Yooka-Laylee |OT| Reptile Rolling in the 90’s

Good News: I'm not glitched.

I got everything left but the boss battle in the Casino.

My two missing tokens were in that sonar room behind a pillar and in the roulette room, it was tucked by a corner and the room was gold, so I missed it.

So I'm all set to continue onward.

I do want to say though...

FUCK HIJINX HURDLES.

The camera is shit.
I dealt with lag and timing mishaps.

I beat Rextro's high score but that game is hot garbage. Good riddance I don't need to play it again.

I have noticeable input lag on my PS4 Pro. I can sense it even in the main menu of the game.
It's so annoying that i stopped playing after 10 minutes :(

Anyone else with problems on the PS4 Pro?

YES. I'm noticing really irritating input lag and I'm also on a PS4 Pro with boost mode enabled. I have my TV on game mode and every other game works fine. This is really game breaking for me. The jumping and moving is so unresponsive.

Help?

Yeah it feels and controls like shit, I'm waiting for a patch hopefully. Needs to be an option to disable auto camera centering as well before I can stand it.

Playing on a PS4 Pro and have none of this whatsoever. I did have a problem that was causing the exact same issues with other games at random times and that turned out to be my wireless router causing interference with my PS4 Controller and my system. Apparently some routers broadcast their non 5G WIFI signals at the same frequency as the PS4 controller's Bluetooth signal that communicates with the system. I would unplug my router and the issue would instantly go away.

The long term solution was to get a different router brand as since switching that out, the problem has never come back. Just for giggles, next time you see that happening, unplug your modem/router and see if you still have the problem.

Hmmm, I'll give that a try. Also, do you know if plugging your controller directly into the PS4 turns off bluetooth or is it like the PS3 and it would still use it even though you were hooked directly up to it via USB?

I believe it does strictly use USB at that point, but if I recall, there's a setting in the PS4 firmware someplace to tell the system to only use USB for the controller, and not bluetooth.

Platinumed the game on a PS4 Pro and felt it was relatively very smooth and mostly consistent throughout. Any hitching was so specious and acceptably rare that it was largely ignored. Your situation sounds very unique to mine.

I've kept playing and my impressions are overall positive despite indeed the famous rough edges.

I've enjoyed world 2 (unexpanded) quite a lot. Great atmosphere, structure and music, with pretty good pagies in general. My first impression was "this is too big", but actually Glitterglaze Glacier seems like a Tooie level... done right. It surely is big but the layout of the level is well designed, with an open area well communicated by several caves and tunnels so you don't really spend more than a minute or so traversing it from one side to another. I particularly loved Glooming Gem Grotto (I didn't find it that challenging, unfair or long as people claimed at all) and the platforming sections near the lake. Also, most of the challenges can be completed the first time you get to them, so you don't really have to go and come here and there as much as in Tooie.

Having said that, is in this world 2 where the low budget of the game really starts to be noticed: the physics of the icy slopes, the animations of the bees, the rough control of the snowplough, the confuse behaviour of the eye-like enemies, the fact that you can break crates, rocks and barrels but they don't have a breaking animation (instead, they "die", like enemies, probably because those objects can be possesed by the eyes) and so on. Until now they surely are not game breaking things, but even though I've been absolutely aware of Playtonic's indie condition, I wasn't expecting little shabby details like those.

However, the truth is that I'm finding the game incredibly fun and I think it has an amazing pace. I start playing and time flies by, because getting quills and pagies is so addictive. Can't say the same of Banjo-Tooie or DK64.

I updated the game and now the title screen won't let me press X to get past it. Anyone else having this problem?

for what its worth, I think this world has the worst of it. Theres constant areas in the water that look like crevices to hide collectibles in but are actually just clumsily designed together scenery. For example a small cavern entrance close to the dicepad platforming section that looks totally enterable, but when you swim in theres nothing there and camera goes haywire because the area is so cramped. Its such a weird oversight

There are no performance issues....DF (I believe) tested them all post patch and the PS4 version for sure and I believe the Xbone version too run at a rock solid 30fps all the time.

EDIT- Play mine on a PS4 Pro and ive had no framerate issues at all, just the camera stuff mentioned below that is easily figured out after playing it for a short time.

This was my experience as well until I got to World 4. I then started experiencing regular bad stuttering. The issue happens in earlier worlds while flying too. Using the Reptile Rush in a lot of areas also causes serious issues. I used it in the Icymetric Palace to knock down that wooden door and the FPS dropped to around 2. Happens every time I charge it.

Has it really changed so much?

It has. Mentioning some bonus stuff, gold medals or post game content in a few games doesn't change that. There are more checkpoints, auto saves, lower difficulty and fewer do overs in modern gaming in general.

