I'm curious about how the game actually plays, something that hasn't been given enough exposure in previews as opposed to visuals.

Most impressions have said the motion sensing system actually works well.

I really hope this review is the first of many good ones. I know that there are some here that do reviews and given your previous impressions, I expect little out of you. And to those of you still hating on Lair, I am very glad this review will do at least something to shut you up. I've always been really hyped about his game, and to see a positive (not just positive, but seemingly very positive) review is very encouraging, especially given the unusual amount of hating the game has recieved.

Thank you for the review Takuhi.

the game is pushed back to October

Where was this announced? I thought it was still on target for next month?

It's coming out in October for Europe, this seems to have confused so many people, as it's till on schedule for an August 14th release in America.

Bad art or not, I meant that Halo 3's art style has nothing in common with Lair's. Whereas the dragons in Lair look suspiciously similar to Locusts.

:lol Or maybe the Locusts look suspiciously similar to Godzilla!

And a legitimate source is?

Definitely not PLAY magazine. Hell I'd actually put Famitsu over them in terms of trustworthy reviews.

I mean no disrespect to LAIR as I think it looks incredible but PLAY isn't fit to review different brands of toilet paper let alone videogames.

Also for the written impressions? If there's one thing I have learned then it's the score means nothing no matter which site it comes from and one can only rely on the combined written impressions.

If any, the score are only good for console wars.

Mmm...Locusts.

If only Lair dragon designs were like locusts, they'd be more colorful. LOL, amirite, Son of G? highfive!

The written impressions are encouraging, and moreso since it was Casey and not some of the more...frothing...writers at Play, but it wouldn't be the first or last time that Play has glossed problems because they enjoyed a game so much.

Play (as an overall magazine) loves almost everything. It's a genuine love to be sure, but it's not particularly conducive to useful reviews.

I'm still holding out hope that it's not very good. I'll choose to ignore this review, thank you very much.
If play loves it, then it might not be good. 9.5 for Sonic 2006, 8.5 for Bullet Witch, 9.0 for Monster Madness... and all three of those games were torn a new one elsewhere. Never forget.

Yeah but think on this for a second.

What kind of writtern impressions can you imagine reading for their Sonic next-gen review?

"The load times aren't the greatest"
"There's a bug every now and then"
"The controls take a little while to get used to"

Or let's say Bullet Witch:

"Framerate isn't perfect but it's definitely playable"
"The aiming feels off sometimes but not always"
"The main character is hot. If you don't find her attractive it's probably because you're already dead!"

I just made all of those up but hmm. The reviews in PLAY are written while completely blinded by fanboyism whether it's for(Sonic) or against(GTA) the game in question. While blinded Dave(or most of the other staff for that matter) doesn't seem interested in being completely accurate. "The load times aren't the greatest" in the real world actually means "The load times are the worst of any game ever." and "The aiming feels off sometimes but not always" could really mean "The aiming is never 100% and it makes the game very frustrating".

It doesn't help that most of the quotes are basically made up of stuff like "ooh this looks so good" and such. Play has created such a stigma about their reviews that I can't even take their word on the framerate. For all I know it could run as well as Panzer Dragoon on the Saturn.

And again I am not knocking LAIR. It should be a great game and I expect it to score 8s & 9s or hell even 10s from other reviewers. But Play? Forget it. They should just pack every issue with a syringe so you can inject the salt straight into your veins.

Takuhi's impressions sound great though. I'd rather he(or she?) put out a review. I hate escort missions but otherwise I'm too nuts for Dragons to pass on this game.

lol you people remember the 10/10 reviews brute force was getting the first review week? Yah I have feeling LAIR has the same fate there. Ohh and about the graphics, the problem aren't the indivual parts, it's the complete package that looks very cluttered. Their artistic direction is pretty non existant in that department.

hehe, your post just confirmed alot of the attitude on here:

The definitive review is the one that fits the agenda...

I bet you were strongly defending brute force when those reviews came in hehe,

Anyway, Im pretty looking forward to lair. I can imagine it getting at least 8s

peace

How in the hell do you have non existent art direction?

Yeah, this rule also applies to the use of the words "xbot" and "ntard". If you are using these words, you've just completely undermined your argument. Not that your argument was very good in the first place, tdr.

One that fits how they really want a game to turn out. Pretty much the way it is on GAF.
You know, I'm going to remind all of you guys of this when Play gives NiGHTS 2 a 10/10, followed by giving Halo 3 and Killzone 2 7/10s.

its takes place during ww2( i don't know) but its not brown and gritty. i also think gears was a little bit too brown but it showed a little variety. post some links to lair that brings out the color. all ive seen were brown ones.

You're really pushing your luck. Well actually it's been pushed off a cliff but yet you continue pushing, like a cartoon character that hasn't bothered to look down yet.

Because there aren't enough shooters right?

Go find pictures yourself. But I already know you have made up your mind. So, don't even bother.

People have already posted a ton of pics that showed off the colours in the game. Check the last couple pages.

Unless...

Oh my, are you colourblind, sir?

Can't everyone get along?

Lair might not be my type of game at all, but there's some blatant Xbot invasion in here :lol

You know what you'll see right? Universal praise for Play on their Nights 2 review, and pure hatred for those Halo 3/Killzone 2 reviews.

Personally, I don't give a shit about the scores. I want to read the review. I actually like Play for the most part, but pay absolutely no attention to the scores. If the review is written like dogshit, I'll gleefully slam it. :D

But this is GAF, home of the riot that ensued over an 8.8. Imagine the doom and gloom if Super Mario Galaxy doesn't receive 10s everywhere.

Well, what I've been getting at this whole thread is that Play's reviews don't mean anything, one way or the other. I'm fully expecting Lair to be an 8-9/10 game, but I'm not going to accept Play's word as confirmation, and nobody who is familiar with Play and has half a brain should, either.

With other mags, I'd just say "read the words, not the score", but Play's enthusiasm tends to permeate even the words of their reviews. If you love something, you have trouble seeing its flaws, and Play in general seems to love a lot.

Well, I see it like this. Play is a perfect counter-balance to GAF. Play loves a lot, GAF hates damn near everything. I like the Yin/Yang personally. :D
