Thanks guys! Looks like I'll have to get the DVDs. Well, I've heard good things, and I haven't seen the original Eva in years, so I'm excited. :>

Gunbuster has one of my favorite endings in anything ever, so if there's a chance that Diebuster is better, I guess I'd better watch and find out ASAP.

I really liked Gunbuster. The first half is a little slow, but there's this nuanced sort of optimism and admiration for both space and mankind's ability to overcome the odds. I felt a similar kind of emotion in Honneamise. That film is a more complex achievement, but Gunbuster's genre sincerity is heartwarming in a different way.

Looking forward to the future.

I can't say that Diebuster is definitively better, but I can say it's my favorite sequel of all time. Oddly enough I loathed it the first time I finished it, but going back and watching Gunbuster, then immediately following it with Diebuster really opened my eyes. Out of curiousity, have you seen the other Gainax classic, Nadia (2/3 of a classic, anyway)? I'd really like to see that redrawn and without the filler eps...but keep dat OP!

That gif is terrible looking. And that file size! I hate you for this.

My PC kept crashing so I said "fuck it". Out of curiosity is there a way to shed off mb's in a gif without making it microscoptic? That's been pissing me off for a while.

Yeah, you have to cut frames if you want to maintain a certain resolution at a respectable size. And what do you mean by microscopic? 320 x 180?

And what was better? I liked Diebuster but it was clearly inferiorer for me. Weaker storytelling, characters, arts and without any deeper background elements.

Diebuster's soundtrack is pretty great.

My main problem with both works is that they take about three episodes to get to the interesting part. That's too long for six-episode OVAs.

What pizzaroll said, minus the music. Beyond the River of Time is my favorite anime song ever.
With that said, I don't think Diebuster is or isn't better than the original. I view them as a whole,
as one story,
and that's pretty much how I feel about that (in my best Forrest Gump voice).

I find the first three episodes of Diebuster to be far superior (if still not great but good) to the first three episodes of Gunbuster, which are kinda horrible.

This is ridiculous and you know it.
No.

No way! The first two episodes of Gunbuster allow you to absorb the absurdity of robot calisthenics, Rocky references, the Gainax bounce, etc.

And for Diebuster I was just floored by the visuals and trying to figure things out/find connections to Gunbuster, and there was enough action early on IMO.

Topless action! The early episodes were good. It's just that we didn't get to the world-breaking stuff until later, which is fine.

I understand the reason for the long buildup in both series, I just think it could have been done substantially better.

Speaking of the Gainax bounce, the unnecessary creepy fanservice does detract from both series. At the very least it makes the stories appear much more shallow than they actually are.

Yeah, those last few episodes? Not a good way to end a series. Especially a really awesome series such as this. Despite the really rough ending I enjoyed this show a lot. It's definitely one of the better romantic comedies that I've seen. I really felt invested in the story and in Arima's and Yukino's relationship. There's actual progress in their story, which I feel is something that I hardly see in anime nowadays when it comes to this genre. It was really nice to see their bond grow through out the show. Even the supporting characters and their personal stories were really entertaining.

But yeah, I dunno what else to say. It was a great show that was definitely brought down by a disappointing ending. I'm probably gonna start the manga pretty soon so hopefully that'll give me a better perspective of the series. But man, a second season to this would own.

Also, Yukino is still da bessss

Everything is tsundere to me
Jesus, I can't keep up with this thread anymore. I read everything form my last post, though. Thank God I have no plans to watch Nise

Moretsu Pirates 8

It's still good, but the slowness of the plot progression is starting to wear on me just a bit. Also, Marika's total
pussying out at the very mention of ROYALTY
made me very disappoint. Come on Marika! You're supposed to be a dread pirate! Terror of the heavens! And then you have a stowaway and you don't treat her like the ransom bait she is? I am very, very disappoint...

Well, maybe I just have some high expectations for the show, considering they they DO have to live up to the pirates we all know and love. Not like...

High School DxD 8

What the fuck is going on, and why am I getting a hoot out of it? This is wrong... I KNOW it's terrible, but I can't for the life of me look away, but it's not like in a train wreck sort of way... it's like... it's like they put JUST enough "good" into the show to make me believe in my heart of hearts that it's going to be an objectively GOOD show. I'm... I'm so confused... ;____;

You will never be a Demon Harem King like Raiser Phoenix. Feels bad man.

I honestly can't imagine that Diebuster was actually conceived as a sequel to Gunbuster. I imagine GAINAX just realised that was a good way to cash-in on a successful product name.

Really? There's too many parallels for me to think it started as something completely different.

Amazon isn't making me feel good about purchasing Birdy The Mighty Decode. More items to consider includes: Highschool of the Dead, Strike Witches, Sacred Blacksmith and Samurai Girls. It's enough to make me reconsider my order!

