

I came from Detroit and spent some time in the not so favorable areas of the city. I would say it's a 50/50 situation, either people do get offended or they don't. If they do a simple apology is issued and the day carries on, if not, no one says a word. (This is the use of the soft a, where it as meant as an acknowledgement of companionship or greeting, not the hard R. Everybody gets pissed at the hard R.)

I see both sides of the argument. I think the important thing here was that both parties handled the situation very well. Obviously the fan meant no disrespect, and Kendrick understood that and dialed down the situation like a civilized individual.

I believe the appropriate correction was made and pardons were issued on both sides.

This is a good example of how to handle situations like this and really should be text book case in future ones.

So many of us want to share in culture with each other but can be difficult to appropriately do so in certain situations. Especially when it comes to music, like others in this forum said they say it when they sing because it is in the song, I know I do. I love Rap/Hip-Hop and catchy songs do utilize the word often which, if excluded can ruin the overall feel of the song. I remember when Nicki Minajs Anaconda came out and the radio replaced the word dick with schtick, and it completely bothered me.

Now I'm not saying everyone should go around saying, but in the context of situation and its use in music for a fan doing a sing-a-long, I don't see the need to crucify the girl. Anyone that thinks she should be may need a moral compass check, IMO.

This always amuses me since they both come off sounding the same or at the very least are extremely close sounding.
(Unless it's different in America and they have a silent G or something?? Niggag?)

But Niggargh and Niggerrr must cause some confusion, should have just ended it with a 'Z', we all know the use of 'Z' has been cool since Dragonball.

I think the distinction between the two is rather apparent in American dialect. I don't often hear anyone say the hard R, unless they are being blatantly racist.

But yeah I understand your confusion. No Blame on your part, America is a strange,... strange, land indeed. :)

I mean it really does depend on the context but yeah basically. Its a very touchy subject on free speech/hate speech.

Edit: You know what, we are all missing the point.... M.A.A.D. City ... it's a bomb ass song.

If you invite a white girl on stage during a song like this you better be sure your audience knows what irony is.

Is it? I don't see other ethnicity group using their slur words in songs as such. Then again rap is more of an insulting/ego trip so it makes sense the word is used so freely in it.

In Australia, we don’t pronounce the letter ‘r’ if it’s on the end of a word, so ‘nigger’ would be pronounced as ‘nigga’. Therefore, there is no racist form of the word in Australia.

Not that I've noticed, but I could be wrong. As an Asian who in no way speaks for the entire community, I've been called a gook, chink, slope, zipperhead, and commonly field questions about eating dogs. I've never liked it, so I never saw the need to put those words in song or ease the pain by referring to my brother as my slope. I've never seen anybody in my community try it, but it's possible. Most people in my group seem to think that hurtful words like that shouldn't be repeated, so we repeat them as seldom as possible.

Apologies to anyone who's uncomfortable with those terms.

No white person should ever feel comfortable to say it, whether it's in a song they love or not. If a black artist chooses to use language that has been used to denegrate & oppress their race, that's their perogative to find and use the context that it works within, but us white people have no right to say it. Even this still being a discussion is idiotic. Show some understanding, just because you're white doesn't mean you get the keys to everything.

Think you used the wrong p word there, should have said its their privilege.

Its not idiotic to have this discussion. Its idiotic to segregate words based on skin color. Especially when the word in question is not the same word that was used to denigrate and oppress any race. She didn't say Nigger. She said nigga, which to my knowledge was not used in the same manner as nigger.

Yes it does. Many white people are talking as if they want to equally be able to say the word or make all black people stop using the word.

Yeah sorry but White people done get the keys to everything unless you are talking about more alcoholics, more people in prison, more people defaulting on loans, more people going bankrupt, more people on social services, more people, thought policed by perpetually offended on someone else's behalf White people, on antidepressants and more people on opioids.

Great times to be White I tell you... keys everywhere I'm opening doors and I just can't stop winning.

What if someone black doesn't know when a particular white person saying the word means ill intent or not?

What would it matter? You don't know if another black person is saying it for the reasons you think they are. They could hate the word and thing you a simpleton for interacting with it. You could be nothing more than a thought experiment to them.

How do we know anything about anyone's intent? We keep pushing the conversation. You'll eventually realize they are fucking with you or they are real with you. You judge them worthy of continued interaction then.

The girl just posted some rappers song lyrics on her Instagram and that constituted a hate crime according to a judge simply because the investigating police officer said the N-word was always offensive to her. A democratic society cannot function effectively on the basis of one rule for thee another for me.

I hope so. White people need to take it back. Stop stealing our words. Or just stop getting upset when people use it. Imagine if there was a word white people said that black people couldn't. There would be riots.

Why would anybody feel uncomfortable about a word that's so widely used? If you wanna be one of those white guilt people then go ahead but I have nothing to be guilty about. And btw NEVER listen to this song or your might have a panic attack. That goes for all people that feel uncomfortable about the word 'nigga'. You have been warned.

There are 2 ways out of this: Either artists stop using the word in their records, movies and media or the word is going to be normalized.

If you keep promoting a word all around the world and expect people not using it, you are fooling yourself.

In my country (spain), some kids and young people are using it just to sound cool. Don't get me wrong, this isn't widespread, use isn't common, but it's there.

Recently I did a favor to a friend of mine and she said "my nigga" meaning to say thank you. I am a spanish guy, she is a spanish girl, we are both white, we are speaking spanish and she said "my nigga" to say thank you. And she is a leftist: she is pro refugees, pro animal rights, against guns, against war, thinks trump is a racist monster...

Do you understand how powerful music, movies and media are? If the word is getting here, it's only reasonable to think its use is going to get more and more widespread in the US.

But she didn't say it to anyone whose black, especially one who she didn't now. Enough black people won't be comfortable with others saying the word, because they are equally as malicious as they are sincere. Racism sucks.

This is such bullshit. White people not being able to say the N word is modern day reverse Jim Crow. This generation is sickening. Black people have their own TV channel, their own month, and their own secret word that can't be used by whites just because of the color of their skin. The oppressed have become the oppressor. I thought the goal was equality? We can't give special privelages to one race and deny them from another. This is affirmative action on a whole new level.

Reality right now is that she has to shut down all social media accounts and go on a "vacation" far away. Is she receiving death threats? I can put down real money on, YES, hundreds.
Maybe she should be fired from her job too. If she has kids in school they should be prepared to be beaten up every day from now on.

Social media will sentence her justly for her sin /s

20 seconds later he throws you under the bus and your life is destroyed forever.

If a word is so bad that certain people can’t say it (which is correct), then nobody should be saying it. That’s the only reasonable solution if you want an actual cohesive mixed society.

Having a word be completely tame when one person says it and the upmost evil when another does just isn’t going to work. This should be obvious.

The word has no place in anyone's vernacular. This notion that only black people should be able to say it is idiocy at its finest. Not to mention that it would be impossible to enforce (how the hell do you determine if someone is black or white) but the word serves no purpose in civilization.

Lamar should have said "no white people at my concerts please" if he really wanted to enforce such an inane stipulation.

I like rap, but I have a difficult time taking any of their messages seriously when the language has to be littered with such a stupid hateful word
