what more can be done? If Zelda: TP, at this point, isn't the best barometer for Wiimote usage, please school me as to what is.
there wasnt a single tool, dungeon or boss fight in the game that took full advantage of the Wiimote

that's proof enough that Zelda TP is not using the wiimote to it's potential.

Why are there people talking about Kingdom Hearts in a Dragon Quest thread?

Good question since KH is a great game series but has nothing to do with future Dragon Quests. Unless they make a Dragon Quest vs Kingdom Hearts

and to further prove that point.. you could easily do a simple port of dq8 to the wii without changing anything.

the only legit complaint i can see about puting it on wii is that the graphical upgrade would be sort of modest.

You are jumping to conclusions.

Point for menus, who you want to attack, etc.

then what do you understand by menus? if he just meant Equipment menus, and such, well, it wouldn't be that bad (if we're talking about US DQ8 menus, that is;because i for one, prefer classic menus)

Uh, point & click is much faster and simpler than menu scrolling.
when you have to select a command out of pages with 12 spells in like 1/4 of the screen, i'm not so sure about that.

I think Horii is pissed and going to settle the score with Sakaguchi this Tuesday :)

but it would. DQ fans like the way that DQ looks and plays already, why would Sqiuare-Enix rock the boat?

I think the question is what percentage of fans of the series would care and be affected. Japanese fans of the game would play it regardless of how it controls, hell if it required you to throw the damn remote against the TV for control they wouldn't care and still play it.

Honestly, I doubt a significant percentage of the fanbase would be affected and not buy the game because of this. By significant, I am sure it would be a number less than 1% of the fans.

Maybe not, but I sure don't want to aim again using the regular controllers.

Does Square-Enix ususally put out newspaper ads when talking about the announcement of Dragon Quest games? Particularly if they're remakes?

I'm thinking more and more that this is more than just a remake or a DS iteration, and DQIX will be announced for the PS2.

you obviously haven't played the wii. the wii pointer is as pixel perfect precise as it gets. choosing commands would be easier with this.

Dragon Quest will definitely help Wii out in Japan. Im not sure of the ramifications in the rest of the world as DQ popularity outside of Japan isnt exactly on fire. But if they do it right, and really promote the game, it will interest the non-gamers as well as those who have given DQ the cold shoulder before.

after playing Zelda for 15 hours, i still find myself selecting equipment with the analog stick rather than pointing at the screen. i'm not putting in doubt the pixel perfect precision of the wiimote.

It's too early for a DQ9 anouncement for any of the next gen systems.

If there's a DQ9 announcement its going to be for the PS2. (or maybe even the DS)

Much like DQ4 for the nes, DQ6 for the snes and DQ7 for the PS which all came at the end of the previous generation and the begining of the current.

I think a PS2 announcement for DQIX is the most likely scenario. It would be too soon to make such a bombshell decision for a newly launched console. It might get moved to Wii in the future when solid hardware trends indicate such a move, but not right now.

Of course, assuming the announcement IS DQIX.

He never said it would be the only control option available, yet your comment was regarding how you didn't want to have to point at everything, ruling out the possibility of there being a non-pointing version of the controls. Just because the controls let you point, doesn't mean that will be the only option available. Zelda: TP on Wii is a perfect example... I can point-and-click if I wish, or I can navigate every single menu with the analog stick. I just don't think you should rule options out.

Probably will be for the PS2 or even PS3, but if it is for the Wii ... that would be crazy for sure. Assuming of course the annoucement is even about DQ9 for any platform.

It could easily just be an announcement for DQ remake for the DS for instance. That would make a lot of sense looking at FFIII's sales.

Probably the original DQ remade in 3d for the DS.

DQ9? It's coming to a Playstation console, no doubt. SE will make an original game for the Wii only if the Wii sells gangbusters like the DS.

That would be the correct answer. I would think that DQ is the biggest money maker for SE like it was for Enix, to sell it in a small userbase would be bad business.

Anyhow, consider this, SE has said recently that they are going to support each console evenly.

So for the PS3:
FFXIII
FFXIII Versus
VP 3?
Mana Series?

For the Wii:
FF:CC
DQ:S
? Best Guess DQ? despite what i said, but DQ would be interchangeable with the Mana Series on the PS3 imo
KH3?

For the 360:
SE untitled MMO
? Chrono Trigger Series?
? Front Mission Game?

Project Sylpheed
:lol

My only prediction about this announcement is that it will lead this thread to disappointment.

1. They already said the Wii spinoff would be playable.
2. The Wii spinoff already has been playable.
3. The message says they're announcing a new game.

Again you're confused about what DQ is all about. DQ is all about the monsters, the classic interface, the classic dungeons, the spells, the NPCs, the quirky light-hearted humor, the lack of a serious teenybopper romance storyline (like those found in the FF games), the casino mini-games, etc. Changing the control scheme to fit the wiimote would have no affect on DQ tradition.

And besides, being able to point at what monster you want to attack is pretty ****ing cool. (still menu-based combat, just saying that instead of selecting the monster with the analog stick, you can just point at it and click A).

I'm sure that if DQ9 hit the Wii, it would have both classic and wiimote control schemes.

If I had to guess about this mystery announcement i am going to say it is a brand new Wii DQ spinoff. Square Enix has disappointed me too often in terms of DQ remakes. The only plausible remake at this point would be DQ6 w/ DQ8's system (But didn't DQ5 remake already use the DQ8 system? That would break their engine reuse trend).

He isn't working on anything as far as anyone knows. He only appeared in that video to praise the Wii, he made no mention of working on anything for it.

And if you ask me, I think he was just paid to show up.

DQ5 used a Torneko game's engine and came out about 8 months before 8 did. No DQ remake has yet used 8's engine, that's why 6 is ripe for it! 5 kinda broke the trend already by using a non-DQ game's engine. 6 using 8's is what I am hoping the announcement to be, as that is what it should be.

I can show you a quick vid of what 5 looks like in motion if you haven't seen it..it's certainly not using 8's engine there.

He's working on something. It has been reported by 1up and I think ChrisK from Wired

That would be a bit of wasted potential..but certainly not sales-wise. It would be a little awkward, but disgruntlements would probably go away quickly.

One thing against the Wii for DQIX is that the series has been fairly consistent in its controls. It's the same formula perfected.

Granted you can play any DQ game with the wiimote held horizontally as a regular controller.
So who knows.

If we are talking about remakes, DQ6 should be next in the line.

So, DQ6 on PS2 won't be too surprising I think.

I think it's definitely too soon too announce DQ9 for any platform.

Overdue from the fans' point of view. Not from Enix's point of view.

It takes a good what, 4-5 years between main releases of DQ. As a die hard fan of the series, I don't want that to change. Simply because I want them to put time into the story, characters, and everything else to continue to make the games in the main series a classic.

But if they're going where the sales are (or however you want to word it), nothing is going to approach DS levels for a while.

Oh, I forgot to edit out your last sentence. I was talking about DQ6r, not 9. 9 can wait. I'm not expecting even news tidbits for that until late next year or mid 2008.

So who knows.

Nintendo's not afraid of ditching Wiimote controls for Smash Bros. I have a feeling if the Wiimote or any variant it can adapt to cannot play DQ, then SE will have no problem implementing the classic controller or the GC controller.
