Featured Anime Storylines & Their Mecha:

Overman King Gainer (2002)
overmanad.jpg

The story of Robots & People who DANCE, DANCE, DANCE....in the opening song. Otherwise about cold ice future and funky robots. Also directed by Gundam creator Tomino featured above screaming as the show bursts from his head.

OP: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=97j86qH91Nk

The Big O (1999)
the-big-o.jpg

Batman meets Giant Robo with a robot maid. How can you say no!?

OP: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cdae0z2S06c

The Big O Season 2 (2003)
5142NDWMWDL_SS500_.jpg

Where the story goes craaaaaazy. Complete with MORE AWESOME GIANT ROBOTS

OP: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AnaQZgZaOkg

Muteki Chojin Zambot 3 (1977)
ZAMBOT.jpg

I have seen this show but I know he fries people with beams coming out of that helmet, so it's gotta be good. Also of Tomino fame.

OP: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sqhksx_y9bU

Muteki Chojin Daitarn 3 (1978)
daitarn3-1.jpg

d3_desktop_19.jpg

Part of a similar themed Mecha show run as Zambot 3, Daitarn 3 is about a James Bond-esque billionare space pimp who fights off sexy robots trying to mechanize the world. He also shoots the sun out of his helmet for SUN ATTACKO. Also created by Tomino.

OP: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Nz_nFZaJ6E

Sentou Mecha Xabungle (1982)
4758010404.jpg

ALSO by Tomino (yeah he did pretty much every mecha show back in the day, lol), this show features smaller mechs with LOTS OF FIREPOWER and the dude wears a goggle-y hat.

OP: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-bndgraJkfU

Mobile Suit Z Gundam - A New Translation (Original 1985; Movie 2005)
top_img.jpg

Tomino Gundam at it's finest. Great show, but shitty edited abridged and altered 3-set movie version exists as well. SRW Z is the first SRW to use the movie-cut plotline, so DON'T EXPECT PSYCO GUNDAM IN THE SNOW or PSYCO-MKII :( Oh well, at least the majority of the rest should be the same and all new high-res sprites :D

Movie 3 trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wUWJcKykyNo

Mobile Suit Gundam Char's Counterattack (1988)
vlcsnap-75823432.jpg

Yeah, been in pretty much every single game ever by this point (now Gundam Musou 2 in December!). Theatrical film where grown up Amuro and his Nu Gundam vs. Char in his Sazabi. At least they should look hot in new sprites.

Trailers: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kDFc1Tupkis

After War Gundam X (1996)
GundamX8.jpg

Post-apocalyptic story about AWESOME mecha, solid characters, and a plot that was kinda iffy and got canned. Oh well, the MECHA are rad and there are plenty of them, so this should be AWESOME in Z. Oh and it has GREAT OP & ED songs.

OP1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RZjtaRpewB0
OP2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZI5hU2N4KiU
ED1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xy8PupWFS9E
ED2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0b6_2I6M2pI

Turn A Gundam (1999)
turngundam.jpg

Yesssssss!! Tomino's most recent Gundam series that defies all expectations. Mustache'd mecha by American artist Syd Mead, a black lead, 1800s civil war-era farmers vs. GIANT MECHA. Comedy, romance, and a super fucking awesome ending DON'T WATCH UNLESS YOU'VE SEEN THE SHOW BEFORE (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pNC3VWuzhas&feature=related).

OP: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H67tp0FIWk4
ED: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zCg0JyuJQug

Mobile Suit Gundam SEED DESTINY (2004)
seed_destiny01.jpg

lololololol. The worst show in Gundam history. The anime kind of never had an actual plot. Maybe they'll write one for it here! (too bad the mecha suck too :\ ). Oh and the show never figured out who was the lead character between Shinn & Kira, so it's possible Z might fix that and just let you choose one and the other because their antagonist (fingers crossed!)

OP3: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u-p8SJIUNYQ&feature=related

Mazinger Z (1972)
mazingerz02.jpg

Now that the Gundams are out of the way, we get some SUPER ROBO action. Old school-Mazinger vs. giant mecha monsters with beams shooting out of his chest and stuff. Yay.

