Exactly, they were mentioning earlier that they targeted specific government officials' accounts, including Paul Ryan and Trump.

Indeed. It targets a person or a small set of people from all avenues (all types of accounts they have). Phishing is the broad spam emails to all accounts possible hoping for someone to bite.

Thanks for the clarifications. I'm listening to the video, but also doing other stuff so I miss things from time to time.

I've learned more about Russian tactics in this hearing than I think I ever care to know. :/

It's been incredibly informative and hopefully Americans are taking the time to actually watch.

I don't want to make a generalization, but I think the only people watching are people who want to actually be informed. Most of Trump's base I imagine isn't watching.

haha yeah, I thought I heard that..

Is it really too much to ask? or do they worry about debates starting about what's really true or not....and thus taking up most of their evenings.

The idea of a government organization gauging the veracity of statements in the media made about the government is inherently risky and corruptible. Better that private, not-for-profit organizations handle this.

Back in December, a guy who was one of the top people there was taken away during a meeting. Two guys went into the meeting room, tossed a black bag over his head, and dragged him out. Hasn't been seen since.

wat the fuck?

Edit: Can someone summarize what they said about Kaspersky?

So is Watt really on his own? Worrying about his life? being on Putin's hitlist.

I think he meant that he doesn't know that the United States will be watching out for him since there's no stance about what to do about Russia. The executive branch sure as hell isn't watching out for him.

Also Godson is giving me some "The Rock" flashbacks with how people keep mispronouncing his name. "Goodspeed?"

That's what gets me about this, I have a right-leaning co-worker in IT who emails the whole office every week warning about phishing emails, but now that Russian phishing attacks are front and center and being investigated by the Senate in the context of Trump's election, he makes no mention about cybersecurity or this hearing at all. WTF.

Is it on Fox News? If not, then the answer is no. That's the power the news media has.

If I had to take a guess (I don't care enough to find out/nor do I want to get fox any clicks on their website) but i'm assuming they aren't broadcasting it.

Anyway, props to Dr. Rid

HOLY SHIT... My mind is reeling, I can't believe everything that's coming out about this administration and everyone involved with it...

Trump's the first Trojan horse Russia got in. We should be more worried about Putin's machinations and prevent ourselves from being further manipulated.

Stuff like this is why comments like "Russia didn't cause Hillary to lose" piss me off. The fact is they, with the help of right-wing media sites, were able to systemically target voters across the board throughout this country, using social media sites like FB, Twitter, etc to disseminate completely fabricated stories with the sole intention of hurting Clinton and helping Trump. Sites like Brietfart and Infowarz don't even try to hide this fact. They blatantly disseminate lies, and it's absurd they can do it legally.

Fox News is the worst thing that's ever happened to this country in terms of informing the public. They were the first to dip their toes into this field with out-of-context and misinformed headlines completely impertinent to the information they were reporting on, with the sole purpose of bending the news to make someone look better or worse depending on their political affiliation. It does not surprise me in the least that Putin and Russia were able to see just how misinformed the public are, how easily they believe blatantly false or unrepresentative news, and how they could use that to misinform the public and sow distrust in actual journalistic institutions. AND not only that, but how they can use that same strategy for extremists on the complete OTHER end of the spectrum, using the exact same stories and headlines to misguide liberals anger and frustration at the institutions Russia wishes to destroy.

The entire thing is so blatantly obvious.

Guys, I'm cereal about dis, we didn't haxx USA

"All those things are fictional, illusory and provocations, lies,” the Russian president said. “All these are used for domestic American political agendas. The anti-Russian card is played by different political forces inside the United States to trade on that and consolidate their positions inside.”

Putin’s comments came as the Senate Intelligence Committee was set to begin a hearing entitled “Disinformation: A Primer in Russian Active Measures and Influence Campaigns,” which will focus on understanding the method of Russia’s active disinformation campaign and assess the extent of Moscow’s interference.

Burr's dumbass comments on how the Russians want Socialists in power in the USA when they got their man in Trump makes me believe Burr will not be doing much of an investigation with his preconceived notions.

If Trump isn't a socialist he can not be working for Russia according to Burr. This fucking country.

We can trust Putin on this! Best to save everyone some wasted effort by trashing all investigations on Russian meddling.

The easiest way to see a Russian twitter troll is to see if they have the name "Deplorable" or "Freedom". For example "Deplorable Joe", "Freedom Danielle" etc that use a profile pic of random american people and have like 50K followers and thousands of tweets.
You inspired me to look for one and it took me 3 minutes to find this guy:

He/she has to be a Russian troll, right? The level of activity seems impossible for anyone who isn't getting paid to troll Twitter.

We will have to wait and see how the rest of the investigation goes. Who they interview and how the questions are asked. I'm sure Warner will raise a shitstorm(like Schiff is) if something don't smell right.

Yeah it's pretty obvious based on what he's retweeting and how often. Twitter is full of them. Of course the company could do something about that....

Don't overindex on Cambridge Analytica. The latest episode of WNYC's Note To Self podcast talks about them and shot down the theory that they had a heavy impact in this election.

It would be of vital interest that Cambridge analytica and Facebook played down any ability to profile but you don't spend millions doing Facebook "personality tests" for a project that doesn't work. There is more to this aspect that should come out and don't buy experts playing down its usefulness unless they have special access to Facebook data and Cambridge analytica data. Facebook, by the way, is resisting attempts to get information on fake news links and related stuff. With Peter Theil on the board no surprise why.
