Mario Kart 8 Patch Request Thread

Does Nintendo even patch there games? There's seriously so much they could add. A proper options menu, stat tracking, horizontal split screen, displaying the times during online races when you finish, less coins from item boxes, ability to use the game pad as a separate screen when playing local multiplayer

More content! New characters (Diddy and Bowser Jr?), proper battle courses, new tracks, and a mission/challenge mode. These would come in an expansion pack though, not a patch.

The main things that I would like to see in a patch would be:
  • Fixing the comm error when someone quits without voting on next race
  • fix the occasional glitch where someone falls through the map
  • Add in actual battle mode maps (I'm confident they'll do this either through patch or DLC)
  • possibility to toggle a minimap on or off during splitscreen races so that it isn't limited only to the gamepad player

  • Toggleable mini map for main screen (on the TV)
  • Toggleable Friendly Fire for the Team mode
  • Increase the speed for the Star item
  • Remove Coin item

- Switch Highlight Reel and Next Race selections.

- Add ability to choose amount of races and laps (From 1 to whatever) in VS. Mode. I want Rainbow Road N64 to be it's true length (or just 2 full laps even!). Disable the laps option for Mount Wario for obvious reasons.

- Add a real battle mode with actual maps and modes.

- Allow saving kart configurations.

- Fix the online disconnects.

- Fix Item distribution (I DON'T WANT ANYMORE COINS GIMME A DAMN SHELL)

- Balance the item RNG

- Fix the bug that results in a comm error when someone quits before voting

- Make it so one player can play from the gamepad and other player(s) play from the TV (Local and online)

- Allow players to reassign controllers without restarting the system or going back to the Wii U main menu

- Allow players to favorite replays in MKTV mode and not just after a race

- Increase the number of videos players can favorite

- Let players view Time Trial stats and ghost data with fewer steps

Forgot about this, but it's essential. Item distribution is horrible in this game, 90% of the time you're getting single green shells, single mushrooms or triple mushrooms no matter where you're placed. The reduced frequency of lightning and blue shells is welcome, but the game is far too heavily weighted in favour of those three. Coins should also only be for the player in first.

As for Toad's Turnpike, the reason it doesn't work is because the track's too wide and the traffic goes in both directions. Makes the track far too easy, I played the N64 version with friends fairly recently and it's great fun, everyone getting blown to high hell around every corner and the person in front having to negotiate the tiny margin for error when two vehicles are driving alongside each other.

I would like:
- Fix firehopping;
- Show stats (or at the very least the number of Coins);
- Better Netcode;
- Ability to change karts in the online lobby;

OP, I agree with most of what you said, except for the "in-game voice chat" (I can get way too rude and vulgar when I play that game)

no way, heavy weight characters rule

You don't want voice chat even if it's just with friends only? Wouldn't you be swearing out your buddy sitting next to you on the sofa anyway? Lol.

Coins need to stop dropping when you get ten of them. It's no fun sitting around with the same banana the entire race because you can't risk being defenseless when the guy behind you gets a red shell. You also need to be able to set replay options in the main menu.

And the new Rainbow Road is awesome. Y'all just suck.

- option to invite friends to a lobby (+ notification when they sign in)
- "next race" default option in single player mode / GP
- time trial: at the very least it should be possible to filter results (friends only, own country, etc.), and if I'm not mistaken there was a built-in option in MK Wii to challenge friends that is nowhere to be seen here
- too many karts with identical stats, feels like a "cheap" way to add content :-\
- 59/60 fps glitch (I usually don't notice it *that* much but still...)

It's definitely the hardest course but the main reason im not a fan is that if you are using a character that is heavy, it is basically a roll of the dice that you are going to stay on the road on the first set of turns. I don't like that I have to have a very specific spec to be effective on that map. Especially when you can't change karts in the online lobby. The new rainbow road is only one my kart type is a problem.

Speaking of which, add the abilty to at least change karts in the lobby.

I'm sorry but even if you are the heaviest class it's never a roll of the dice. It's always about positioning yourself on the side of the track that best suits your character and vehicle at the time, as well as learning when to start your drift. In terms of heavy characters, if you want to make a right turn, then move over to the left side of the track and start drifting very far in advance.

There isn't a track in the game that can't be beat with all characters and vehicle customization using pure driving skills. Yes the new rainbow road is difficult, but if you tend to play heavy characters a lot and keep falling off the sides, that's your own fault and need more practice.