OP: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vjavoHXqNd4

Great Mazinger (1974)
GreatMazinger.jpg

Mazinger but more badass. Bigger, stronger, more grisly pilot, and shoots lightning out of his finger like Zeus.

OP: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FfGmTzabFM8

Getter Robo G (1975)
imagegettaG2.jpg

I have to admit my Getter Robo history is not my strong point, so I just know this is an alternate take to the normal Getter Robo that shows up on most SRW. Still, Getter is always good, especially in new sprites :D

OP: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L7-7ffgPAko

UFO Robo Grendizer (1975)
grendizer.jpg

I've never seen this, but I hear it's @$%# awesome and that Grendizer is a crazy powerful mecha and so they don't like putting it in the same games as Shin Getter Robo because the universe might implode if they had to decide who is stronger.

OP: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tW8JKCouIA4

Space Emperor God Sigma (1981)
god_sigma_ita.jpg

It's like Voltron but BIG AS SPACE ITSELF. Pretty cool face too. Likes slicing up dudes with giant sword.

OP & ED: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uN3mBTMtW9g

Sousei Aquarion (2005)
aq_a800.jpg

Hilarious Super Robot parody show in a similar vein as to Nadesico but even more silly. Some cool robots should make for awesome attacks and hopefully the game adequately represents the main point of the anime: That gattai-ing is the key to a good orgasm.

OP: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J7MmhjmD41w&feature=related

Reverberation of the Psalm Eureka Seven (2005)
psalms-of-planets-eureka-se.jpg

One of the best anime ever made gets it's first SRW entry. A deceptively simple love story with surfing mecha becomes one of the most epic and awesome adventures to grace the format. Excellent characters, mecha design, story, and music should make the Eureka 7 subplot of Z amazing.

OP1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MoXk4e9E6tU
OP2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-yIyZQpSvvE
OP3: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7j-7ZwABaww
OP4: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=noXqhvEI800
ED1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J1waDaI61iE
ED2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pVb4wFhFw3M

ED4: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6lHm2_yySJ0 (<3)

Super Dimension Century Orguss (1983)
mainpage.jpg

I don't know anything about this show, but it's pretty famous in the old-school crowd and the mecha are tiny plane-like sorta like Macross. Good times!

OP & ED: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9-O5bAsGa-M

Space Warrior Baldios (1981)
baldios.jpg

A dude and his mecha vs. bad guy army.

OP & ED: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f63j5Fi9NNc

Super Heavy God Gravion (2002)
gravion.jpg

This was a shitty Gonzo show with lots of Boobs, lolis, and robots of the day. BUT the mecha design is pretty good, so with all the fat cut out it should work nicely in Z.

OP: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7s52-wnjo64

Super Heavy God Gravion (2004)
gravion2.jpg

This was the sequel to the previous shitty Gonzo show with even more Boobs, lolis, and mecha. Again, it should fit in well here as an overpowered playable unit.

OP: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LRuATsrxxNQ

And that concludes the lineup of characters & plotlines that will make up the majority of the EPIC 100 HOUR ULTIMATE MECHA S-RPG that is known as SUPER ROBOT WARS Z.

If you like robots; if you have an import-capable PS2; if you like HOT-BLOODED SCREAMING ACTION; then you have no choice but to join members of this thread in playing the ULTIMATE GAME over the next month or so.

GIANT ROBOTS! RAWR! GOGOGOGOGGO!

The new redrawn portraits for all the series are AWESOME and the sprites are sick.

I just got to Stage 7 on the RR route! I'm digging the RR robots and team. Very OG-esque and the mecha themselves work really well together, especially as a squad so far.

Oh and It's Grendizer and Mazinkaiser that they don't want to put into the same game for fear of imploding the universe. :lol

Oh, I should point out that the Real Robot Originals in this look FAR better in game than they do in the art.

Big O is in the game? Damn I hate North American licensing issues.

