Tesla Effect: A Tex Murphy Adventure |OT| Under a Mean Overseer Memorandum Directive

3 hours in. It's amazing!

I took my time exploring Chandler Avenue. That and the intro were nostalgia overload.
It's great they managed to get everyone back after all these years.

I love how faithful they are to the old games design. This could be the Tex Murphy game we'd get in 1999.

Finished Day 1. This being my first FMV and Tex Murphy game...I'm enjoying it, although the live action scenes don't mesh well with some of the CGI.

My laptop is 1920x1080, would turning on 2K video cause any problems?

I prefer running it in 2K mode even though my monitor isn't fully compatible because I like the black bars on the top and bottom. Makes it feel like a movie. Up to you.

While I've played through the entire series, it hasn't been since their original releases. I know I'm beyond-due for a refresher, but would those currently playing Tesla say it's worth it to play through the other games first or will my extremely dusty, cobwebbed memories suffice? Honestly almost everything regarding the series save for my deep, undying love is gone from my head at this point.

I haven't played them in a few years and i'm still loving the game :)

There's some cut-scenes back to previous games that help quite a lot and bring on all the feels.

So how many days are there, anyone knows yet? I'd google it but I'm afraid of spoilers.

Also, any "cameo level backer" on GAF? I need to know before I start crapping on some of the acting. =P

Anyone whose played the old games knows how much of a chore it was to move around in the environments. They've done great fixing all that as expected. Just saying, they really did balance the old and the new almost perfectly.

This is my first FMV game even though I was in the right age group to play them when I grew up. It is pretty amazing so far. It is so cheesey and the sets are so bad and the textures are so low res and the voices are so bad. And thats why I love it. Just forget all that and dive into the story and world and appreciate it for what it is. We all know the Dixon Hill episodes of Star Trek TNG were the best.

Did I miss the sale/bonus game deal everywhere?

It seems every Tex game since Pandora Directive features a "puzzle porn" location like Sensen. Not a fan of those... thank The Big P.I. in the Sky for in-game help.

I got my game off Steam before the pre-order discount ended, but shouldn't I have also gotten a free Tex Murphy game as well? Or what was the Steam bonus for pre-ordering?

Hum, I can't find the sountrack that was supposed to come with the Steam pre-order... I guess (hope) they just forgot it and it will come soon.

Except for that, I'm enjoying the game quite a lot.

Steam bonuses: Pandora Directive and a sountrack.

Man, big finish forums are getting really weird now

that rude guy who works for big finish has been ignoring the key topic since Wednesday, while still posting other stuff elsewhere, and locking other topics off.

Chris needs to make a statement asap, this isn't really looking very professional

I could have sworn I backed this, but I guess I forgot...Oh well, I'll rectify my mistake by buying it later today.

F' it! I booked the afternoon off work so I could finally start playing this!

I considered replaying Overseer first... ain't nobody got time for that (except teenagers)

Honestly I find the whiners a lot worse. I've read some truly silly, childish rants over the past few days. Some people just have an irrational hatred of Steam and they are letting that shit get in the way of enjoying the great game they've just been served.

Way I see it, BFG delivered a DRM copy and the fact that you have to use Steam to download it should not have caused so much drama. There's a difference between "DRM free" and "direct download", they are not the same thing IMO.

Yeah it is starting to look pretty shady on their part. GOG says they sent all the backer keys to Atlus, Atlus says they sent them to BFG, BFG's rep just says "we're using Steam" so why did they request all the GOG keys? Backers that are pissed off about not being given a choice between a Steam or GOG key have a legit point. The game's available on both, BFG has the GOG keys, why are they refusing to even consider letting backers have those keys? I'm fine with my copy on Steam but having a copy on GOG with all my other Tex Murphy games would be nice as well.

You're always going to get whiners in this situation, but no, I don't find whiners worse then people who break their promises. I expect there will be some kind of drm-free distro available (hopefully today), but the lack of feedback from BFG is only fueling the fire.

