The Bonus Round panel talk about Xbox One’s slow start and if the company can stay alive in the next generation of gaming.

thought garnett made a good point towards the end about indies and kinect, makes too much sense for it to happen though

Saw this earlier; Over-dramatic title/description but decent points in the video. I think me and Mike are on the same page in terms of what they could do to keep kinect (introduce a new SKU that has larger storage + kinect for $500 and introduce a $400 SKU that's the current 500 GB size). Game streaming and indies were brought up for kinect too which were things discussed in the kinect thread here.

Microsoft needs to open the retail console up as a Debug unit sooner, rather then later. Indie devs registered with ID@XBOX using Unity will probably be able to do some really cool things with Kinect. Hopefully this is something they address at GDC this month, with a huge focus being on Indies for them.

I wanted to dominate the living room. Then I took an ESRAM in the knee.
I wonder why they skipped so fast over Keighley's mention of the performance difference. I really think that people are underestimating how informed consumers nowadays are. A simple Google search reveals that the PS4 is running games "better". You don't have to understand what "better" means in detail, but you'll pick it up and it will inform your decision. Since new consoles are almost always and almost exclusively about better hardware, this point is constantly being underrated.

I always find the Pachter hate a bit baffling...generally I think he has pretty reasoned arguments.

Similar to Wii U in my opinion, albeit on a much different scale...the Xbox One is $100 more with a peripheral with seemingly no real legitimate function for most consumers when comparing against the PS4....factor in the cheaper price and stronger multi-platform titles, it's not confusing WHY MS is in position they are in...what is a bit surprising to me, though is how consumers have responded the way they have-which I'm pleased with. MS need to offer MUCH better value for their system if they're going to maintain price point and worse specs.

It's never been a proven driving force in hardware sales.

People often cite that piece of trivia, the most powerful system has never won, and it's true, obviously it's going to win this time, but I'd doubt it's because of performance.

Keighley on Titanfall: "It's not a Window exclusive or, you know, IT'S ONLY COMING TO XBOX ONE!"

Too bad Pachter corrected him that it's also coming to 360.

He said "windowed". A yes he was trying to sell it as Xbox One exclusive. Money goes along way.

I have serious doubts about indie developers being excited to work with Kinect.

Somehow they also forgot that Titanfall is also coming to the PC.

Neogaf got hammered by some in the media for the consensus view that the PS4 would come roaring out of the gate and that the Xbox One would trail behind. We were called fanboys. Now it seems we were just ahead of the curve.

MS did everything wrong for to make their launch a shit show; from price to policies. Their saving grace, at least right now, is that they correct mistakes and weaknesses fast (even if they shouldn't have been there in the first place).

The FW updates seem to be very frequent and bring actual functionality. They started out way behind PS4's functionality and are almost caught up now. If they can keep up with increasing functionality, which at this rate seems unlikely, they could be in a very strong place in a year. Unfortunately HW mistakes that were already made that can't be corrected (Useless HDMI pass-through, weaker raw specs).

Kinect is the obvious millstone dragging this console into the abyss. And even removing it from the SKU won't cut the manufacturing by much because all of the Kinect processing is on the main SoC.
The Second boon of XB1 is Gold, which has yet to materialize any perceived value on the platform. Games with Gold needs to move up STAT and apps shouldn't be behind the paywall.

Gaming needs Xbox One to do good for Sony to not get cocky again next gen

What..? You do realize that the PS3 was the cheapest blu ray player on the market when it launched? It also had backwards compatibility and free online. Not everyone was ready to drop 600 bucks when they just wanted to play games, but the value was clearly there. It's not like the Xbox One and Kinect.
EDIT: Here's a great post about the subject.
What I got from Sony domination was a console capable of playing all PS1, PS2, and PS3 games. A $600 blu-ray player when blu-ray players were $1000. The only console with HDMI output. The only console capable of lossless sound and DTS sound in games. The only HD console with wifi capability. They provided 3x the HDD space of their main competitor. They provided the capability to upgrade the HDD to whatever size you wanted within the physical dimension limitations.

What I got cost Sony $850 BOM to build and they only charged $600 for it.

Yes, their PR was arrogant and they glossed over omissions like rumble by claiming it was a "last gen feature" and told people to get a second job to afford the system. (If I built something for $850 and tried to sell it for $600 and everyone told me it was still too expensive, I'd probably get upset too)

But the console itself outside of the blunder that was Cell, was a beast of value. And I didn't even buy the PS3 to game. I bought it ONLY for blu-ray and it was an incredible value. 360 was my gaming console of choice last gen.

I took it from this exciting thing about the Titanfall universe thread that keighly had something to do with that, presenting or something.

There is that old paycheck talking, too many conflicts of interest in this industry.

Come to think of it, it seems like we are due an update on the PS4.

Well it's common consumer sense. Somehow the people in the media lost that.

Sony is pushing inFamous

I see ads... and the trailer are getting good views
I think Infamous will sell a lot thanks to so many people having a ps4 but I don't think it will move that many consoles. Not that Sony really needs it to. They are going to be riding that launch hype for a while.

In regards to the topic, I definitely think Microsoft needs to find a way to drop the price without dropping Kinect first. I think it's possible for them to turn it around. And honestly, I think they eventually will. But I also think they are going to end up in 2nd place this time around.

Console has been out for less than half a year. Time to start ringing the alarm bells?

All three consoles have sales in the range of 5 million. Sure, the Wii U had a year head-start and completely squandered it, but right now, there's pretty much parity between the three.

E3 2014 should help sort things out.

Many resent GAF as we are the alternative to the sites they work for.

News breaks here first, insider information, community etc ............. fuck IGN, Polygon etc, suck my GAF! ;)

And I like having good choices.

So it's not about the games, it's about the demeanor of executives?

Odd way to choose a console.

I never stated that is was ONLY that just that it was also a part of my choice. I barely purchased anything for my PS2 back in the day due to "cockiness". I have a tendency to support the underdogs.

Xbone is around the 3 million range and the PS4 is at 6 million. Who knows what the Wii-U is at since it's shipped numbers, but it's definitely under the PS4.

We sure are. I can't believe how glacial the progress has been. Is youtube uploading/app, DLNA and fucking MP3 support really that hard to implement in 2014.

I predict a big update April / May with many of the features missing but not all.

I'm not sure about that. Consoles have always been marketed with their performance. The main difference is that it was easier in the past to bullshit consumers with "blast processing", "64 bit" and "4D graphics". It's that easy anymore nowadays, since the Internet as quite good in exposing bullshit as it is in producing it.