Also why wont Atlus bring the damn PS2 Super Robot Wars OG series games to North America? No one asked for Posion Pink >_<

Maybe next game with Gurren Lagann. They could probably work the two into each other.

now where the fuck is my game, fucking should have arrived today

edit: While the Nu Gundam will make an appearance, the Sazabi however will not be. it's probably reserved for later sequels

I've had this preordered with NCSX for months now, I should get my copy early next week.

CANNOT WAIT FOR THE AWESOMENESS AND GATTAI-ING!!

Konami owns game rights for Gurren Lagann, so it won't appear in SRW anytime soon.

Banpresto worked out some arrangement with Sega for the Virtual On mechs in Super Robot Wars Alpha 3, so there's a chance.

Can't believe Bebpo has never watched Ufo Robot Grendizer... it's Go Nagai at its finest ffs!
C'mon man you wont regret it!
Well, admitelly I grew up with the shit so I may be feeling a little emotionally attached to it :'-)

Also: the originals are sooooo shitty, why can't we have something as awesome as OG was?
And: Has any group stepped up for a menu/selectables translation patch already?

Still waiting to place my order based on that honestly, then I can use gamefaqs for the story translation but I need to be at least "gameplay fluent"

I often wonder if we will ever see a SRW game with BOTH "Grendizer" Super's in it. There's this one here from the series...but then there's the other one that only existed in that UFO movie from, I think, much earlier that was a total alternate with different moves, story, the works. Somebody back me up on this and instill hope!

i got the game last night, played it for bout 4 hours, RR route, at stage 8. Still trying to get used to the new interface and Tri-group mechanics. As far as i'm concern, tri weapons are pretty much the same as each member of your squad engaging a target in the enemy squad, does more damage though, squat member's accuracy is taken into consideration as well.

PP has inflated greatly, now instead of 80 points to get a PP skill, it cost you 800 points, other skills vary in cost.
A new PP skill was introduced "Attack Again", if your pilot has this skill, he'll literally do support attack by himself, if his skill stat is 20 or more than his target. It's kinda like a mini 2 movement but not broken, extremely expensive.

A new seishin/spirit command, "Analyze", which when used on an enemy, will reduce their defense and dodge by 10%. Theres another seishin, which is a upgraded "accelerate" that grants you +4 movement.

The sprites are HD capable, it'll display in HD if you use the PS3 to play it, no widescreen support though, very sharp sprites. The downside is probably the animation, there are ups and downs, the gundams and grunts have shitty animation (especially gundam Z). The SRs on the other hand has excellent animation, from the classic grendizer to the modern Big-O, they are slow but the animation is very fluid and they try to preserve the classic feel to the old shows.

So far, i'm not liking the RR female route, she's very similar to Ibis douglas, gloomy and unconfident at the beginning, it'll probably be very good at the end. Her mech has horrible animation, i hope it gets better for her upgrade.

sound/music, they still use midi quality music, oh well, been like that for like what?forever

These are first impressions, i'll have to play enough to unlock more stuff (the bazaar is not even up yet)

As for the basic command menu, has always been the same. Even if you don't know which is what, you can immediately understand it once you mess around with it

This game looks beautiful on my PS3. Holy god.

Also, Gunleon is aaaaawesome. His voiced theme is fucking hilariously badass.

See, this is why you choose SR. Generic boring looking military girl is exactly as she looks.

Setsuko meshes well with the characters on specific routes, mostly the real robots and the gang there. I`m on stage 20 with her so I`ve seen more of the story with her and I like her so far. Her robot needs a little more ummph at times but it`s pretty damn amazing for a Real Robot in this game. It`s gonna be a killer when it comes to the OGs I think.

Most of the Gundam grunts have shitty animation but the major Gundam units aren`t too shabby, from the Z movies I mean. The Hyaku-shiki and Mk-II look good and of course so do the big Gundams from Seed Destiny and Gundam X. X-Divider is HAWT looking. The Classic Super Robots all look fantastic as does the current Super Robots. Baldios is sexy and Gravion looks great too.

i wish i could play this for the sole fact that it has Grendizer in it. I was born in morocco, so i used to watch it religiously when i was a kid. It is a very good mecha show, or maybe it's just the nostalgia talking.