Way I see it, BFG delivered a DRM copy and the fact that you have to use Steam to download it should not have caused so much drama. There's a difference between "DRM free" and "direct download", they are not the same thing IMO.

Well these people pledged based on the promise of a non-drm version, and when BFG went with atlas reiterated the promise and said that there would be a version that didn't use steam available to backers.

So there's drama because they haven't fulfilled their promise and left an insulting guy to answer questions.

I'm hoping it's just the rep not knowing what's going on, but it's weird Chris hasn't stepped in by now.

I know BFG promised to provide DRM-free copies, which I consider done (Steam and DRM-free are not mutually exclusive, like BFG said they checked the "no DRM" option when they delivered those Steam keys) but I think the suggestion that there would be non-Steam options for backers might have been just that, a suggestion. I remember them saying they were looking into it, but I don't remember an official promise.

Man Sensen is tying my brain in knots, getting serious Myst vibes from this joint.

Help!

I've put 5 pieces. One is in the well. I have a rope but I think I miss another item. The other is in 9 pieces. I have them but I cannot find a way to put them together...

The bit that I'm finding really weird is that they *did* use GoG for the Beta keys.
Yup, and those who had access to the beta version on GOG were upgraded to the full version there on release. Were they also sent Steam keys as well? I've no idea actually.

Edit: Looking at the GOG forums it seems the beta testers there did indeed get Steam keys as well so they do have the game on both platforms now.

I consider steam itself to be DRM, but there's no need to get into that age-old argument since one of the non-steam promises is easy to find:

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/texmurphy/tex-murphy-project-fedora/posts/645901

"If you don’t want to go through STEAM, we’ll have more information on how to obtain a copy closer to the release of the game."

If I was a douchey lawyer, I would argue that is not technically a promise. ;)

But seriously, I agree that backers have been mislead. Here's the thing though... there are only two possible outcomes that will satisfy them right now, and both are problematic for me:

1. Provide every backer who already received a Steam key with a GOG key, which would hurt the sales of the game because now everyone has an extra key to give out to a friend.

2. Trade every unactivated Steam key for a GOG key, which can't be done automatically and thus would be an enormous administrative task that a small company like BFG simply doesn't have the manpower for.

As someone who desperately wants Tesla Effect to get a sequel, I wish backers would give BFG a break and just swallow the steam pill, than uninstall the program and never look back.

There's a third easy option - give gog keys to people who complain + haven't activated their steam key - not sure how easy getting that data is from steam though, but if it's possible then that would be a low-manpower task.

As someone who desperately wants Tesla Effect to get a sequel, I wish backers would give BFG a break and just swallow the steam pill, than uninstall the program and never look back.

The problem here is I'm pretty sure 95% of those backers wouldn't be backers if they had been told at the start it was Steam only. I know I wouldn't. :/

I think the 95% wouldn't back it number is load of shit. I will grant some number wouldn't have but not 95%. Maybe 10-15%.

One problem with this has already been pointed out, the other I can think of is if you do that and they later release patches, what are you supposed to do, reinstall Steam just to let it patch the game and then uninstall it again each time they release a new patch? That would be a pain in the ass.

Just because you say it's easy doesn't make it so. As you've said yourself, you're not even sure how that would work. Even if they were able to verify steam activation, we're still talking about a manual administrative task for up to 7,000 people.

Also, only providing a service for "people who complain" will just bring on more complaining.

The problem here is I'm pretty sure 95% of those backers wouldn't be backers if they had been told at the start it was Steam only. I know I wouldn't. :/

I guess I'm a proud member of the 5% then. ;)

But really I think it would be much closer to what sueil said, in other words we are dealing with a vocal minority.

lol, you really think only 15% of people currently complaining on bfg's forum would not have backed if steam wasn't an option?

I think you overestimate how many people want the non-steam option personally.

Also, only providing a service for "people who complain" will just bring on more complaining.

It really wouldn't. the non steam option was exactly that - an option, and steam codes were sent to everyone. If someone isn't asking for the non-steam option then...