However, the truth is that I'm finding the game incredibly fun and I think it has an amazing pace. I start playing and time flies by, because getting quills and pagies is so addictive. Can't say the same of Banjo-Tooie or DK64.

It has much better pacing, better platforming and less aimless wandering than Tooie (or DK64 for that matter). And it's nice to see some love for it in both yours and other posts :)

That's true. On the other hand if they made it too simple it could potentially be even more game breaking.

I'm about an hour and a half into this and I'll be honest, I'm not loving it,for the reasons already mentioned in the last 2k posts

Shame. I was really looking forward to it and bought it despite the reviews.

Too bad I bought it on PSN and not Steam, can't get my money back.

I like it :O Once I got it I moved through the levels that way as much as possible. Freedom!!!

I defeated the final boss today. I really enjoyed it. The animations are very cool... That intro was a triumphant Rare moment. :)

The fight was on the easy side but still satisfying and funny in a way. Had it been as punishing as Gruntilda in BK or King K. Rool in DK64 people would riot, haha!

Still a few pieces to collect but I can already say this exceeded any expectations I had in that it's a worthy game in that exclusive family of platformers. Feels like it was made for me. It was a nice ride, Playtonic! <3 Would p(l)ay again.

I'm glad I still have 4 pagies to find. ;)

Its just trying to aim for a collectable or land on a small platform, when you approach the camera makes it impossible to actually see the object, you just start circling around it trying to turn inwards or whatever.

Its fine if your just cruising around someplace, but precision is only frustrating because of the camera.

Loving this game! Just got to world 2 and can't wait to go forward.

Thanks to Playtonic for bringing this game to life!

I actually laugh when I try to make a jump and miss haha. Feels like old times and then when I make the jump successfully it feels good.

Anyone know how to take down Inept enemies? I need to kill 10 for the tonic for the cheevo.

Also the quality assurance bit Laylee said fucking slayed me. Her savagery and puns know no bounds.

I understand what you mean, but what if it was done in this specific way for a reason? It should be relatively simple letting the player rotate the camera completely (like you can in most of the game), so why don't they let you do that? Kinda like implementing wall jumping in a 2D platform game should be relatively simple to an experienced team, so why did they make it so difficult to pull off in Super Metroid?

I'm not trying to explain away the flaws, because obviously the camera has issues. Just trying to say that if they made too easy and controllable when using that ability, it would break some challenges in the game if you get it too soon (it already does in some cases), so maybe they were aware of that and tried to implement restrictions on how usable the ability would be.

It's a mistake, there's no way you'd design it like that. Making it harder because you can't see what your doing would be stupid.

I mean it's fine the majority of the time, but there's been a few places where it's just bad.

If you've already hit World 4 then you can take them out easily while transformed. Otherwise you'll probably need to find a berry bush in order to attack them.
Haha I didn't realise you could berry bush them until after my post. Grabbed a couple kills when I was cleaning up World 1.

You guys weren't kidding with World 4. Not a fan of this place at all. The mine cart section and the boss of the world was absolute hell to play.

I noticed that when flying you tend to drift towards the right because Yooka is using his right hand to hold Laylee. Strange design decision from them if Playtonic did this on purpose.

I had problems with the mine cart section but not because it was bad - because I was bad :D.

The boss was cool and I had fun with it. For some reason it felt menacing because of its cool design. Took me 3 tries because I made stupid mistakes in the first phase.

Boss ranking:
Final boss > world 4 boss > world 3 boss > world 2 boss > world 1 boss > world 5 boss

Can't wait to replay the game with that mysterious 64 bit mode. I've come to the conclusion that there's almost no unfair or really bad designed challenge in Yooka Laylee because, looking back, I actually had fun with all of it. The racing minigame from world 1 being the exception. Even that wasn't hard at all, just much too floaty.

My revised ranking of the worlds:
5 > 3 > 4 > 2 > 1

I like all of them and the casino gets a bad rap for whatever reason. It's actually quite cool.

Best characters in the game:
- Depressed shopping carts in world 3
- frogs in world 5
- The skeleton and the pot
- The poor ass-teroid in world 5

I think I'll need to relay DK64 again after this.

After an excruciating 19 days, the Yooka-Laylee rap is available for purchase on Grant Kirkhope's Bandcamp. I know a lot of us here fell into a deep depression when we discovered this masterful piece was not on the soundtrack, but now we can finally start getting our lives back together.

Yeah it sucks, hopefully it gets patched soon. I think I am down 3 whole Pagies, I can't find anything I haven't done now.. :S

I am also finished with the game now, yesterday I did the final boss. I had some problems with the fourth phase, because my stamina was regenerating too slowly and I did not see a good way of avoiding being hit by the missiles. After perfecting all other phases, it wasn' a problem though, but there should be a way to do the last phase without being hit as well, right?

