Games you didn't play because of their art style

Anything going for photorealism. So, basically, most Western developed modern games. Give me cartoony, give me comic book style, give me anime, give me something tough to categorize! But give me something that looks like it could exist outside my window and you lose my interest.

This is EXACT the same for me. I don't see any appeal in photorealism and I see it boring most of time unless it's something like InFamous: SS or Destiny which have good color use + realism. I think games doesn't need to emulate reality at all. In the other hand I LOVE anime + semi-realism such as KOF or actual Final Fantasy style.

What's that one with the rabbit? I think he's a ninja? It's an indie game? The studio is something about a wolf or something?

Luguru. My god is that game ugly. Worse than an N64 game run through an emulator. I really hope the devs aren't members here because I'm sorry.

Tried playing Stick it to the Man which I downloaded with PS+ and I couldn't handle the artstyle. Deleted it about 15 minutes in.

Also, did about the same thing with Don't Starve. It was a mixture of art and sound in that one though.

Surprised at all the anime responses. Used to be a majority of good console games had an anime look to them, because Japan was still delivering the most compelling stuff.

All Bioware games.

I know some people don't get into JRPGs because of the anime... but many American RPG character designs are absolutely grotesque looking, even (perhaps especially) the ones that are supposed to look attractive.

Especially those customizable generic design with dead eyes along with bad animation. Skyrim too.

Was thinking "Dust" as I was waiting for the thread to open.

I would normally be all over that type of game but all the deviantart furry stuff meant I didn't even download it when it was free recently.

All the stuff by McMillen, Meat Boy, Isaac, it's deliberately "unappealing" and "edgy" I guess but to me it just looks like garbage. Not necessarily the style but how it clearly looks like FLash / vector art.

Lotta jp povertyish fighting games...I'm sure some have cool mechanics but arcana heart etc kinda weird me out. Love gg, melty and so on so it's only like a very specific subset games that are unbearably anime.

I can't tolerate Blizzard shitty fantasy armor designs and color palette. Friends tried to get me hook long ago, but I can't help but think the game color hues being disgusting. I guess I must be weird one cause tons of people play WoW and find their designs appealing.

Why is Dust always the first game mentioned in these kinds of threads?

It was pretty jarring in that sense, even if you like anthro art and such. Not that it scared me off personally though. But then again, I can even play Oblivion and just take it for what it is, even though that probably has the ugliest character designs of any game I ever played.

Really? I thought it was absolutely amazing. One of the most visually impressive games I've ever played.

For me, it's probably the Atelier games. They sound interesting but I just can't get over the pedoriffic aspect to these games. No, I don't want to see a 12 year old girl's asscrack.

What pedophilic aspect are you talking about? There is none.
What the...? Is there any attempt at an explanation for this in the game?
It's a DLC costume.

I tried a demo for Darksiders, don't know if that counts.

Absolutely disgusting Todd McFarlene-knockoff gothic overdone mess of an art-style. I find the artwork above hideous, and since this was more of a mid-tier last gen game, it wasn't going to fully live up to the artwork either. The demo wasn't fun to me and I've never had any desire to seek this out, even after hearing praise for it. The art style wasn't the sole reason, but I believe it played a considerable part.

Like all Japanese games where the characters are all "pretty" underaged girls and boys. Examples would be those Atelier games and Eternal Sonata. The only game made by a western studio that had art that killed my interest in the game was Injustice: Gods Among Us. I mean jesus christ Netherrealm, way to ruin some of the most iconic comic heroes ever. Everyone was just so ugly and poorly designed.

edit: Almost forgot about Skullgirls. Some of the poorest character designs ever. Very amateurish.

Precisely, I recently decided against buying Dust because of the art style. This is not something I usually do, but I guess I didn't want to play it that much in the first place.

I have to disagree with you. The art style is great in this game I thought and even better in the second. not to mention if you can get over the rip off elements, its dammed amazing.

I just can't STAND those awful Japanese games with their terrible kiddy art that insults the real values of games as a medium for grown up, manly, kickass men like me.

You're presenting a false dichotomy. I can love highly stylized games with unique art direction and still find depictions of sexualized young girls disgusting.

Even though I completed the game the most off putting to me was Bayonetta. Sure there is trashier stuff out but this one hurts because the gameplay is so good but the art style and characters are horrendous.