And update about the game, and keys is forthcoming, please be patient. Thank you.

Mat 'Cubase' Van Rhoon 33 minutes ago

And I will post this again so people don't miss it:

The STEAM copy of the game IS DRM FREE. DRM FREE... DRM FREE! When you upload a game to Steam, you have the option to use or NOT USE DRM. We selected to NOT USE DRM. Which means you only need to use Steam to download the game. After the game is on your hard drive: copy it, move it, do whatever you want with it, IT IS YOURS. You can even delete Steam if you want.... you know why!? Because this game IS AND ALWAYS WILL BE DRM FREE! I implore everybody to please educate yourself on the matter before you start claiming that every single title on steam is DRM. This could not be further from the case.

Mat 'Cubase' Van Rhoon 27 minutes ago

"Truth of the matter is the people who did not believe in your vision and gave you money years in advance, could play it on release day, DRM free"

Which is exactly what was done... you may not like Steam, but lets be honest here: The Steam version is DRM FREE. As stated in my previous message. Also, with 7,000 backers, and a staff of literally a few people you have to be patient while this is resolves. You may have invested money into the game, but the folks at Big Finish invested YEARS and sacrificed LOTS to deliver this game to you guys. So the least people can do is have a few days worth of patience while they resolve these issues.

Huh, another guy at BFG who doesn't really seem to understand the problem (he's the Visual Effects Supervisor/Lead Visual Effects Artist).

Well, at least it looks like it's going to be resolved soon.

lol, you really think only 15% of people currently complaining on bfg's forum would not have backed if steam wasn't an option?

Oh, I thought we were talking about a percentage of total backers. My point was that the people who are "allergic" to using Steam are a vocal minority, and that the vast majority of backers are happy right now.

It's a shame that all this controversy about delivery method is taking over the discussion. There is so much to discuss about the game and how much it has delivered and then some.

I thought we were specifically talking about people who were kicking up a fuss. I agree that the vast majority are happy - that's why I thought gog keys wouldn't require much manpower. If steam are helpful with data, it's a short, one man job.

Yeah. The problem was they let it fester - a quick KS update saying that they were seeing what could be done (or just stopping steve from talking would have done it). I wanted to be talking about the game. :(

Communication can solve most problems. It also seems like there is some confusion as to why some backers are upset. A non-Steam version was promised during the campaign and somehow that's getting twisted into merits of the Steam version being DRM free.

Agreed. That BFG employee who wrote that update which inm8num2 posted above then went onto the BFG forums and asked people not to jump to conclusions - they weren't jumping to anything, they were just accurately reading what another BFG employee wrote!

You couldn't make this stuff up, lol

Project Update #72: Oh my GOG!

Greetings Mutant League!

TEX IS BACK! For two days now, can you believe it? By now, you should have received your Steam code for Tesla Effect.

There has been a lot of hubbub about the GOG codes, so let’s clear that up.

We had requested GOG codes for our Kickstarter backers early on. However, by the night the game was supposed to launch, we had not received them yet. It was a choice of whether we wanted to make the backers wait for the GOG codes, or simply send everyone a Steam code to access “Tesla Effect.” Since we wanted you guys to be able to play the game the first day it came out, we opted to send everyone the Steam code. However, the good news is by Thursday we received GOG codes. We are currently sending out emails with GOG codes to members of the Mutant League. It will be about 24 hours before all the emails have been sent out, so remember to check your inbox (and your spambox!)

People who are at the Beta Level Testing and above tier already have the game on GOG so will not be receiving new codes. The Beta on GOG can be updated to the full edition of the game. For instructions on how to "refresh your shelf" on GOG, please visit: https://secure.gog.com/account/refresh

We respectfully ask that you don’t share the codes with people, and continue to enjoy "Tesla Effect." Have a great weekend!

Best,

Chris

Great stuff. This is certainly true, since we heard something of the kind from GOG a couple of days ago.

So basically this is all steve's fault, lol.
