Point n Click Adventure GAF 2015 - Back with a vengeance

I got back into pnc yesterday, didn't play any of them for several years. Since Deponia 1 in fact. I'm a little ashamed by that as I loved Deponia.

So I played Journey Down Ep1 on iOS and, fuck this my first post here will be a negative one... I don't know, while the game certainly is made well enough and fits expectations as a pnc, I found that its charm wore off with time and that it finally turned into plain anecdotal, like to many little pnc out there.
Again, difficult to tell exactly what went wrong for me. While the puzzles where not totally out there, I felt they were a little too much on the nonsense side, the tasks asked to the protagonist are too meaningless, too generic, the game is short and the plot begins when the game ends, on the technical side it can be at the same time good looking and a little hideous (some characters seem tacked on the scenery), the iOS version is in an unacceptable state with the whole second it often takes to change screen...

Really, it wasn't horrible, but all these little elements added together make me hesitant to buy and play the second part now.

I assume you played it on an older iOS device? I never noticed that with the Mini 2.

Hmm, nope. I played the game on an Ipad 4, and while I'm speaking out of my ass I don't see how it couldn't run perfectly on it. Maybe it's a problem on my end, but changing screen was long enough (but thankfully short enough too) to activate the part of my gamer brain that screams 'Freeze ?' every time.

But on another note, I just begun playing Resonance on PC, and oh my, this has the potential to instantly make me a Wadjet fan. I particularly like the blend of the ultra classic pnc style with innovative mechanisms. The plot hasn't really begun but it has a lot of potential, and so far I would say that it has a no nonsense approach to its puzzles that is refreshing. Oh, and nobody asked me to fetch him a dozen random junks.
The only notable problems I can see so far is that the UI is quite shitty, move speed is very low and where I'm at it seems the creator think I have any knowledge in electricity. Boy, is he wrong.

How is GoG?
Is it reliable?

Just picked up GKnight sins of the Father on steam, realized, it's the game before this one game I had many years ago "the beast with in"

Saw it for cheap on there, will that run on Windows 7?

GOG says it works on "Windows (XP, Vista, 7, 8)" so it should work.

And if it won't, there's a 30-days return policy (their tech support will try to help you running the game properly and if everything fails, they will return you money).

Man, 6 years ago, and it feels good to see this thread still going strong! :)

I got a chance to see Starr Mazer this past weekend at PAX south, it looks REALLY awesome. It wasn't playable, but they had some streaming video, and it was fun to talk with the designers a bit about it.

There is a game I have been trying to identify for what feels like well over a decade. I vaguely remember my father installing it on our computer back in the early 90's. Well, by looking through your 2009 thread I just found out that game is called Amazon: Guardian of Eden, and free to boot! Thank you sir. The thread that keeps on giving indeed.

Um, on Steam or on GoG? If it's really on Steam, it's the remake that came out a couple months back, so it will run perfectly fine... Well, as fine as a Phoenix Online game will run anyway.

We all agree this recent wave of PnC threads on NeoGAF is a direct result of Grim Fandango's re-release, right?

Not that I'm complaining, quite the opposite in fact.

I'd guess it's the biggest factor. People are getting caught up in the excitement for GF and either revisiting a genre they once loved or becoming interested in a genre they haven't yet explored.

It's great to see so much interest in adventure games sprouting up, even if it's short-lived.

Edit: Figured I'd make a thread about this. It's here: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?p=149563577#post149563577

TL;DR: King's Quest info! Lots of it!

So I've been sick on the couch all day, not doing much except for feeling sorry for myself and reading a lot. I happened to be reading the newest Game Informer, and it's actually full of information on the new King's Quest. I don't think most of this information is widely available online yet, so I figured I'd type out all the new juicy facts for you guys:

Some general information:
- 5 episodes. First episode will arrive in the fall. They're still working out the details on the episodes after that, but it won't be more than 'a couple of months'.
- Direct control, one button interactions, still adventure game style puzzles - no action or platforming sequences.
- There is still an inventory system.
- Choice plays a big part in the game - more information below.
- There are some new screenshots, but as far as I can tell they're all from situations you saw in the trailer. There is also some new concept art showing stuff that's not in the trailer, including a very nice watercolour one with Graham riding through a forest on some sort of yellow beast, and another one of four knights.
- They have plans for what they want to do with the series after the first one if it's a success, but the first series of games forms its own complete story.