One more piece of advice. The brake button is usually a big no no in all mario kart games. But what I find people usually don't understand is that if your a skilled enough driver to begin with, then you should use some light braking on tracks like rainbow road with heavy class dudes. Your top speed easily makes up for the speed lost on the light taps of the brake and if you fully understand drifiting / cornering then you shouldn't have any problem.

haha you're right, if it's friends only (like voice chat in lobby) then it's okay, but I don't know everyone on my Friend List IRL

Also, get rid of the blue shell on the final lap.It should be totally deactivated. It only helps the people in second and third place but only the worst players in last seem to get it.

This is genius. No blue shells on final lap. Do it now Nintendo.

Thread is full of great suggestions. View highlights menu position gets me way too often.

Something I miss a lot from MKWii is that all vehicles changed colors depending on the character. I'm far too shallow to use a combination that is a total eyesore, lol.

It'd be great if it was possible to restart an individual race in the Grand Prix instead of having to start all over from the beginning.
=> When you aim at getting 3 stars and don't rank 1st, you'd be free to start again the race you missed on and wouldn't have to leave to the main menu.

All I really want is the 59/60 timing glitch fixed and a lap selection option for offline multiplayer. Granted, I haven't played too much online yet, but I'm mostly satisfied with it, and have yet to run into the Coin item RNG issue when leading. Though making Rainbow Road 64 longer would be nice.

I think it's done that way on purpose to force you to grind more. :/

Yeah, add true battle mode maps. I want voice chat among friends in online private matches.
Also I'd like them to add a feature where you can press a button in the online lobby and see the stats of the match you just played in case you missed it for whatever reason.

I'm just going for what I feel are realistic choices rather than everything I want.

  • 150cc mde in worldwide races - I believe it's 100cc currently? Or atleast an option for it.

I've been on a 150cc online race. I'm sure cc selection works the same way as in previous Mario Karts; if everybody in the room has beat the 150cc Grand Prix's then the race will be in 150cc and sometimes in Mirror Mode.

Also, patch fire hopping and make it so that your character/vehicle/glider is saved the next time you start MK8 (loadout?)

MK TV should be updated to allow us to choose our own highlights and camera angles. There have been times that I've had good moments I wanted to upload but the angle was wrong or the clip fades out just before the highlight happens (like my last minute Super Horn destroying the Blue Shell).

Does Nintendo even patch there games?

They patched NSMBU to add Pro Controller support and have patched Pikmin 3 to add Stylus controls.

Yeah, the abbility to choose from the 32 tracks during Online multiplayer would be nice. I guess they didn't add that option so that you can get to play online quickly just by choosing from 4 pre-selected courses.

Delete the new rainbow road.

What!? Nope. It's a well designed, fast paced Rainbow Road and I like that rather than loooong and boring RR courses from past games.

Add in an options menu where you can check your stamps, as well as change button configuration (I have no issue here but some likely do).

Mini map for those that want it.

Change kart setup during online session.

Not gonna happen but I would love the addition of Gamepad split screen with at least two people.

Also, the option to change how the screen is splitted in multi.

• Options menu w/items listed in OP
• Stats
I've collected how many coins?
• Mini map on television
• Proper battle courses

Gamepad mode and TV Mode.

Basically, TV mode should adjust the HUD to include all of the valuable information that is locked away on the gamepad. Current race rankings, who is holding what item, the map.

And if you hate yourself and what to commit race suicide you can still choose Gamepad mode for some reason.

Bring back the option to race 7 ghosts at once in Time Trials, plzzzz. Trials are way less fun with only one ghost.

You've all made some good suggestions I absolutely agree with. Namely a proper options menu where control configs can be set, the option of doing local multiplayer with one player having full screen on your TV, and the other player having their screen on the GamePad (It's just such a no-brainer, how did this not happen?)

It has been covered, but my biggest disappointment with Mario Kart 8 is the item distribution. I have had a lot of fun playing the game, but the amount of frustration I've had because of how items are distributed has been a real problem for me. Last night I was racing online in Royal Raceway and with every item box I picked up, I was given coins. I wasn't holding a position in 1st for the whole race, these are varying positions.

I just can't understand why this would happen. The item distribution seems completely random at times, I've been in 12th, collected a single green shell, meanwhile someone several positions ahead gets a Bullet Bill. I didn't play Mario Kart 7, so I'm not sure if it's similar in 7, but at least in previous Mario Kart games there was some sort of predictability with the items you may receive based on your current position. I can understand for the sake of balance Nintendo tried to do something here, but in practice I don't think it works very well at all. I personally feel it has taken away some of the spirit of Mario Kart. If it's not coins then it's just boosts. Good lord I can't count how many times I've collected boosts in this game. They're useful, sure, but it just makes it so boring to receive the same item over, and over again.

I hope I'm not alone in this camp. Sadly I really doubt this will be patched into the game.

It's tiered from 2+
So 2.5 is actually 2.

Huh. Interesting.