My rankings:

Worlds:
3>5>1>>2>>4

Bosses:
3>4>final>5>2>1

Rextro:
5>4>2>3>>1

Favourite character: Rextro

Overal game: 9/10

Just got the platinum. That last pagie in the hub was really well hidden.

I really liked the game overall. There was some BS though like some collectables not being there until you expand the world even when you can access the location. Like the World 1 Pirate Treasure. I was so mad when I found it since I had already looked there way back when I started.

Actually the pirate treasure is still there in unexpanded World 1, I didn't expand any of the worlds while doing a speedrun and still grabbed it.

Finished it yesterday. I found the last boss hard, beat it on my last health. Unless I'm missing some secret to guiding the missiles more easily. Also it took me a few deaths to even figure out what you're supposed to do in the first and second phases.

Got all the quills and upgrades but I'm missing 4 pagies (1 in the hub, 1 in world 2, 1 in world 4 and 1 in world 5)

Does the Hunter tonic help with tokens in Cashino? I'm missing a SINGLE one and it's going to be hell to find it.

Overall I really enjoyed it. I'm not sure if it's BK level because it's been ages since I played it... a replay is in order. Biggest flaw for me would be the flight is too overpowered, should have been given later. At least they made it somehow unwieldy.

The Moodymaze Marsh actually has a pretty interesting approach in terms of level design and the challenges themselves are quite fun. It's a shame that this level looks so terribly bland and ugly coming from the beautiful Glitterglaze Glacier.

Up to this point I think that my main issue with the game (something that is probably a consecuence of both the budget and the Unity engine) is how things and elements react to Yooka's moves and his presence. I'm not very happy with enemy collisions and animations, as well as with most of the in-game physics. Which is odd, because on the other hand I feel that controlling Yooka and the way he runs, jumps, double-jumps, rolls, glides and swims is very enjoyable. Is the interaction with environmental hazards and enemies what I find unsatisfying.

I'd agree that the control was fine and mostly satisfying but the general feedback from attacks and such was incredibly lacking, the final boss being a perfect example at first of "am I actually doing anything?" because it's that shoddy.

it doesnt help that sometimes a boss phase is absurdly long for no reason compared to the rest of the fight like the first phase in world 4s boss or the second phase for the final boss. The latter especially left me unsure the entire time through my first go due to its length and lack of decent feedback

The game is missing a ton of feedback, whether for game feel or giving information to the player. The world 1 and 2 boss battles are basically a lesson on how not to design boss battles. I think there's a lot of amateurish design and lack of polish in this game to be frank, a lot of quick and dirty Unity stuff that reminds me of playing classmate's projects when I took a gaming dev course in college.

I'm also not a fan of them gating off stuff for later level power-ups (fine in the hub), and I think it would've been better if each level just used the powers you unlock in that level. A couple times now I've done a subsection where they just close off the Pagie at the very end making you waste your time platforming to it, and I haven't even entered level 3 yet.

Despite those things and a bunch of other minor gripes, I'm actually enjoying it quite a bit. Controlling Yooka is the game's saving grace, it just feels great to just move around and jump on shit. It's admittedly very refreshing to play a sandbox platformer again, especially on PC where I can rock 1440p 60+fps.

Why are the obstacles of the slide on a global timer?
Why are you not healed when you get sent back to the start if you lose and you may need to try again with 1-2 health points?
Why can the camera turn around and face you if you slide near an obstacle/edge instantly ending the run because it messes up your speed control?
Why do the edges of the slide send you slightly upwards and kill all your momentum if you get hit into them if you slide into them from a higher level instead of sliding you down?
WHY CAN YOU MISS THE RINGS?!

Jesus, I know some people got past it easily, but this might legit be the single worst 3d platforming challenge I've ever played (and yes, I finished it) I've enjoyed a couple parts of the game a lot, but some others...

I prepared for the worst after hearing horrible things about that challenge. In the end I really enjoyed it because after "getting" that you have to slow down near every drop (to the next lane - so you can immediately speed up again) I finished it after two more attempts. With 2 seconds left, even.

It reminds me of the slide races (against bugs) in DK64, which I loved back then. I wish they'd put in something like that, too.

I got that off the 'bat' :(. Doesn't help when half my runs ended on the first obstacle (where you can't really catch the timing if you retry as soon as you restart and it's, again, on a global cycle) or the straight-away near the end. It's just another annoyance when you need to speed up to make up for going slow at a part, you hit an obstacle, it knocks you backwards diagonally onto the edge of the slide, and that makes you slide diagonally back even further.