Some information on the story and the structure of the games:
- It's focused on Graham's family, but they hint at some sort of cameo for Mask of Eternity's Connor.
- Graham is telling stories to his granddaughter, which allows for hopping between different times in Graham's life.
- In the first episode Gwendolyn (his granddaughter) is going to take part in an archery tournament but is unsure of her chances of winning, so Graham tells the story of how he beat the odds and became a knight in his youth.
- It won't be a retelling of the original games, and it won't be a reboot. Instead, everything that happened in the old games still happened, and these games 'fill the gaps', such as the aforementioned story of how Graham became a knight.
- Even though it won't be a retelling, the first episode does start in a familiar scene - the well with the dragon guarding the magic mirror from the first game (also seen in the trailer). It acts as a fairly linear introduction to the new gameplay style. The game starts with Graham walking down a path towards the well, 'It's been years since I came here...', and climbs down into it. At the bottom there are all kinds of things: skeletons, arrows, and a lot of mattresses. Gwendolyn's voice interrupts and asks why there are mattresses. Later in the first episode you see that same scene again but at an earlier point in Graham's life, and all the weird things you saw the first time are explained. Skipping through time like that (and sticking so closely to actual scenes from the original games) isn't the focus of the new episodes, but it can happen now and again. The article mentions that most episodes will stick to a single period in Graham's life within that episode though.
- The old 'Sierra-style' narrator is still there, but now it's the older Graham. An amusing anecdote to illustrate this from the article: if Graham walks past one of the mattresses in the well you can choose to jump on them. The voice over starts saying that it was an urgent situation, and that there wasn't any time to hide under the covers. If you continue jumping on the bed however, the voice over starts again and admits that he did take a brief nap during his time in the well.
- No dead ends (meaning that you can't get into an unwinnable state because you didn't pick up a certain item 4 hours earlier), but death is still there. When you die you are automatically brought back to the point before you made your fatal mistake, with old Graham in the voice over mentioning something like 'that's what would have happened if I...' or 'Just wanted to see if you're paying attention' after his granddaughter interrupts.
- There is some form of choice mechanic in the game, based on how you choose to solve certain scenario's. For instance: at the end of the introductory sequence you face the dragon (as seen in the trailer), and you have to find a way to escape. Using a bow you found in the well you can shoot him in the eye, blinding him while you escape, or you can shoot a feeding bell, luring him away, or you can shoot his shackles and free him. The choice you make there will have consequences which ripple through in later episodes as well. Freeing the dragon might mean that he will befriend Graham later down the line, or he might decide to go on a rampage in Daventry, for instance.
- These choices are gameplay based, not dialogue based. There are branching dialogue trees, but the major decisions will come through during actual gameplay.
- The choices aren't between 'Good Graham' and 'Bad Graham' - the older games have already proven that Graham is a good guy. Rather, most of the choices will be focused around three core traits: Wisdom, Bravery and Compassion. The designers want to make sure you mix up your choices and don't just stick to a single trait the entire time.
- What choices the player will make influences your granddaughter and the problem she faces in that episode. For instance, if you decide to shoot the dragon in the eye, what lesson does that teach your granddaughter about how she should approach her uncertainty towards the tournament? How your granddaughter develops over the five episodes is mostly a consequence of your choices in the stories old Graham is telling.
- The opening in the well is linear, but after that the game opens up and you have an entire forest to explore. Answers to puzzles you encounter won't necessarily be nearby, and the game encourages exploration.
- In the well sequence Graham is a knight already - the rest of the first episode features Graham before he became a knight. Later episodes will jump slightly forward in Graham's life each time.
- The main story of the first episode focuses on young Graham trying to become a knight by entering an elimination contest against three other knights. One is faster, one is stronger, one is smarter. He has to outsmart all of them.
- The puzzles have multiple solutions. For instance: a woman has a cart that's missing a wheel. There are multiple circular objects in the world that could serve as a replacement for the wheel.