I don't think there is a single chance this might get localized. So a big thank you in advance to all the guys that will get this and write some detailed impressions.

Play-Asia shipped my copy. Should have it Friday morning, yay :)

Using tonight to finally finishing Aquarion before Z and then probably will marathon Gainer tomorrow :D

Also, I have no clue why some of you are playing the RR route and then complain about dull leads. WHY WOULD YOU PICK the generic female military pilot over the charismatic fun grown-up with a super robot and a giant wrench? I mean really...

Also, much like Scramble Commander 2, this game is making Seed Destiny bearable for the most part. I still want to punch Kira and Athrun though. Shinn isn`t too bad though!

[you had your chance, turn back now, don't high light this]

[ok, i give up]
apparently you face off the opposing original character in the game, yes you face Rand and his Z-team or Setsuko and her Z-time depending on which character you start with.

btw shouta do you post on the gamefaqs srwz boards? i notice the same name there.

Glad to hear this game seems to be turning out awesome. Unfortunately although I'm a big fan of SRW I'm not a Japanese speaker so I'll have to wait for someone to make a translation FAQ before I can get it. Anybody know if one is being worked on?

Just hit Mission 8. From what I hear, it seems Rand gets the lion's share of good characters.

King Gainer, Eureka 7, Gundam X, Turn A, and a mech with a GIANT FUCKING WRENCH.

Meanwhile, poor Budokai is stuck with a bunch of fucking Seed Destiny units. Poor guy.

Gainer is kind of meh so far. The GX units are badass though but the Turn A not so much. =(

RR route gets the larger share of awesome super robots early on it seems. Grendizer > your face

[minor spoilers]

just looked at Setsuko's upgraded mech and final attack, wow that's really lack luster, looks like she got the crappy end of the stick. I'm seriously hopping that's not her final stuff; on the other hand Rand has good improvements, not gonna spoil it but it's awesome than setsuko's

Seriously, keep spoilers spoil text'd in threads please (and preferably map # next them since the game is so huge)

SRW is a game that kind is not fun to get upgrades or plot points spoiled.

It's....not. You could muck around and figure out how to generally play it, but it's chockful of kanji.

Actually there's not much mucking about needed, those clever chaps at akurasu.net have already translated most of the stuff (like menu items and such) that you actually need to know in order to play. But you will miss out on the story and you won't have a clear idea of what your objectives are in each level.

Well, aren't SEED/SEED-D units usually stupidly overpowered anyway? So I guess that would make up for them being from a sucktacular series.

I never understood how these games have so much of a fanbase despite being absolutely non import friendly. Do you all just speak japanese or what?

The power of giant robots outweighs language barriers, apparently.

I can read hiragana and katakana, but my kanji knowledge is pathetic, yet I soldier through these games based on my knowledge of the shows and my love for GIANT ROBOTS.

I have to admit my Getter Robo history is not my strong point, so I just know this is an alternate take to the normal Getter Robo that shows up on most SRW. Still, Getter is always good, especially in new sprites

I remember this cartoon when I was a kid. In the west it was called 'Star Vengers' and those three robots (Star Dragon, Star Poseidon, & Star ???) would combine into a different robot depending on what robot was on top. I used to love it.

Getter Robo G is a direct sequel to Getter Robo. In fact, the first episode starts with the original Getter Robo in flames and the characters mourning Musashi's death (which, actually, doesn't fit very well with the ending of Getter Robo, but wathever).

Nope. I got introduced to SRW via the SRW Alpha series, there are translation FAQs for most parts of those (and also there are groups working on actual translation patches for SRW Alpha and SRW Alpha Gaiden). As far as being able to actually play the game without knowing any Japanese, the secret is pattern recognition. You start out referring to your menus/commands/spells FAQ which has the Japanese characters next to an English description, and gradually you learn that the characters that look like this mean the command that does that, and so on.

