I just don't really see the point of Thread B. You're asking someone to put quite a lot of effort into a thread that nobody in this thread is going to care about (because they know it already), full of information that anyone else could basically just find on TouchArcade's homepage if they were so inclined.
The difference is that we're not TouchArcade... Theoretically, all the info in this thread could ALSO be found on toucharcade, including their forums with discussions and all. If people preferred that, they wouldn't be here, right? But they're here, so that argument doesn't really have any ground. There's a reason we're all here. Also, I'm not personally asking people to do it, it wasn't even my idea to begin with. People came forward OFFERING to do this. If noone wants to do it, we certainly won't force anyone to do it. Also, pretty sure people in this thread would still care about it. Maybe you won't, maybe others won't, but a lot of people don't look at this thread every day and don't want to sift through 5 pages to catch up. They'd prefer to just look at the summary thread at the end of the month to see what they've missed.
I'm not sure who it's meant to be for. Nobody comes into this thread looking for the games we played last month, they're either looking for the games people consider awesome overall, or the games we're playing NOW.
I don't know about you, but I've been following this thread for a few month now and this happens CONSTANTLY. I don't really understand why people coming in looking for new games would be like "no man, that game came out MORE THAN 40 DAYS AGO, you think I'd play that shit?"? You think that'd happen? If people are really that way and want to know what's being played RIGHT NOW, then coming here and asking is definitely a good idea. If they just want to know what some CONFIRMED GOOD games (not just "hot right now", but confirmed "best of the month games" are, they can take a quick look at the other thread. I can't imagine people dismissing games just because they're more than 10 days or old whatnot.
And it means people won't know where to discuss games. "Do we discuss October's games in October's thread because it was released in October, or do we discuss them here even though it's November now?" etc.
I've said this before, but the solution is fairly simple. Discussions of news/current events/current games, etc, can all happen here. This is the "free for all" thread. Ask about a game from February 2011 if you want! The other thread will always be specifically about the games released that month, and people can ask questions like "ooh why didn't game X make the list?" "can someone please tell me a bit more about game y, it looks interesting?". Because this thread moves so fast that questions about non-current games, esp if they're not "everlasting" games like Infinity Blade, those questions oftentimes get ignored/not answered, in favour of talking about more current events. The other thread will be the perfect opportunity for people out of the loop to ask questions more freely about past events. We'll have enough helpful people in here to help them out over there, and if we can't answer their questions, we'll invite them over here to ask to hopefully adress more people and maybe someone here will remember/be able to help.
You're just segregating the community for no real benefit to anyone that's a part of it.
Noone's segregating the community. I already said, people who follow this thread can keep following this thread and not care about the other, they won't miss anything, since they're here anyway. The other thread is for NEW people, who are intimidated by this thread or can't afford to follow it closely, who just wanna keep in touch with the iOS scene without reading 5 pages each day. If anything, creating a 2nd thread will BROADEN the audience and bring in new members. If you ALSO want to follow the other thread, you're more than welcome to do so.
As I said, iOS is current, and the people that game on it are constantly looking for the next-big-thing. There aren't that many games that last longer than a week in GAF's mind, so any thread made at the end of the month is hilariously out of date already. Games that are good enough to go beyond that initial-release-hype period and genuinely catch on deserve an OT (a la Super Hexagon) rather than a place in a round-up a month later.
See, I know exactly what you're saying, and I totally agree with everything, which is why THIS THREAD will serve EXACTLY that purpose. What I disagree with is the premise that ALL people think like this. Yes, people like you, me, many in here probably follow this thread closely, see what the hot game of the week is, play it, then forget about it. What you're ignoring is that there are tons of people out there who don't care if a game came out today, a week ago or 2 month ago. If they come in here and ask "guys tell me what good games are out now!" and people only give them info on what came out this week, because it's hot, they'll miss out on all the awesome releases of the past 2, 3, 4 weeks, because this thread has moved on. That doesn't mean those games are bad and not recommendable, that simply means they're not "hot" in this thread right now. They'll be collected at the end of the month and put up for people who are looking for good games. Hell, maybe even one of us regulars misses a game or two, or simply forgets to buy it, and then at the end of the month gets reminded again!
EDIT: That post got way too big...