And that's about it. I have a bit of a fever so I'm sorry if any of this is confusing or full of spelling mistakes - but I'm happy that I had something to focus on for a bit and I'm sure there are some people in here who'd appreciate the new information.

As for my opinion on all this: it seems they took a lot of inspiration from Telltale (remember that Telltale had the license for a bit - I doubt they inherited their design ideas, but the control methods, choice mechanics and episodic model sure sounds like Telltale.
I admit I was never the biggest fan of the Sierra licenses, but I respect those games a lot and I'll give this a chance. How they decided to tie together your granddaughter's problem and the stories you're telling and how it influences her seems inspired to me, and it fits the fairy tale idea of the old games. It seems like it could be worth a play. I'm curious to hear what classic King's Quest-fans think of all this though.

Is that the one where at some point you have to drop hot peppers in this guys meal so he gets distracted so you can grab something/leave through a door or something like that?

Also, "The Great Fusion" is free today on iOS. I'm posting from my phone, so I can't embed a picture easily, but it looks good the first few minutes!

Yeah the remake I got on steam, but I really want to play that 'beast within' that I paid like $60 for at some sci-fi convention at a hotel by my house way back in the day

So I just bought a copy of Blade Runner on ebay, going to have some fun with this when it arrives.

I wish that comes up on GOG at some point. Along with these titles:

X Files *
Agatha Christie - And Then There Were None *
Agatha Christie - Under The Sun *
Neverhood *
Virtual Springfield

* I actually own the physical disks

I really can't stand "bullet-hell" style shooters :-(

Hey, just some insight: The SHMUP sections/elements of Starr Mazer aren't necessarily "bullet hell."

We're aiming for a mid 90s "classic shoot 'em up" feel, which is more about deliberate skill and personal growth as a pilot than "move a pixel around between a billion other pixels."

There is a lot going on in that GIF because we're testing a dynamic ramping difficulty feature, which will allow your playstyle in the PNC sections to move along the procedurally generated SHMUP sections and vice versa.

I'd love to address any concerns you might have further!

Cool that's a positive for me then :)

Edit quickly skimmed the post being at work didn't realise who the poster was.

Looking forward to seeing more of your game and good luck hope it's a great success.

Thanks for the feedback, and welcome to GAF if you just got your account activated.
I am a big fan of classic non-bullet hell shmups like Sonic Wings, Zanac X Zanac, Super Star Soldier, to name a few.
Heck if it is similar to Gradius or Flying Hamster, I'm down.
Good luck with the game and I should consider donating soon since I recently got my paycheck, hehe.

So the weekly Humble Bundle has AR-K in it for the lowest tier. Again, it's $1 so I'll probably go for it. Heard some bad things like bugs everywhere but apparently that isn't what it used to be that broke the game. Haven't heard anything amazing about the game but meh some people like and it's only $1 lol

The Devil's Men looks so beautiful. I'm really excited for that. I'm hesitant about Silence but I think it should turn out alright. I should play Memoria soon too, Chains of Satinav was pretty good.

So how's that new game from Phoenix Online? Is it any good?

If you're asking about the Supreme League of Patriots, I've played all three episodes. It's competently done, with some funny bits, but some of the humor fell a little flat for me. The voice acting was pretty good all around. The puzzles all make sense for the most part and none of them are really complicated. The art style was one of the strong parts of the game, I thought it captured the comic book style pretty well.

I think the biggest part of the problem for me was that none of the characters are really likeable. Also, if you do get it, make sure to turn off the hints, they spoil some of the puzzles. I played it on Linux, where it ran pretty well, no performance problems or anything like that.

I'd say it was okay, but not great. I spent about 3 hours per episode. If you have any questions, feel free to ask!

So I'm liking Sinking Island, it's a nice relaxing PnC to play on nights. Lots of walking, mouths don't move during conversation but at least the ENG voice acting isn't bad. It's starting to pick up momentum after the slow start, so yeah I'm glad I picked it up from that cheap bundle deal.

