Vehicles (at least tanks and planes) are now Class Specific in Battlefield 1

This is actually a good thing. I like it.

EDIT: after reading other peoples point of view, I am now torn on this. I will wait to hear more on it. My favorite games in the series is BF1942 and BF2. I have a feeling this game is going to be absolutely nothing like them. They kept emphasizing close quarters combat on the stream. Has me a little worried that the maps are even smaller that they already are in the recent games.

And we're finally getting design decisions that limit your impact. Thank God.

They still haven't done the thing that I've always wanted which is to impose a flying vehicle restriction to people who have passed a flying vehicle competency course and received a goddamn pilot's license.

Nothing like a bunch of people running to the plane or heli or whatever and then the pilot just fucking crashes the thing 3 seconds after liftoff.

How would it keep bad players out of biplanes? The bad players will just choose the class that flies the biplanes.
Because they would be more inclined to choose a vehicle class that they can actually perform well in. I'd prefer a tank to a biplane for this reason, so it's keeping me out of them for one.

Because then you're not playing your class correctly.

Why should a sniper be anywhere near a tank?
Because sometimes, situationally you need to hop in a vehicle for a few seconds to improvise and provide cover/blow shit up. People will still play their classes incorrectly and not use teamwork. This won't fix it. Situationally using all tools available on the battlefield was already the 'correct' way to play. And it wax awesome

On one hand, it removes that sandbox experience that have been part of the Battlefield series for so long.

On the other hand, fuck every sniper git who has ever existed and taken a fighter/helicopter only to park it ontop of a building or high place so it doesn't respawn and then hang around to snipe people.

Agreed with this.

No argument trumps this IMO.

No, I think this is a good move.

Specialist vehicles, like these slow moving tanks or nimble planes, should be used by players who make the decision to use them. They serve a tactical purpose just like throwing down ammunition, or reviving people.

If you are a 'Driver' class, then your purpose would be to get into a tank and move people around, while also suppressing the enemy with superior fire-power. If you are a 'Pilot' class your job would be to maintain air superiority and place pressure on ground troops.

The genius here, if it is implemented correctly, is that it makes vehicles a much clearer tactical choice. If you choose to be a pilot, presumably that means you aren't a Scout. That means you don't have the option of "Well, if my plane gets blown up, I'll just play the rest of my life as a sniper". No, hopefully you'll be limited to just a pistol. Your effectiveness was as a pilot - get into another plane, or die.

It also doesn't seem to limit other vehicles. I imagine any player will be able to hop onto a horse, or bike, and drive around the map. But if you want to use a vehicle that can change the tide of the battle you have to pick the appropriate class and commit to using it. Good move.

Play in a squad with friends. 99% of the time you and 3 of your friends will win the match for everyone else, have really tense and insane moments of HOLY SHIT doing it.

Really. It's a game.

Let people play how they like. If you don't like pugs then don't pug, I guess?

What you are asking for is that everyone play how YOU want them to play and not how they want to play.

Believe me as a long time BF player I fucking hate people that don't participate, I do. But when my squad is repeatedly the best, at the top of the charts, getting unlocks like mad because we know what we are doing... Guess what? My reward is getting better shit faster. My name at the top of the list. The feeling of satisfaction knowing just a couple of guys managed the entire game for everyone while they all suck.

I'm fine with that.

People hogging vehicles will continue to happen. This solves absolutely nothing but gives people like you an even HIGHER fucking horse because you are now validated for thinking everyone needs to play like you play.

Guess what? They shouldn't have to.

Aww that's disappointing. I haven't been a big battlefield fan but being able to get in vehicles when in trouble and so on is what made me hope on 4 and like it better than call of duty

Dumb idea. Limiting choices for players is never a good idea. Yes a lot of people do stupid things yet so many other players, regardless of class, have a different playstyles. Classes are just load out for players to use. It doesn't define exactly what they'll always be doing on the field. Just because I'm engineer doesn't mean i'll always be attacking vehicles. I could be trying to take an objective while having the option to take down a vehicle if it approaches. Same goes for every other class.

On top of that, I hope that entering a vehicle as another a class turns you into said pilot or driver.

That would be a viable solution in my opinion. Everybody can enter a combat vehicle (tank/plane), but if you do so, you end up with a 'crippled' kit, e.g. only a pistol and a wrench to repair. This would combat people taking vehicles to get somewhere and then ditching them while it still offers most of the options of the classic system. Noncombat vehicles should not be affected by this of course. The guy in the video specifically said there are four classes, non of which was a driver/pilot. He then said if you spawn in a vehicle, you become a 'driver', so maybe what I wrote above isn't that far from what the system will actually be.

