sp_head_story_umsi.png

Killzone 3 picks up immediately after the ending of Killzone 2 and follows the previous game's main protagonist, Tomas "Sev" Sevchenko, a Special Forces operative fighting for the ISA against the Helghast Empire. The game begins shortly after Sev successfully defeats Colonel Radec and the hot tempered Rico Velasquez kills the Helghast dictator, Emperor Scolar Visari.

The death of their dictator has left the Helghast Empire in a state of internal struggle. Now, Sev and his comrade Rico are trapped in the cross-fire between the various political factions without any reinforcements and are left to fight alone in order to escape as the ISA struggles to regroup its forces and stop a Helghast invasion of Earth. Sev and Rico must use their wits and skills to not only get out alive, but save their homeland.

  • 86 - Metacritic

  • 10 - Destructoid
I don't think the PlayStation 3 has ever had quite such a rounded, satisfactory package as this, with this level of polish, refinement and pure, simple, unpretentious action.
  • 9.4 - NZGamer
Killzone 3 is one spectacular game - sure, it's really only doing the basics in terms of gameplay, but it does it in the balls-to-the-walls, damn-the-expense, ultra-intensity manner that only a top-shelf, big-budget, mega-spectacular can.
  • 9.4 - GameTrailers
The revamped controls result in the best Killzone experience yet, and the thoughtfully-conceived multiplayer elements will keep you in the game until you've maxed out and mastered its finer points.
  • 9.0 - GamesRadar
Correcting seemingly every complaint critics had about Killzone 2, Killzone 3 is visually impressive, relentlessly entertaining and far more fun than we expected. This is everything a good sequel should be.
  • 8.5 - Gamespot
Killzone 3 isn't the game it could have been, but when it comes to capturing the madness of larger-than-life planetside battles, few games do it better.
  • 8.5 - IGN
Along with its fun multiplayer, Killzone 3 is so enjoyable because it's not just a shooter, it's an experience. Guerilla has crafted scene after gorgeous scene that made me feel like you're a part of a brutal, human war that is somehow fantastic in setting but also eerily reminiscent of the wars we see on TV.
  • 8.3 - 1UP
It's definitely one of the better multiplayer games available on PlayStation 3 and easily one of the best-looking games available to console gamers today.
  • 8.0 - Eurogamer
Fans of Killzone 2 will love the improved multiplayer, but may find that the single-player side of things has lost a lot of its identity. It's always polished and breathlessly paced, but it no longer offers a distinct change of pace from the rest of the shooter herd.
  • 7.0 - Edge Magazine
Previous instalments in this technically strong but creatively lacking series have been one-note, papering over a lack of originality with a hefty dose of shock and awe. Killzone 3, by contrast, attempts to wage a more varied war. It succeeds, just, by offering a tour of locations both more visually interesting and diverse than its forebears, but it all still depends heavily on the brutal impact of the shooting at its core.

  • Guerrilla Warfare
    • Guerrilla Warfare is a standalone multiplayer mode similar to classic Team Deathmatch: You and your teammates must try to kill as many of the opposing team as you can before the timer runs out.

  • Warzone
    • Killzone 3's multiplayer experience revolves around Warzone, which put two teams against each other in a battle where the focus lies on teamwork and diversity. Each Warzone can feature up to five different Missions, which present factions with different Mission Objectives to achieve in order to ultimately win the Warzone.
      • Bodycount: Rack 'em and stack 'em! In this classical Team Deathmatch scenario, the Helghast and ISA face off in a grueling head to head battle. Your goal is to rack up as many enemy kills as you possibly can, instilling nothing but fear and mayhem in the minds of the opposing faction-members. And show no mercy, as its kill or be killed in this cut throat fight, where only the toughest and strongest will survive.
      • Search & Retrieve: Quick! The race is on to capture the Mission Objective and return it back to a specified location in one piece before the enemy gets his greedy hands on it. There's only one additional problem: you'll have to find the Mission Objective first! Successfully completing Search and Retrieve missions not only demands superior reconnaissance skills, but it also relies heavily on your ability to work as a team and protect the Mission Objective while transporting it back to your Faction's Return Area that is usually located in very hostile territory.
      • Search & Destroy: Take no prisoners! In the Search and Destroy mission it's about leaving nothing but mayhem and destruction. The attacking faction's goal is to destroy the Mission Objective with two strategically placed explosive charges. The goal for the defensive faction is to prevent you from doing so. Mind you, after taking control of the Mission Objective and planting both charges, the defending faction still has time to disarm the explosives, so make sure you stick around to ensure you successfully complete the mission.
      • Capture & Hold: Playing Capture and Hold is like walking the tight rope: if you don't have the balance it takes, you will unmercifully fall. And mind you, this battle requires a well-balanced skill-set if you want to be victorious. Use your best offensive tactics to capture designated Mission Areas with your faction and stand your defensive ground as long as possible, because the longer you occupy Mission Areas, the closer you get to victory.
      • Assassination: Have you got what it takes to survive the deadliest of assassination squads? Better get moving then! But remember to stay close to your buddies as they're putting their lives on the line to save yours. In this serious game of cat and mouse, one player of the defending faction will be selected to become the target of assassination by the attacking faction. After being selected, the target has 30 seconds to move into a safe position. If is killed within this time frame, another player is automatically selected to become the new target. However, if three selected players are killed within this time frame, the defensive side loses the mission. After the 30 second window closes, the objective for the defending faction is both simple and hard: prevent the target from getting killed.

  • Operations
    • Operations is a new multiplayer campaign which aims to deliver a more cinematic, story-based gameplay experience, similar to that of Killzone 3’s single-player mode. It consists of a sequence of linear mini-missions. The top performers on the winning team will appear in the cinematics.

  • Botzone
    • Botzone is an offline multiplayer mode ideal for those looking to get to grips with the controls, the weapons or the map layout before going up against live players. Each of the aforementioned multiplayer modes can be played offline, against CPU-controlled opponents.

?

As far as I was aware the ISA was concerned about protecting vector and other borderland worlds while the core planets inc earth were protected by a separate force (ISCA?) which was so humongous it could bitch slap either ISA or helghast down if it could be arsed.

Great OP, thumbs up!
I wasn't too fond of Killzone 2 and I got a lot of headache by the Field of Vision.

But so far Killzone 3 is appealing to me with great multiplayer, bot practice and a more diverse singleplayer campaign. I haven't had any headache here yet but I'm not too far into the campaign yet.

Awesome OP, I wasn't really looking forward to this game until I played the demos, not only they improved the graphics I really like the new control improvements as well, day 1 for me.

I liked KZ2 campaign but were people really asking for the levels to be 10x bigger? What does that mean anyway? 10x longer? 10x bigger but it's not like you'll be able to get to certain areas?

That "increased autoaim and lock on" better be an option, don't know why anyone would ever list those things as a positive. Having more responsive controls negates the need for that bullshit.