Thanks for the impressions, so 9ish hours to finish the game, it is on sale on GOG, so I might pick it up from there unless GMG offer it for cheaper. ...or maybe wait for a sale >_>;

Glad you're liking it. For the price, you can't really complain!

It's a fantastic game. What are your thoughts on the investigation gameplay? I thought it was one of the most complex systems out there.

Sinking Island started off pretty slow and boring but it's really got me hooked now. Yes the investigative screen and putting together what happened for objectives feels great and when you finally figure it out, I love that noise that says you finished the mandate. Lips not moving during dialogue and lots of lots of walking are meh but the game as a whole has really stuck on me. I guess I'm weak to murder mystery games within a set area. My opinion on this game really skyrocketed from the first day (in game) lol. I definitely recommend it! Areas are atmospheric and the story definitely gets me. :)

Yea it does start slow, it's a slow burner. The Lip synching (or lack thereof, rather) has always been my biggest complaint but it was made on a small budget by a dying studio. It's too bad many people probably missed it initially. I love all of Sokal's games, but Sinking Island may be one of my favorite. The atmosphere and gameplay are really great for a PnC.

Check out Paradise too, when you can.

Yeah, thanks for pushing this my way folks! I'll check Paradise and such after this. Honestly I'm having a hard time very early on into Syberia but I'm sure if I just get past that point I'll wake up to the love of the series people have. But yeah I'm surprised how my opinion changed on this game. At first I was like "well it was only $1 so whatever" but then it got better.

Okay just finished Sinking Island. Yeah that was pretty fun, especially how you had to put clues together each mandate session. Although towards the end it seems like there were sidequest-like events that I skipped like
finding the altar
and other things. Had a bunch of flaws but I really got into it. Really like these stuck in enclosed areas and have to deduce a criminal suspect. Time to find a way to get a hold of Paradise. Seems like Steam/GOG doesn't stock it and I pretty much only go digital for my PnC games so not sure how I'll be able to buy it lol. In the meantime I guess I need to continue my Sokal high with pushing through Syberia.

Hey guys, I'm trying to get into adventure gaming. The only experience I really have with them are playing the demo of Grim Fandango when I was a kid, The Neverhood, and playing through the first episode of Broken Age. I'm definitely going to be buying Grim Fandango Remastered for PC (already own it for PS4/Vita).

I was wondering - is The Journey Down worth picking up? I really like the way the game looks like an early 2000's title and some people say it's very much like Grim Fandango, which would be awesome. So, worth $15 for the two episodes out now?

I also didn't know that the Neverhood/Skullmonkeys guys were making a new game! Really wish I hadn't missed the Kickstarter for that, but damn, I'm hyped for that gorgeous claymation.

I really enjoyed 1&2 of TJD. Episode one is pretty short (took me like 2 hours) but Ep 2 is like 5-6 hours by it self. I would go for it. The art is really great and the MUSIC.. Oh man, I was searching for that group's music online because it's so soothing and sets a great atmosphere. I recommend them for sure. Fun characters, nice music, not too hard etc. Actually talking about it I think I need to replay them sometime in the near future.

Oh and on an unrelated note it seems like Dead Synchronicity: Tomorrow Comes Today has a release date for April 10th. Adding it to my calender. Really liked what I saw from the KS videos and stuff.

armikrog is going to be the best and I'm extremely excited for it. skullmonkeys and the neverhood were two of my favorite games growing up as a kid. I'm also a huge claymation fan and absolutely love eerie jan svankmajer-ish stop motion.

haven't really gotten anything too special from backing on KS (nowhere near as cool as broken age and really... only minimal updates), however, I will be getting the physical edition due to my tier so I'm looking forward to that.

It's good. Not great, but pretty good and one of the better adventures I've played the past couple years. BS5's first half is kind of easy but it gets more difficult near the end (with at least one challenging multi-layered puzzle). The story ends somewhat abruptly, but there's still a solid 7-8 hours of gameplay. Overall BS5 is a solid point and click adventure, especially worth playing if you've enjoyed the BS series.

Don't really want to spend $10 for BS5 right now and have like all the other games except for The Detail Ep1 but might put down the amount for Detail as it looks cool.