I'd still prefer the classic system though, I've had so many crazy moments with entering and leaving vehicles spontaneously.

Not a fan of that at all. I love having the choice of using a variety of vehicles and weapons at my whim. Super disappointing.

Eh that's disappointing. This is a game imo where you don't limit that player choice and this "solution" really doesn't solve anything.

Thank fucking god.

After hundreds of hours with Battlefield 4, this is one of my biggest gripes.

I'm so goddamn sick of people wasting vehicles, and hopefully this will fix that problem.

A+++. I've got high hopes for this game.

This is true for all the battlefields honestly but most of us have found I am sure that it only takes like two to four dudes actually playing with teamwork, PTFO, to totally dominate a game.
I could go into a game with a team getting wasted with a couple friends and completely turn it around just by sticking together in our squad. and I'm not a pro player at all.

you can't ever eliminate those useless people doing god knows what but if you get into a decent squad it's worth the stay.

Exactly. This isn't change that will force teamwork. People will do whatever they want regardless.

Really though, they limit player choice all over the game already: classes, weapons, unlocks. It's already far from a free-for-all. Wait and see how it is implemented.

I will but I do feel no matter what any player should be able to use a vehicle regardless of class

^^^the land vehicle issue is small in comparison to the incompetents trying to fly around.

Design decision to limit the game. That's all this is.

Class based shooters are predicated on the fact that choosing a class imparts limitations. The best choice of action could be to go out with a med packs and ammo packs, c4, Carl Gustav, and an lmg with an underslung grenade launcher, but you can't. The whole point is to give classes unique playstyles and this decision further establishes that.

Honestly I think this might more be a weird solution to not having a useless infantry class in non-vehicle gamemods and maps. In Battlefield 4 engis were in the pretty awkward situation of having weapons great for close range fighting, but no gear to go with it

that being said, I wonder how the regular 4 classes will deal with vehicles. One of them needs some anti-vehicle option at least

I miss wing riding in bf1942 =(

Battlefield is all about jumping off a 5 meter tall roof using your parachute, riding on the wings of a bomber plane to drop off over the enemy base, putting a jeep full of TNT and driving it into an enemy AA gun, flipping a helicopter upon take off 50 times before you learn how to fly in desert combat and trying to drop bombs onto the enemy tank with your ww2 plane, only to get shot as the pilot and have your plane turn into a paper plane physics wise.

I also miss stunt clans from bf1942

If dice are really continuing with the battlefront reboot type of design then they've gone completely off the rails.

This person right here gets what Battlefield is all about.

LMAO OP is like NOPE deal breaker and literally every post is "omg what a great idea!" bet you didn't expect that when you made this thread lol

So people in the other thread "I want a super realistic WW1 game; not another Battlefield game" people in this thread "screw realism, I want this game to play like every Battlefield game before it". Really hope DICE sticks to their guns and accepts only criticism that pertains to bugs/balancing - as usual the gaming community is bipolar and will never universally agree on anything.

.

You no longer get to be a Support player and fly a plane just because you ran to one first. If you're a Support player we need you on the ground, if you want to be a Pilot we need you in the air. You make a choice regarding how you want to help your team and the game holds you to it.

I don't need people hijacking tanks, vehicles that can sway the tide of the battle, just so that they can take it nowhere. If you want to travel get on a bike. If you want to use a tank, make the choice to use a tank via your class, and help the team by using that tank.

Right. They never even allowed you to pick up kits from fallen enem... Oh... Nevermind.

Part of the fun of Battlefield is doing insanely stupid shit and pulling it off with a single life. I've done this with vehicle swaps and kit swaps plenty. The absolute insanity is what gives the game it's standout moments. It's flexibility, allowing you to adapt and capitalize on an enemy's bad decision to leave a tank. To run a diversion with a plane even though you suck at flying so you are just bait. To vehicle hop and decimate an entire team on your lonesome because you don't suck.

You know, shit that Battlefield is KNOWN FOR. Sudden, reluctant outbursts of MAYHEM to turn the tide. That's Battlefield. Not this "you can't use that" bullshit.

As usual different people have different opinions and painting an entire thread in one broad brush is dumb.

It's a bad decision and takes away what makes Battlefield stand out from the rest.

Battlefield 2 had more unique and restricting class roles than 3 and 4 and yet they didn't limit vehicles per class.