Can someone link me to a guide to MK8 stats (like, what stats are most important generally, which weight class is best, and so forth)? I want to know that stuff, but I always have trouble finding a clear and comprehensive breakdown.

No. Why punish the better player by giving them something that leaves them defenseless?

Allow me to put a minimap on the TV while using the TV OR on the Gamepad when I'm only using the Gamepad.

Because the hell if I'm going to look down at the Gamepad to view the map while playing online multiplayer on the TV, and while othertimes I have to let the wife use the TV when she wants to watch Crunchyroll/Netflix/etc.

Now that I've played MK8 for a while, the core mechanics are very solid and the game is a lot of fun, but man some of these issues are just inexplicable.

How on earth did they think it was a good idea not to allow 2p local multiplayer with one person on the TV and one on the gamepad? The most obvious use of the gamepad in the world, and they just completely ignore it. I mean, what on earth?

I was 2nd and won an online match because I had an 8.

On the flipside, I've been last a lot and never gotten lightning. But the CPU has no trouble at all getting that and a blue shell.

Fix this RNG shit, Nintendo.

Maybe already been mentioned, but:

Stats page.
Online voicechat.
"Custom" item option that let's your toggle exactly which items, and how often they appear.
Save slots for 3, or whatever, "Custom" item settings.
Save slots for 4, or whatever, custom kart settings to quick-load.
If it doesn't already exist an option to change the number of laps.

If they're adding new stages and characters:

Mission Mode.
Baby Park.
Actual Battle Maps.
Baby Park.
Dry Bones.
Baby Park.
Airship Fortress.

Baby Park!

Imagine Baby Park, but it's like a giant hollow ring all around the track. There are no walls, and you have the option of going inside the ring, or staying on the outside. Shells would fly everywhere, never stopping until they hit an item, or a person. It would be beautiful.

  • Alter Triple Red Shell's distribution placement so that only those in 4th place or lower can obtain them, with only two people max being able to receive them. (tired of these being handed out like candy yet being extremely OP)
  • No more flying Red Shells
  • Buff the Starman (it should still give you a speed boost. WHY DOES IT NOT GIVE YOU A SPEED BOOST?)
  • Buff the Blue/Spiny Shell (I honestly don't understand how anyone can still take this item seriously. It has the same effect as any other shell item. Either change its hitstun back to MK7's, or at least allow it to take (non-dragged) items away)
  • Nerf the Banana (seriously, why does it have the longest hitstun in the game?)
  • Buff the Golden Mushroom (pretty sure I'm not the only one who's noticed how nerfed this item is. It shouldn't peter out at any point. It should always give you full boosts)
  • Allow individuals to look in rear-view while they're getting hit or in a Bullet Bill (why was this even changed from Mario Kart Wii?)
  • Lower the frequency of the Coin item in 1st place (it's a pretty cheap way of screwing someone out of 1st when they're given nothing but coins)
  • Patch the invisible item glitch (seems like after a Thundershock strikes, some items will only visibly disappear. So getting hit by a dropped shell or picking up an invisible mushroom isn't unheard of)
  • Patch the Starman dodge glitch (as I've heard multiple times from a friend, when you dodge the Thundershock with the Starman and pick up a new item, it'll vanish after your Starman finishes. Odd)
  • Fix the collision detection (for some unfathomable reason, you're sent off in a random direction if you boost into any physical object. That shouldn't happen.)
  • Standstill drifting should more efficient (like in Mario Kart Wii and 7, if you held down the drift and acceleration button (acceleration and brake/reverse button in 7) you could alter your direction. It was a very efficient way of changing your direction if you hit a wall or were stuck. Seeing how easy it is to get stuck on walls in MK8, it would be nice if they were to bring this feature back to its former glory of actually being usable)
  • PUT THE GODDAMN MINI-MAP ON-SCREEN (there is NO reason why this shouldn't be the case. Especially when there's already a perfect spot on the upper right corner for it. It is completely impossible to look up and down at a GamePad while playing this game without fucking something up)

Those are my main gripes with the game. All the other aesthetic things that I'm bothered with (no 'Thanks For Playing!' screen after the credits or celebration ceremony, and shitty roster) could easily be fixed later and I'd be A-OK with it. ...Not like they ever will though. 'Cept maybe an improved roster...?

In addition to the OP, it would be nice to see the following added:

Lap times.
Horizontal split screen.
Option to use gamepad as a second screen, instead of splitting both the tv and gamepad, in local multiplayer.
No helmets on Miis.

yes, why do they have helmets? No other racers always have helmets on.

Hey lets make the user, who spent a long time designing the look of that character, and throw a helmet on top of all that. From the back, they all look the same.
