It doesn't even have to be that early. If the PS4/Xbone only last 6 years, Nintendo can squeeze another three years out of the Wii U before releasing another system. A four year cycle isn't that bad.
Increasing the Wii's life cycle wouldn't have changed how barren the software landscape was for the Wii, the problem is Nintendo can only make so much software on their own and there was little reason for third parties to support the Wii outside of games like Just Dance.
Nintendo just needs to stagger releases better and handle supporting multiple platforms. And I'm not suggesting completely switching to a 4-5 year console life cycle, but to do that just with the Wii U so they can find a way to refresh in the middle of their competitions life cycles. If Nintendo release a system in three years that is more comparable to the PS4, they will have less competition because there won't be any competitive hardware releases in the near future and won't be as looked down for being the weaker console.
Imagine if the Wii U didn't have a tablet controller, but instead released 4 years into the 360 and PS3 cycle. Suddenly the system is a lot more attractive to people directly comparing hardware numbers. Obviously this isn't the only answer for solving Nintendo's problems, but I think it could help.
9 million for the fiscal year?
Yep, good lick with that.

I honestly can't see a possible revival.
PS3 and 360 and Wii (if they're actually still selling them?) are going to be the go-to machines for the next year or two, for the more cost sensitive crowd. Vast library, cheap prices.
Meanwhile, PS4 and X1 are extremely sought by the "hardcore" (and i'm using quotation marks because otherwise freezamite might flip out) crowd and will start building up libraries already this year of stuff that you won't be playing on the WiiU.
And I didn't even bring PC's, handhelds, tablets and smartphones into the mix.
Sony's PlayStation UK arm has said that it'll do its best to fulfil the demand from gamers still waiting for the PS4 in the UK.
In a note sent to MCV, UK MD Fergal Gara said, "We are delighted by the initial sales of PS4 and are proud to have set new records for a UK console launch.
"In particular, I want to thank all the gamers who have waited patiently for PS4 and who have come out to support PlayStation. I also want to thank all of our retail and publishing partners who have helped make this possible by delivering huge sales in a very short period of time and great games for PS4.
"Since the initial announcement back in February, pre-orders for PS4 have surpassed all expectations and we continue to work hard to fulfil the remainder of these pre-orders and to deliver additional consoles to the market for the many more gamers who want a PS4. Substantial further volumes of PS4 will arrive in the UK before Christmas."
It never did, but you couldn't fucking tell anyone that shit early this year, without having someone jump down your throat.
Very good. Kick them where it hurts. Only way they'll ever wake up to their hubris. It's too late for the WiiU, but it should finally drive the point home about how fucking horribly they screwed up.
It's kind of cathartic to see them getting destroyed on the market. It can only get better from here.
It's pretty much like the early PS3 days when it comes to some of the vocal Wii U fans. They haven't hit the acceptance part and continually claw at the walls when something goes down. I love the fuck out of some 'tendo, but they literally slept for an entire year and shat the bed in the process. I'm going to still get my Mario on and I know at least a dozen games are on the library's shortlist for the future, but the console can only ever see a "dignified third place" at best. That position will only come though if Nintendo shapes the fuck up and makes sure that even if they aren't in the arms race this round, they are still thinking about the consumers as a whole.
... Despite slow sales the Wii U should easily top 10 million units sold in its lifetime, and Nintendo can try again later...
If anything, a short life cycle for the Wii U might be very beneficial for Nintendo in the long run..
I have no interest in the character, or the series aesthetics at all. You'd have to change a lot of stuff for me to have any interest. Not just remove Mario. The franchise has never personally appealed to me and I don't think it ever will. Knack is more interesting to me simply by default, which says more about how much I dislike Mario, as opposed to saying anything about Knack's quality.
I haven't played Knack, no idea whether I'd even like it, but I still want to try it. I'm completely indifferent towards 3D World, all the media I've seen has done absolutely nothing for me.

