Halo |OT14| They call it Halo

If I were to oversimplify it...

Destiny is Halo + Guild Wars. Persistent co-operative world with a first person shooter's gameplay and an MMO's social functionality.

The main gameplay will probably be Firefight-esque with the ability to play versus. Whether it'll be "PvP zones" or if we'll be able to select Halo-style maps to play it on (which would mean the possibility of an updated Forge) remains to be seen.

The heavy persistence and possibly heavy use of AI means they'll be using servers to host players and handle the AI, since they probably are not going to have the entire game use lockstep (it'd play terribly). On the other hand, there's only 3 classes.. so technically you can have a full compliment with only 3 players. Hmm.

Thought this was interesting in the Polygon article.

"Even in story mode, you will encounter other players on their own adventures, inhabiting and affecting the same world," Hirshberg says.

Certainly seems like it needs that online connection for good reason then.

Game kind of feels like Killzone meets more recent Halo (Reach and 4) in terms of art...

Have to say vidocs are a love/hate thing for me...

New info (kinda)... Yay

On the other hand

"We're building something alive, it has a nature that we don't totally control. Things are going to happen that we don't plan and that's amazing."

MAJOR ROLLEYES

That last sentence strikes me as transparent. I feel that Bungie recognized that giving the player more direct control of the game options provides a healthier meta. The players will be able to customize rulesets and/or build geometry and landscapes. Probably both.

The colours in Destiny look to have yellow/brown filters though... lawl.

You're right. They've probably gone the same route. I'm just tired of it I guess. The UI looks decent. Going to have to praise the UI designers for that. It's clean, simple. Plus it seems it carries the same dynamic that the Reach UI had for backgrounds.

Though I'm a bit turned off by the social, mobile and always connected aspects. I just don't enjoy those types of games much. But can't judge a book by it's cover.

So next-gen/pc is not confirmed at this time right? Only xbox 360/ps3?

What is also freaking great about that UI is that it looks functional for iOS/Ipad too.

It's like UI porn.

Enjoyable even for the tired, impatient and distracted
Bungie said that a player's mindset when they come into games is that they don't want to work hard or read too much. They want to feel things they don't feel in their otherwise everyday lives. This pillar in particular influenced Bungie to put a huge investment into their UI design. They had to throw out dearly held ideas because it just wouldn't work with all players.

One of the pillars Bungie made for the game (according to Kotaku)

I wonder if it'll work like Fable 3 where you see indicators of other players nearby, but they're not actually in your play space with you unless you attempt to connect with them in some way. This whole "shared world" stuff sounds intriguing. I wonder if players can become notorious among the game populations for accomplishing certain things before other players, like fancy leaderboards or something.

Destiny’s multiplayer modes, both competitive and cooperative, are designed to be seamlessly merged with its single-player experience. Players will come together and adventure together naturally, Bungie promises, without visible matchmaking. They’ll pair up in the City’s Overwatch district, form bonds, visit distant worlds. At times, they’ll cross paths with strangers, their separate adventures overlapping to become one.

Goddamn. So it looks like it's pretty much an actual MMO.

Honestly, I'm disappointed and I don't really want to invest in these type of games.

I guess i'll wait for more information but I'm not impressed so far.

This bit from the Destiny IGN article stuck out and really resonated with me, and I think this kind of philosophy is part of why I respect Jason Jones so much. That he's out there talking about keeping the hardcore interested at this point in their PR plan is great.

He also made a point to emphasize that Destiny seeks to appease everyone from shooter neophytes to hardcore FPS players. “All core activities can be enjoyed by a novice player,” Jones promised. That, he intimated, is not hard. “What’s hard is keeping it interesting for your advanced players.”

But uh, maybe show the game next time. Wednesday, maybe?

Sure, we don't know, but if you look at the weapon scopes, it kinda looks like ADS scopes.

That's a pretty big jump to conclusions. I don't have a problem with ADS if the game is paced around it, but it's not a mechanic that would have ever worked with Halo as it is has been conceived

I am impressed, but typically I have always avoided these kinds of games. I dont want a game to become too big of a timesink or to involve grinding dungeons and so on.

Will play it but avoid doing more than scratching the surface depending on how heavy it is.

So assuming this comes out for the Next Xbox, Ps4, 360, and PS3; which is HaloGAF getting?

if the next gen versions aren't insanely different I'm going to cheapest.. so ps3

I would still love a PC version but that's gonna be awhile... probably not til the second game comes

Oh yes, pretty good statement.
New Xbox.

Someone quote this post, I don't think the new quote highlighting is working for me.

Quoted.

And I will decide for which console I will buy it after I know the new consoles and the releasedates of everything

Waypoint/Smartglass looks fucking gorgeous on an iPad. I wish I could control the actual game with it.

Edit: oops I posted without reading the context. I assumed we were talking about Halo my bad wont happen again

(Destiny UI is beyond gorgeous.)

Bungie, you coulda just sent an email.

The ARG and hype was pretty OTT for what they showed.

On a sidenote: Im almost certain the space combat in Reach was a testbed for what they have planned with Destiny, I hope im wrong, but I can see it playing out in that sort of way. The whole reveal screams of ambition which I just dont see them pulling off based on the history of their games. They need to make a fully open world and universe (or at least solar system) for this kind of game. I can see it being a lot smaller in scope than they make it sound. I imagine it being quite linear once you choose a quest.

Jeff talking about how they kept saying there were Dungeons and even used the term raid. They also mentioned you could interact while playing with each other. So yea that confirms it. They're trying to avoid saying MMO but it's kind of an MMO Lite.
