This is basically a Putin political move. Sources saying that the pressure for a reconciliation was from the patriarch , much less from the pope, which tell much about how Russia view this thing. Nationalism galore and +5% approval point in the next poll. I hoped the pope would be over this , but maybe he's just a shitty human being like any other in the end.

mending the schism is a big deal.

It's sad that they use this issue to inflate their own flagging importance on the world stage. That's what's really behind all this, organised religion desperately needs a bogeyman to puff out it's chest at to show it's still relevant. Without the huge acceptance of homosexuality in the developed world what else would they have to raise their hands up about; pre-marital sex, contraception? Nah, this is a much better target.

It also makes me physically sick how many conservatives and religious people use the word "family" throughout their bigotry as if gay people aren't part of families and don't have their own families. There's some real disgusting newspeak stuff going on here, especially from politicians who know exactly what they are saying and why.

Please do not let me serve on a jury. I am actually a crazy person.
There's really more than talk about than the non-news of "People who were against gay marriage still are".

Marriage is point #21, by the way. There's also anti-abortion and anti-euthanasia drivel in there, but the main point is that two monolithic organizations which managed not to talk each other for four times the time the current US government has existed are actually talking, which is indeed a big sign that they're not so monolithic anymore and are stepping up to change their place in the modern world.

Which will soon include the various human rights points, in all likeness. They're not really enshrined in doctrine, and churches are what believers want them to be.

Two heads of religion using their first meeting to make a statement against homosexuality is not non news.

As long as the Catholic Church continues to cover up and protect pedophile priests and archbishops, they don't get to make statements on what is good for families or society.

They need to clean up their own goddamn house before lecturing society on social issues.

"Aggressive secularism?" Fuck off, old man.

Going on, the statement says Pope Francis and Kirill are “concerned” about Christians being “confronted by restrictions to religious freedom”.

Secular societies are next on the list, saying that Christians face “outright discrimination”, and that they are faced by an “often very aggressive secularist society”.

They're so oppressed by teh gays and secular society.

The Russian Orthodox Church has been a key supporter of Russia’s anti-gay law, and Patriarch Kirill maintained the Church’s view that homosexuality is a sin – although he has cautioned against punishing people for their sexuality.
Merely cautioned against. Can't even be bothered to preach and finger wag with words stronger than "cautioned", as if LGBT persons in Russia aren't victims of constant assault and harassment by church bannermen.