While not a popular opinion, it's one I share. I love Nintendo, so I want them to hurt. Bad. You would think they could only learn from this, but then again they said they had learned from the 3DS launch.
They need to sell 8.5m units across the fourth and first quarters to meet the target. More than luck required. A lot more.
Another worry I have though, is that what little 3rd party ports the Wii U gets might dry up once cross-gen development comes to an end. Although, in the 1 or 2 years it takes for that to happen, I suppose Nintendo's situation will be changing, one way or another (talks of new console, or third party support no longer being financially viable).

A wiiU pack is currently a black Friday lightening deal on Amazon UK, £50 off the just dance/Nintendo land/wiiu party pack.
Offer is about to expire, and only 10% have been claimed in those 3 hours.
At any time, thats bad. Right before Christmas though, its fucking pathetic.

Everyone benefits from a PS4 power leveled Nintendo console. Customers can still buy 3rd party games with relevant graphics and they also get Nintendo's exclusives. It's a win win.
Sometimes this is what a company needs. Sony got kicked around a lot through the PS3's life - and rightly so - but they seem to have learned from it. Hopefully Nintendo will learn some valuable lessons from the Wii U.
And yet the ps3 is still insanely expensive.

The Wii U's sales appear to be so poor that it may lose the remainder of its third party support even before cross-gen development completely ends. Somewhere right now there's a producer at Ubisoft who's really wishing that they had never announced a Wii U version of Watch Dogs.

I don't understand why so many people think that all Nintendo need to do to get proper third party support is release a substantially more powerful console. I think the problems are deeper than that.
The first year of the 3DS should have been a warning shot, and they repeated it with the Wii. U anyway, I feel Nintendo won't pay attention to outside their little bubble unless there's a voice of reason within Nintendo.

I want to be listening in on the investor call when Iwata finally has to admit to not hitting that number - why it hasn't been revised yet is a mystery to me, it's just going to make saving face even harder.

Nintendo will not learn the lesson that Sony learnt with PS3. Nintendo already admitted they do not have the capability to compete with Sony and MS when it comes to hardware power and services. They have no in-house talent pool to even draw on to create a proper OS. They are a shambles on the technical front.
That is why they always go for something totally different, they learnt with GameCube that the other 2 are superior when you want to play by their rules. That is why they go for the blue ocean. Struck gold with Wii, but now that mania is over and we come back to the unarrestable decline. Their original path. They have the cash to fight it for a while and will keep on betting for a while.
Nintendo has no console future, that is a cold reality. They basically lied to their shareholders with the 9mn forecast. Things are horrendous and they still have their head in the sand. Their future is as a software publisher. They would be able to cut some stellar deals, their franchises have no equal outside of GTA and Call of Dudebro.
Imagine the killing Nintendo would have made if Super Mario 3D World was a PlayStation 4 launch title.
I think it would be worse to revise the figure AND STILL not meet it.
Catch 22 unless they lower it to 100 units sold.

Wait, 9m forecast for Wii U is real?
For which quarter? For which year?
Definitely not before Q1 2014. I just don't see it.
This is a really good Chinner post cause I can't tell if I'm being Chinner'd or not.I think the real thing to be said is that developer attitudes are changing, and Nintendo's is one that is stuck in the past. That's not a necessary a bad thing.
When Miyamoto-san sits down and plans a game, the firsts though he thinks is 'How do I make the most fun game to play, that will give a player feel like a child again and make them truly happy'. This is seen in all of his games, Wii Sports made the elderly feel relevant again, and Mario Galaxy 2 was like the citizen kane of videogames. You know when Nintendo and Shigsy make a game, it's a love letter from them to you.
When a PS4/Xbone developer makes a game, they think 'how do we make the most cinematic and violent game? what movies do we like the most to steal ideas from? what are the biggest markets to appeal to?' When I played GTAV, i knew rockstar was appealing to the middle classes, stealing ideas from films and trying to impress kids with excessive violence and gang slang. They don't care about you, they just want your money. This isn't like Nintendo, who don't mind if they don't sell many copies or consoles. Unlike TLOU which wanted to please film critics, no doubt it would have been aimed to please Robert Ebert.
cynicism is a growing trend in videogames, i just want someone who wnats to make fun games again.