The Sacred Blacksmith isn't nearly as bad as the other three in the realm of the service departments. However, the manga has a super dark turn in it that isn't in the show at all.

Good lord, what the hell did I just watch? It was so ridiculous. I...I think there was a plot in there. Is this the definition of "not giving a fuck"? Like, I enjoyed the film but if the sound direction and art were not what they were, the movie would have been awful.

The art really was impressive. If there was CG in there, it didn't bother me at all. If it was more cell-shading than CG, we need more of it. This was also a seriously LOUD movie. So glad I decided to watch it at my friend's on HIS sound system rather than mine. His subwoofer did the movie justice. The music was really hit and miss for me but nothing to really complain about.

It's crazy just how many plot points were carved in and maybe the director was like "figure it out, it's not hard". I mean, there's a redemption story in there, an actual love story, friendship, pride. Even political strategy? In a movie with probably a whole lot of unnecessary, the whole
miner rebellion/super weapon thing
seemed really unnecessary but whatever.

Redline: 30 plot points crammed into 102 minutes, with thumping sound and gorgeous animation on the side.

I give it a B.

Bodacious Space Stowaways 08:

I may have said this before and if so I apologize, but despite not being classified as a comedy when BSP does go for laughs it gives me a very Slayers vibe. Not because the jokes are even remotely similar, but like Slayers the jokes are not about clever punchlines, but the absurdity of a situation. In just this episode we have:
Marika having trouble convincing someone in her crew to escort the Princess to the bridge while she watches this unfold in amusement, said Princess later introducing herself as a transfer student with no hint of shyness or attempt to hide her identity, the reactions of Marika and the Princess to Misa's driving, etc.
The major difference is that the reactions are far less pronounced between shows because BSP isn't trying to be a comedy. At least, I think it isn't. :/ Throw in a few facevaults and Dragon Slaves and this would be the real successor to Slayers that Lost Universe wishes it were.

That's not to mention how in the early episodes we had just the idea of Marika, an inexperienced commoner who works as a maid in a cafe, being thrown into the Captain's chair of a legal space pirate ship simply by virtue of being the former Captain's daughter, a shootout in a cafe with Chiaki fighting them off and dragging Marika away all while finishing off her Parfait, the bureaucracy scene when Marika chooses to take over the ship, the scenes with her changing into her pirate gear and making her way awkwardly dodging random boxes etc. just to get to the bridge, the soothsayer like character on the bridge who keeps saying "I can see it," but doesn't offer what she's seeing like, ever, etc. Just the very bizarre situations set up for humorous purposes, but no punchline. All it's missing is the facevaults. And the Dragon Slaves. ^^;

7 hand drawn years really does look good, that's not CG you're seeing!

People weren't kidding with the Sailormoon - Usagi thing, she's even got a title of "Princess Serenity", that's got to have been on purpose.

Ah yes, and Chiaki Omigawa's character likes talking alot, Oh. Dear. God.

Every time I look at Amazon UK's anime selection it makes me sad. No Blu Rays for anything except Ghibli and stuff I don't watch :(

At least the DVDs are getting ridiculously cheap now. All of Ouran for £8.50 is a damn good deal, for instance. But for newer series, especially those where I know they're getting Blu Ray releases in English in the States, it's still sad.

Time to invest in a region A player. And buy the UK Redline.

Also don't get the UK Ghibli BDs unless you like DNR!!!!

Digital noise reduction = removing grain & the fine detail that comes with it, turning a beautiful transfer into a pasty mess

Removing detail sounds bad, but why would there be grain in an anime? I can understand it being in an older film transfer, but you could argue it doesn't belong there either. (apart from an intentional effect, which wouldn't make sense to remove)

Because it was shot on film?

Why wouldn't it be there? Old anime was shot on actual film, the grain is part of the picture.

At least the manga art is really good, even if the characters are cardboard cut outs and the author can't stop masturbating about GLORIOUS NIHON KATANA!

Manga's art? Not really. It's distinctly average at best from what I've seen (mainly pages from that infamous rape scene*).

*which was later redacted as being sorta-rape

Branduil

If they could remove that grain without losing detail, would you approve?

There's no actual way to do that which wouldn't involve remastering the entire film with modern digital compositing tools. Also they probably don't even have all the original materials in most cases.

Just because it's part of the picture doesn't mean it belongs there, just look at SHAFT redoing half their episodes!

That's a slippery slope!

To be fair, I haven't read past the first few chapters, but the backgrounds were really nice, and the characters and monsters looked really good as well, maybe the quality drops later on.

That's impossible though. Grain makes up the detail of film.

That's why I said if!