Note: if you are playing on a PS2, I cannot stress enough the need to use a component (for NTSC consoles and TVs) or RGB SCART (for PAL consoles and TVs) cable. Any lesser type of connection will lead to blurred text which is difficult to recognise using this method.

Got mine and played through mission 10 on SR route so far. Random thoughts:

-skill points (SR points) are the hardest yet in any SRW I've played (@2,OGs,OG-G). In the other games hard maps might take a bunch of quick resets to get the points but here not only am I doing quick resets but sometimes I JUST CAN'T GET THEM >_< Map 8 on SR (
Aquarion intro map in 3 turns
) seems absolutely impossible. I spent almost 2 hours redoing the map over and over until I just gave up. I hate that I have 9/10 SR points as I like perfect skill point runs, but I'll need to see a youtube video of someone getting that Map 8 SR point before I will believe it's humanly possible.

-That frustration aside, the new squad system seems pretty cool and efficient. In squad-based SRW I remember how long maps would take because unless your unit had an ALL attack you'd have to pick off the units in the squad one by one. Now with the TRI system, you can do really good TRI attacks that often kill all 3 units in the squad at the same time. Or you can just do wide and have everyone attack everyone. Either way it seems like they've given you options to kill things faster and I approve.

-Speaking of speed, FINALLY enemies blow up on the final hit of any attack that kills them. No more ripping them into 40 pieces only to see them magically back together as they give their generic explosion.

-Maps are really big and you usually start at least 1 turn away from the enemies. This is kinda ehhhhh, and makes turn-based SR points harder. But I assume when you get HUGE parties it'll be good to have all this map space. I can still only deploy 5 squads right now :\

-Graphics are great. While some units who don't move during their standing animation look a bit weird like flash cut-outs, when moving I think all units look pretty good. I haven't been blown away by the animation yet, but I'm pleased by it all. Map sprites are not improved at all since @2 days, lol.

-I am impressed by the 3-dimensionality of the backgrounds that the team talked about. Dashing through clouds in the sky to fly down into a city and slice someone and then fly away is awesome. The backgrounds are almost more impressive than the sprites :p

-Music is good. I was really happy to hear Tsuki no Mayu [final ep version] from Turn A in midi form. All the mixes of shows I know sound good. There aren't many voiced lines so far though which is a little disappointing. The only one has been Aquarion's gattai. I kinda expected some Turn A ones but alas.

-I don't like the GUI much tbh. It takes too many menus presses to switch leaders in a squad, there is no way to see everyone's "ki" like in OGs and I find equipping items and squad management more cumbersome. Oh well...

-The story so far is pretty good on the SR side. The lead is charismatic, the way they work all the series together has been done well, and the main plot idea of a parallel universe universe is cool and gives a lot of potential for both this game's plot and for future Z2/Z3/etc....

-The bazaar so far is dunno. I haven't bought anything yet as I don't have many points and don't want to waste them. The items for sale are just common accesories, nothing really great and no units are up for sale yet.

-The new PP skills will be interesting. I finally have my first units with attackx2 and it feels almost game-breaking as 2 attacks per turn is A LOT of damage on normal enemies. I am very worried about when enemies start having attackx2 though.

That's about all I can think of for now. Will add more as I play more.

-Aquarion's infinity punch starts it's weapon stats at
4200 damage, 14 range
. Holy shit! This will be a monster unit.

I never understood how these games have so much of a fanbase despite being absolutely non import friendly. Do you all just speak japanese or what?

A lot of people in this thread are at least ok at Japanese and can follow what's going on, but even if you can't read any Japanese, you can still enjoy the games very much for the s-rpg gameplay & the animations. Plus if you've seen the shows you can kinda figure out what's going on even without reading the text.

-I don't like the GUI much tbh. It takes too many menus presses to switch leaders in a squad, there is no way to see everyone's "ki" like in OGs and I find equipping items and squad management more cumbersome. Oh well...

Hit Square (I thnk) or so while hovering over them to quick switch squad leaders. Triangle should be Transformation.
