Swap Note

Yeah, I'll really miss the special messages. Nintendo folks do post to Miiverse, but not drawings or handwriting (that often) or send sound files. It's not the same.

Why'd you have to send all those kids offensive images, Gaf?

The Miis of the recipients looked like they were over 18, I swear.

Oh.

So sudden, not even a goodbye note from Nikki...

They could have waited a bit longer, I always enjoyed the Christmas/new Year notes.

For the record, a total of 73 unique bonus stationery have been released for Swapnote. Grand total is 85 if we include every single one.

Shows how utterly backwards Nintendo are. Instead of coming up with a comprehensive, viable system to safeguard children, they'd rather just shutdowneverything.jpg

Hurry up with Miiverse you backwards fucks.

Should probably not trust the 7-11 security cameras quite so much
It's kind of bizarre that they explicitly discontinued the special messages as well. Those are completely separate from the supposed problems that existed with the service. Why would they? Miiverse is the only explanation I can think of, because they do post news and stuff on Miiverse in the same fashion.

Well they disabled SpotPass, so how would they send out those messages? They've basically cleaved off the entire online functionality of the software.

Poor Nikki came into work yesterday ready to send out a Halloween note to everyone but got told to pack up her desk and leave instead.

There is a massive hole of logic smack dab in the middle of Nintendo's given explanation. They have a problem with kids going on the internet and logging into message boards and exchanging friend codes and then using that to exchange potentially inappropriate messages.

If a kid can already use the internet and exchange information with somebody, being able to exchange crude doodles and blurry photos through an awkward secondary device is not even part of the problem.

Really feel like there's some sort of lawsuit or something behind the curtain. You don't just up and change things THIS suddenly with the specific comment of "minor receiving lewd images" for nothing. Nintendo has been in good in the past about giving some sort of notice about software changes.

I used to exchange notes with my gf and it really brightened my day whenever she sent me one because we couldn't see each other during the day or something.
They had gotten so elaborate.

This sucks so much.

I'm so upset.

I have actually never used Swapnote a single time despite owning the 3DS since Day 1. Sorry to the folks who did enjoy it though as I am sure this is a real bummer.

Blame the massive success of the 2DS guys. All those under the age of 7 kiddos that got a 2DS for the Pokomans ruined a good thing we had going.

Yeah, but they didn't have to do that. Could've made it so you can still receive messages through SpotPass, but not send them.

You could be on to something there, honestly. If not an actual suit, warning signs of a big news story. Being able to say "well, we found out about this, and we stopped it" would be a big PR win in the face of that tale.

kotaku article:

According to Yomiuri Online, two men have been arrested for performing "improper acts" in hotel rooms with the same 12 year-old girl on multiple occasions earlier this year. The girl met both men, aged 49 and 36, through her 3DS. Yomiuri Online doesn't specifically mention SwapNote. A Mainichi News report, however, does.

Mainichi reports that charges for child pornography have also been filed against another man, 44, who had allegedly two girls - then aged 11 to 12 - send nude photos through SwapNote, or "Itsu no Ma ni Koukan Nikki" (いつの間に交換日記) as it's called in Japan. The man has confessed to doing so.
