For reference, this was the Tories' campaign against him:

Can you name all the major cities and their countries for all continents? I remember from the last World Cup thread that Europeans are very poor at geography outside of Europe.

Name it, probably no. Locate it if I see the name, I will have high probability to get right.

As a Londoner I voted for him. Anything to ensure sure Zac didn't get in.

Let's give Khan a shot, and a wonderful moment for white/non white London. I do love my city.
Man, the comments on Facebook are so disheartening.
Like Obama butthurt posts all over again.

Well that's cool, I voted for him, not because I like him in particular but because he seemed like the least awful option that actually had a chance.

What about the mayor of Rotterdam?

Listen mate, I've never even heard of rotterdam before, sounds like a dog breed mixed with a water barrier.

Uncanny timing for a Guardian article.

http://www.theguardian.com/politics/2016/may/06/london-mayor-global-press-reaction-sadiq-khan-curiosity-ignorance

In London the religion of the Labour candidate for the city’s mayor became an issue only when his Conservative opponent made it one, by attempting to link his rival to Islamist extremism in a campaign criticised as divisive and racist.

Abroad, however, it seems the faith and family background of Sadiq Khan is seen through a somewhat different prism: in much foreign media coverage of the elections, it was overwhelmingly more important than his politics.

It's sad watching the Right wing media scream 'TERRORIST! TERRORIST!' against a candidate that has a record of supporting LGBT and women's rights. I hope Khan protects London's nightlife as well. Local councils are ruining it slowly but surely by forcing great venues to close.

Cool, good for him. After all the shit you hear about muslims in the media its nice to see some portrayed positively.

How will this dissuade radicalization (in the west)?

Is this really the first thing that came to your mind when you saw this story?

Son of a bus driver beats son of a billionaire. It's the feel-good story of the summer.

Yeah, I'm not a Londoner, but the Conservative campaign was run terribly and has revealed the dark core at the center of the Tories that it has tried very hard to hide.

In total, 43% of voters chose Labour for the Assembly, while 31% went for the Conservatives. The Green Party had the third most votes.

That's surprising, That's a good direction we're going in, almost makes me wish I voted for them.

And man lib dem support is all but gone isn't even, serves them right.

What has been happening to Londons clubs?

What are the libs and Tories positions on underground multi story basements in homes? I learned about the race to dig deeper underground for people and that it's noisy for neighbors and jacks up their home prices.

Wow. Good for this Sadiq Khan dude. First major muslim politician in the Western world, right? I hope he sets a great example for muslims and shows the rest of the world that not all of us are cunts.

We need more Muslims movie stars, athletes and politicians. Exposure to moderate muslim figures will help fight islamophobia. Amir Khan is fighting in Vegas tomorrow. Should be fun.

Agreed.

Go for it, that way people can stop wanking when they go on pornhub when they see a vid of this ugly ho naked.

This is covered by planning law, which is the responsibility of the boroughs. Some boroughs (eg. Westminster and Kennsington&Chelsea have cracked down on these megabasements).

The London Mayor's major responsibility is transport, which takes up about £11.5b of his £17b budget (which is bigger than the national budget of eg. Serbia). Then it's the Met police at £3.5b.

Somehow, Khan is going to have to solve London's chronic housing problem with the £2b or so left over. I think he'll find it tricky.

It was pretty obvious I was referring ot using the H word here.
No need for this mysogynist nonsense, just because you disagree with her views.

If only the people of the British Raj were alive to see this. The descendant of Indians/Pakistani elected to be Mayor of London. One of the most powerful positions in the UK. Barely 70 years from the end of the British Empire in India, a Pakistani is leading the people of London, pretty much behind only the Prime Minister and Queen in power. Unreal. White people itself are a minority in London now, perhaps the second most culturally significant city behind just New York in terms of the West.

Last I checked Whites were still a majority but White Britons were a minority. Also I'd say that people like the Chancellor of the Exchequer and even the First Minister of Scotland are more powerful than the Mayor of London although the Mayor of London may have a better chance of getting into central government than the First Minister of Scotland. London really doesn't have too many devolved powers.

It is certainly still significant though.
